Are Direct Imports from Kogan (Samsung Gear S3 Classic) OK?

Just checking as I've never purchased from Kogan before, has anyone had issues with their direct (grey market) imports? Specifically I'm looking at the Gear S3 Classic and it is $399 from there and up towards $500 everywhere else.

https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/samsung-gear-s3-classic-samsung…

The price discrepancy is what concerns me, is this a case of a deal being a little too good?

The sites says there are no differences except for "Australian compliant generic charger", I'm concerned that this is a dodgy charger that will fail, or a huge power adapter that will take up a massive amount of bench/wall space.

If anyone has purchased grey market from Kogan, i'd love to hear your experience.

Cheers

  • I got it for $315 using the 15% off coupon from a small ebay store.

    No problems here.

"Generic charger" usually means the original charger with a travel plug adapter thrown in.

I suppose you're aware that you are not covered by Australian Consumer Law (ACL) if you purchase grey imports. It's my opinion that since devices fail infrequently it's worth saving the money each and every time you buy cheap electornics by using grey imports however you should be prepared to pay the replacement cost if an item does fail.

  • The ACL should cover you if the grey import is sold by a company registered in Australia, shouldn't it?

    • Kogan sells phones and the like from a company registered in Hong Kong.

    • as i noted below, thought i'd reply here again though, they do state on the website that they will comply with the ACL for sales from HK as well:

""Kogan HK will repair, replace or refund faulty or damaged Products in accordance with the Warranty Terms and Conditions and Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.""

  • I'd understand the ACL not applying for Ebay, being an auction site, but surely a n australian registered store needs to comply.

Looking deeper at the site, the do supply through a hong kong registered company as well:

"It is important to note that Kogan Australia supplies and supports all warranties relating to Products which are noted as being offered and supplied by Kogan Australia ("KA Products")."

that would possibly allow Kogan HK to circumvent the ACL, the trouble is, right through to the final checkout, there is nothing to say wether its HK or Aus Kogan you are dealing with. Considering the initial contact is through the australian site, if it was then stated (post purchase) that you dealt with HK Kogan, this could be false or misleading?

Bottom of each product page says "supplied by Kogan HK" or " supplied by Kogan Australia" and there are different T&C for each…

Personally I prefer to pay the extra but many people successfully shop,at Kogan.

  • ah yes, can see it there now, my bad:

"This Product is offered and supplied by Kogan HK Limited pursuant to the Terms and Conditions."

    https://www.kogan.com/au/terms-and-conditions/

i think i'll give it a miss considering my ACL rights would be very flaky dealing with a HK registered company

    <edit>

    This bit is interesting though:
"Kogan HK will repair, replace or refund faulty or damaged Products in accordance with the Warranty Terms and Conditions and Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law."

think i'll just wait for a sale somewhere else though to bring the price closer.

I work off the idea that if the price difference is AUS is no more than say 15%, i'd usually always buy from a store in AUS. Better warranty, better service. I actually got mine from HN after price matching from a local store…I cant remember the store name, but if you go down this route, i'll look through the archives

  • Does anyone know if Samsung Pay works with the version from Kogan - the website states that Samsung Pay may not work?
