Info about Kodi - Which One to Buy for Especially Indian Channels

Hi , I have not used Kodi but my understanding is that it is a Jail Broken software where you can watch live channels from other countries - probably get free Netflix etc too so I was hoping I get it for mum and dad who are from India and they can watch their old Channels. Does anyone have any info and recommendations please ?

Kodi is just an android application that you can download and install on different devices - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.xbmc.kodi&…. You can even install this on your phone or a tablet. Most people though buy a media box from eBay which might come with Kodi installed. What you do with it then is up to you. It is an application, but it is also a platform through which you can add further applications (add-ons) that boost its capabilities.

In all versions of Kodi you would be able to find these add-ons that would allow you to add on some Indian channels. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Have a look online and see if you can confirm these add-ons exist and then search for Kodi on eBay - you'll have heaps of choice.

Oh - and its not "jailbroken". That implies that the software was hacked. It was actually a media player that was originally developed for the first Xbox (Xbox Media Center). The team had great success and continued to build and add capabilities to what is a very stable platform and very well supported community of developers.

      • Thanks a lot for the advice please. I'm hopeless in this department. I probably just need someone to guide me like buy this one - it's good deal and you can watch the 3 Indian channels - 1. Sony 2. Star PLUS and 3. Colors on it and that would change my life lol

        • It's probably not so simple as buying a device which already has the box configured for your channels. You would most likely need to find and install the channels yourself, which isn't hard - just requires a little research. Also - I believe there is no such thing as free netflix, you still need an account to access that content.

        • Maybe look at the Xiaomi mi box that was just advertised here and just read up or watch a few youtube videos to install it :)

      • If you would like to install Kodi on ios without a mac then the device needs to be jailbroken!..

  • actually, Kodi is available on multiple platforms - android, windows, mac, linux there are even builds on steamlink and raspberry pi.

So if you have an old pc you can get the same result

  • i suggest if you have an android phone to try out kodi and installing your add ons yourself before buying a media box.
add ons are getting harder and harder to find, install and replace. well more time consuming.

  • Buy BTV or Real TV or Optus Fetch TV and add Indian TV package

  • You might be better off getting a streaming specific box. www.reddit.com/r/iptv is a pretty good resource.

  • Merged from Which Kodi Should I Buy or Which One Did You Buy ?

    Hi Guys
Heard a lot about Kodi and free streaming and stuff and also that I can stream live channels from Indian TV by adding an add on on it.
I am not sure not which one is the best value for money so hoping if you can share which one you bought off ebay etc please ? Something I can plug into my samsung smart tv and get going please ?

Save your money and install Kodi on your computer.

      Then connect via HDMI.

      • That's a great idea if I was that smart lol

If you can't do that, perhaps Kodi is not for you. It requires a bit of tinkering to get the addons to install, even harder now that some popular ones have shut down. I had to install Libreelec on my Kodi box to get it to work properly. Most cheap Kodi boxes running on top of Android has issues, just enough to turn your life into a part time tech support for other users of the box.

        • If you even struggle to install Kodi on a PC (which is the easiest step), you should probably find another source for your TV programs. You will need some IT knowledge to set up Kodi properly. This is not a download and it magically works kinda software.

      • So inelegant. A stand alone android box is a much better solution.

        • Are you kidding? OP said best value for money.

My solution is as cheap as it gets, and does the same thing. And OP likely has a HDMI cord already, making my suggestion free.

@BensonP: I agree, if you are looking for the bogan solution, that is it.

I bought the Mini M8S? from Gearbest this one I believe?

      Specifications:
      Android 6 64bit
      Amlogic s905x
2GB RAM (1GB RAM for 8GB ROM model not recommended)
      8/16GB ROM
      Bluetooth 4.0
      b/g/n Wi-Fi
      100mbps LAN
      2 USB 2.0 ports
      SD card
      SPDIF
      HDMI

Plays movies beautifully, does VP9 and H265 in 4K.
The remote has an excellent angle performance, it also feels so much better quality than the cheap tv remotes, don't get me wrong though the remote isn't high quality.
the Wi-Fi is quite poor, when using n it'll achieve around 15mbps?.
Sometimes when watching a movie in Kodi and you change to another movie through Kodi's interface Kodi will crash, Kodi will also crash when it's on and you press the home button on the remote.

There is the Mini M8S that is basically better/faster at gaming, but this one is better at movies.

      • This looks great. So do I just buy it and it comes ready to go and maybe I just have to install add ons or is it more than that please ?

        • +1

Yeah it's just plug and play, it comes with some kodi addons now e sure which, if it's not the ones that you want you can just install more came.

        • +1

the add ons that come with it are those you know free streaming services, I've never used them though as I only have data on my phone.

    • Kodi is software that gets installed on hardware. You don't actually buy Kodi. And Kodi does not provide any pirated content. Its the 3rd party add-ons that do that.

    • Hey guys I just discovered plex
Can anyone explain how kodi is different?
      Thanks

If only there was a repository of knowledge available, with a simple search engine, to answer questions like this. Alas.

I used older versions of Kodi (XBMC), while it was good, it definitely wasn't intuitive and required a lot of playing around. Fine for me, but many others would struggle. I have since moved to Plex as I couldn't be bothered with the more complex option. Plex is great, gets updated frequently and is quite simple to use.

Plex would be my recommendation of the two, there is a paid version as well which offers some other good features.

        • Cheers mate
          I'm thinking the same

    • are all Kodi add-ons buggy and poor quality ?

      • +1

        No.
tons of HD and good qualty streams. just googl best kodi addons.

    • Ebay > Amazon fire stick.

thtas your easiest solution if you want it to be easy.
      Then just google best addons.

  • Hi Guys
Thanks a lot for your help.
So I am convinced I need kodi but I am not sure not which one is the best value for money so hoping if you can share which one you bought off ebay etc please ? Something I can plug into my samsung smart tv and get going please ?
