Anyone Buy The $20 Caltex Starcash through Groupon?

I bought two (well technically my wife purchased the 2nd….) and neither work. Redeemed as per instructions and printed the starcash cards. Upon scanning in store the attendant says they don't work. Have tried twice so far with no luck.

Upon contacting Groupon I got three responses explaining how to redeem the vouchers. I had to explain it in one syllable words three times and use the words 'scam' and 'Queensland Consumer Affairs' before they announced they'd look into it over the next 7 days.

      Quite helpful.

        I'm answering your question, aren't I?

  • I was going to buy it but it isn't accepted at the stations near me. Is the one you tried at listed on here. Turn on Filter: StarCash Digital accepted

  • Indeed it is listed when the filter is applied. The attendant was familiar with the digital gift card.

Just used it today using my iPhone Wallet app, worked perfectly. Have to use at a Caltex owned Starmart only (made the mistake of going to a Woolies owned one the first time) and need to just get them to put through $20 transactions then scan the QR code and then press enter on the Eftpos. The manager came and helped out to put mine through but it worked perfectly.

    • God damn it!!! My local is also a Caltex owned Starmart.

Perhaps it's down to the attendant. I have zero faith of Groupon's Indian support centre fixing this.

Yeah I think they really need to know how to redeem the StarCash at your local, I reckon give them a call and ask if the manager knows how to do it. It's a bit of a confusing process but it should go like this:

        1. Attendant Presses Pay with StarCash on their terminal ($20 transaction)
        2. Attendant Scans the QR Code on their Green Barcode Machine
        3. Eftpos machine will say PIN or Enter and then you (or the attendant) presses enter.
        4. It processes and goes through like a normal Eftpos transaction.

Let them know this next time you go, I had 3 and I used them all in the same transaction by doing this 3 times over. The attendant was a bit confused but her manager showed her the process.

Did you use the QR code from the Groupon receipt or by redeeming at the host website then re-routing through the wallet app website?

        • Thanks for this.

I tried everything. QR code on the groupon receipt was no go - so I redeemed via the host website but printed the starcash (which has the QR code.)

        • Haven't used mine yet but glad to have this info on hand in case they have difficulties when I present it.

I followed the instructions and printed off the StarCash voucher, complete with the QR code.

Fronted up to my local Caltex station fill my car with petrol and present the coupon (in part payment). Attendant looked at the voucher and said I could not use it - reason: he had no knowledge of the issue of such vouchers.

Emailed Groupon and told them I want a refund - still waiting!

    • Groupon won't even comprehend your email.

Thankfully their Woolworths Online voucher worked a treat. $30 off the shop for $5. One down, nine to go.

Good luck with it. Maybe if they get a few they'll realise there's a problem.

    • I also did this, but turns out the instructions say you have to redeem online via host.groupon.com.au/caltex and put details in, retrieve digital card & then when you put it in the eftpos machine, enter ok instead of a pin, it's under "how to redeem".

  • used one just yesterday. worked without a hitch.

  • Got another superb reply from groupon which says "Sorry to advise but Caltex refuse to refund" Thank you come again."

    • maybe try a different caltex?

      • Yeah, that's the plan. Just need to consume some petrol first.

actually - i just used mine this morning. I went in and asked the attendant first and he confirmed they take it.

But even better - he suggested that i can "prepay" for the petrol (to ensure the voucher works), so thats what i did. I paid using the voucher, went to the nozzle and it was great because the nozzle stopped (and beeped) at exactly $20.

        • @SmiTTy:

          Thanks, will do that.

  • I tried it at two caltex (woolies and non Woolies) and neither worked.
I even downloaded the wallet app and tried it but no luck.

Does anyone know if you need to use the full amount in one go?

  • I got it and used it just today! I downloaded it as a qr code via the Wallet app on iPhone. The attendant knew exactly what it was and scanned it and it worked perfectly. As far as I can tell you don't need to use it all in one go, it's like a giftcard not a voucher. So pleased with it and wish I bought more now (even though technically you can only buy one per person).

    • More available now but no 15% off atm.

  • I had the same problem the other day - guy confirmed they take starcash. once he tried to scan the barcode it didn't work.

  • Caltex are idiots. I've giving them one last chance then hitting them via social media to demand a refund.

Used my one yesterday at Caltex W/ starmart. No problems, fuelled up first then went to pay. Staff knew what to do with it.
    GL OP.

  • I had to drive to Kenmore to use mine in the end. The staff member had no clue but her boss worked it out for her. Won't buy again.

  • Has anyone been successful in redeeming their code?

I have tried to follow the instructions.

    Redeem online: http://host.groupon.com.au/caltex
    (1) Input your Groupon Security Code to obtain your unique Caltex link
    (2) Click on link to retrieve your Caltex StarCash Digital Card

Says my code (from the top of the Groupon PDF) is invalid, I have never used it.

    This is too hard.
