Is This The End for Bucks as Coach of The Pies?

To fellow Pies' supporters or AFL fans in general, what's your view on Bucks? Dead man walking? Should he be sacked now, sacked at the end of the season or should he be given another 3 years like Hardwick last year?

Personally I like the guy, was a great player, but it's been deja vu for the past 4 years, it really sucks being out of finals contention so early every year. Still not convinced he can actually coach (being a great player doesn't always translate to being a great coach), however surely he should be a better coach now than when he took over in 2012. Our trading during his time as coach has turned out pretty shocking and our foot skills are terrible.

Open to any comments about Bucks, or our playing list or anything else re the Pies.

  • As you stated "being a great player doesn't always translate to being a great coach".
The best coaches like Clarkson were team players and didn't stand out individually?

    • You're right, champion players like Hird/Voss both got sacked. Still reckon he can turn it around with the right list, taking over a team at the top did him no favours, especially when many were devoted Malthouse fans. However, supporters are growing increasingly impatient given this is his 6th year as coach and 4th consecutive year of missing finals.

  • As a wise man once said…

    "GOOOORRRRRRNNNNNEEEEE"

    • That's the likely outcome, however, we could still easily be in finals contention if we took our opportunities in the first half of the season (dominated inside 50s in most games), also suffered a few injuries at inopportune times.

  • Once the board states "The coach has the full confidence and support of the the board" The coach he will be sacked pretty soon after that.

Always awkward when the coach is from the same club. Even more so, if a legend. Unsuccessful coaches can be dispatched with much less sentiment if they are from another club.

The whole Shaw-Malthouse-Buckley coach saga was done with all the drama , that Collingwood seems to excel at.

It seems clear that Buckley is finished.

I wonder who will be the new coach?

    • Wouldn't mind Clarkson or Longmire, but that's unlikely. Not convinced about B Scott (screams another Hardwick to me), also talk of Ratten or another handover arrangement with Roos, similar to what he did with Melbourne. Whoever we get, we definitely need to get right our draft picks and trades this year.

  • +1

I'm still confused why they sacked Malthouse. I expect he is done but there's not many people knocking down the door to replace him. You need an experienced coach not a new one imo.

    • I think it was more Eddie not wanting to risk Bucks (favourite son) leaving to coach another club, so they put this arrangement in place. In hindsight, don't think the handover was right for all parties concerned, Malthouse was still coaching well at the time and had a relatively young side who were also playing well, coming off a premiership in 2010 and a GF in 2011. If we are going to get a rookie coach, might as well keep Bucks.

    • As a Collingwood hating lifelong Carlton member I totally support any move to bring Malthouse back to the pies! Seeing Malthouse at the pies doing to you guys what he did to us would be sweet sweet irony!………….And hands off Bolton before you get any ideas!

  • Still reckon we can do a Richmond and rebound in 2018 if we keep Bucks. We need to get our draft picks right, offload a few key personnel through trades and clean out our assistant coaches and fitness guru.
