30% off Socks Storewide + $1 Charity Donation Per "Pear" Sold @ Odd Pears

EOFY

Hey Guys, my name is Brock! I'm 25, live in Mudjimba which is a small coastal town on the Sunshine Coast, QLD, and run Odd Pears from the garage. I've been working Odd Pears since I was 21 so we're almost 4 years young.

First time poster (kind-of)… I actually stuffed this up last year when I posted our Financial Year sale so I'll be sure to post correctly this time (I'm so sorry OzBargain Team!)

$13.30 per Pear of 3 socks.

It's our mission to encourage individuality and help the planet. A little ambitious for some cynics I know. We sell socks in 3's: 2 matching and 1 odd. Great for us odd balls who like being a bit different and when the washing machine/dryer eats your other one. We also donate $1 to charity for every Pear sold. This donation can be used however you like. What I mean is we can donate to your local food or animal shelter or we could donate to UNICEF or Red Cross. As long as they accept online donations.

I want to be really open, honest and transparent here and say I cannot compete with similar Adidas or Bonds sock deals who can markdown to as little as a few dollars per pair. Odd Pears sell 3 socks so manufacturing cost will always be greater for a "Pear" because you're getting the 3 socks. We also produce in small runs, donate to charity, advertise, and continue servicing the debt associated with starting this business and the ongoing expenses related to running it (rent, phone, internet, storage, maintenance etc). If any of you are interested in a proper breakdown of operating costs and margins then please get in touch. I have never paid myself a wage, "lined my pockets" and for those wondering how I survive I also work full-time at Nike (not to mention the amazing support of my partner, family and friends!)

Gosh I sound like I'm complaining! I promise you I'm not and I wouldn't trade ANY of the struggle for ANYTHING! I just want to be open and honest with a community that has helped me so much these last few years. Some of the business related OzBargains over the years: I went to India for $650 on Thai Airways to source our manufacturer; I bought Masters storage containers for $6; I bought Bunnings shelving for $189; I've been to Sydney and Melbourne on Tiger and Jetstar sales for meetings; I purchased a Brother printer for $39; I could go on forever (literally).

I use this forum every single day and it's been paramount in helping save money where money has always been so tight. The money raised from this promotion will further fund my product development and my companies growth. Odd Pears is still only small but I'm getting there slowly!

Anyway, perhaps you need a new sock drawer? Perhaps you want to stock up the gift drawers? Perhaps you want to be ultra prepared for Christmas 2017? Whatever the case I promise you'll love your first "Pears" of socks!

I'm so sorry for rambling! Any questions just comment below and I'll get back to you. Also you can always email me directly via [email protected], always happy to help, answer questions or chat. Furthermore if I can ever be of assistance in regards to digital marketing, product development or small business questions of any-sort then please shoot me an email. I have, fortunately, learnt a couple things these last few years haha.

Although I won't be purchasing today I just wanted to say I like your designs and wish you the best in your venture. You sound like a nice person and seem to have your head screwed on correctly.

    • Hello, oh no problem at all and thank you so much for your kind words. I truly truly appreciate it!

  • Not for me, but could see us purchasing as a fun present.

You did ramble on though. I would stick to one paragraph or so next time and let the product speak for itself instead of telling your life story. To me, it sounds like you are trying to convince yourself that it's a good product instead of being confident in what you are selling.

But that's just me :) good luck, I like the designs. Keep in mind that ozbargain can be harsh when it comes to premium brands and things like $20 for a pair of socks would be a hard sell here.

    • No problem at all and appreciate the feedback. My apologies for the ramble I was hoping to give a little backstory to the product and my history so I could also offer any assistance to burgeoning small business owners themselves. For future posts I'll certainly keep it a simpler.

Again, thank you so much and shoot me any questions if ever I can help :) Brock.

      • I'll contradict myself by now talking about your business instead of this specific deal :)

As I assume much of your sales are presents, I'm surprised you don't have a small square gift box with a similar design that you can add with your purchase. Something that fits up to say 3 pairs (or maybe just 2 as it's six individual socks) but which is still suitable for just 1 pair, preferably not too extensive (say $6 maybe as an upper limit). This would make it much more attractive as a present.

        • Hahah! I've been looking to add something like it recently and we'll certainly have something like it before Christmas this year. Watch this space! haha :)

I use this forum every single day

We like to see prices. Bargains have prices.

  • At OzBargain the description area resembles a shop window. Invest 3 minutes adding 4+ example bargains with direct links and obviously prices to generate Members' interest. Your 'edit' button is between 'view' and 'revisions'.

  • Do you think you'll make socks in Australia in the future? If there's a high quality locally made option I'd select that over cheaper imported socks (noting that quality items can be imported - but these also have a long trip to arrive to our sunny shores).

I have a really great relationship with the factory in India having visited them a couple of time in 2013 when I placed the initial production run. It wasn't just a price consideration when choosing offshore manufacturing it was also the concept of Pearing our socks into 3's: 2 matching 1 odd per Pear. When factories here and in other countries around the world heard that they switched off. Not to mention our small minimum order quantities per style/size. For this reason it's unlikely but I would more prefer to see us specialising in a specific type-of-sock (think athletic) in-house here in Australia. In saying all that: I couldn't agree more with you and wish that locally was more of an option!

Must the prices remain a secret? We come here for bargains. Bargains have prices.

        • Not at all sorry PJC, price will be $13.30 after discount which includes donation and 3 socks per Pear. I know not the most traditional 'OzBargain' and I apologise I cannot compete with other sock deals by Bonds and the like. It is however similar value to Happy Socks and the like posts in the past which receive a bit of love here. My apologies for not replying sooner! Brock

        • @brocksykes: The prices need to be in the description.
