News.com.au Autoplay Has Changed

Anyone else noticed that the autoplay on news.com.au has changed? You used to be able to stop it on the countdown from 5, but now it just shows '5' and then starts loading and playing. You can't stop it beforehand.

Any ideas for a workaround that won't affect other sites?

  • Turn off their autoplay - but even then the autoplay still plays but at least without the stupid 5 in the middle.

On the video player go to the top right corner and a overlay with 3 bars appears. Click that and turn off auto play.

    • Haha. I didn't know that was there. Yep, turned off and it still plays in the next article you read. Autoplay is my most hated of all ad forms.

If you wanted to stop completely, I use a this extension Disable html 5 autoplay for chrome

Videos still buffer in the background and you just click on it to play

        • Thanks for the tip. I had used it previously but it interfered with another site and I could never get the exception rule/whitelisting to work.

Better yet, don't go to that worthless piece of s*** site in the first place. Most of their stuff is just stolen from Reddit and other news sites and the rest is just clickbait journalism.

It's fun to see how many primary school level spelling errors, glaring grammatical errors, completely wrong words for the purpose, or sentences that make completely no sense that you can observe in one day. Hint: it's HEAPS. They must hire imbeciles, seriously.

For the many folks out there already using an AdBlocker, here’s how you can add a couple of custom rules you can add to AdBlock Plus to stop these videos from running.

Click on AdBlock and choose “Options”.
In the top menu bar, click on “Customize”.
In the lower part, click on the “Edit” button next to the “Manually edit your filters” heading.
When you’re there, add the following two lines to the list of filters to block:

    http://ffxapm-a.akamaihd.net/*videoId=
    newsvidwsj.news.com.au
    brightcove$domain=nzherald.co.nz
The first one will block videos from running on smh.com.au, theage.com.au and (probably AFR) as the videos themselves come down from Fairfax’s account with Akamai, a content delivery network. Note that it is just blocking requests with videoId= in them – so other stuff coming from Fairfax’s Akamai account will still work.
