Configure a Smart Meter to Get Charge with Time of Use Tariff

I am living in NSW with a standalone house and using a smart meter with solar feed in.

I would like to change the flat tariff to time of use tariff, Energy Australia advice that my smart meter needed for a upgrade or reconfigure.

Is any Ozbargainer is a technician who is doing this? how much it will cost and how long this may take?

Thanks in advance.

You don't own the meter, and neither you nor anyone other than the owner of the meter can replace or configure it.

    • Is there any cost associate?

      • You'll need to ask your supplier.

  • Just stick a screwdriver in there

  • Check with an electrician who does Level 2 contestable work. Get the meter brand and model number handy and they should be able to help.

  • If you ring around other suppliers you are very likely to find one who will perform this work for free.
Before you do, consider if it is the best tariff for you.
Companies like Energy Locals offer good prices and high feed in tariffs. Are you sure a time of use tariff would be a better bet?

Otherwise, if you really want to pay for it yourself, nrg2010 is correct. My sister-in-law was charged approx $600 for this in Sydney at the end of last year.

    • I am unsure about if time of use is the best for us, my logic is we have solar panel, during the peak time we will be out for work and get back home about 19:00, if we are on holiday the solar panel can offset some of our energy consumption.

if I have to fork out $600 then it will not feasible as i do think I can make $600 in saving in electricity in at least 5 years.

Energy Australia ask me to call our distributor which it is Ausgrid, I am not sure switching energy provider can waive the fee.

      • If you are returning from work at 7pm to cook etc, you will use most of your power then. A time of use tariff will be a very bad choice. Energy Australia peak time runs till 9pm.

Look at the companies with high feed in tariffs. I understand Origin is offering 15c and Energy Locals and Powershop 11c. Those plus normal 25c kWh flat rate will almost certainly be your best bet unless you have very bizarre power usage.

  • Try other providers as mentioned above. I'm in Vic and had my tariff changed with Powershop a few years ago without changing the meter. It took them a few months to do so but Powershop were kind enough to offer credit for the extra cost per kilowatt hours (got approx 1 month usage credited)
