Hospital Cover

Hi guys

I'm a bit out of my depth. Please help me.

I've never purchased health insurance on my own.

I recently turned 21, and as a result was (by default) removed from my Parents' Hospital cover. I'm not interested in health insurance, but when it comes to JUST hospital cover (in case I need to be airlifted/transported to hospital for whatever reason), where do I start?

Do I steer clear of the big insurance companies such as NIB and Medibank? Are there any inclusions/catches I should be aware of?

My dad mentioned that it should only be like $60 a year or something like that. I don't do any crazy activities that should affect my likelihood of needing an ambulance.

Can someone please direct me In the right direction?

Thank you guys!

youre only removed once youre 21 if you stopped studying full time. If you are still studying full time, you can remain on the same cover.

sounds like your after ambulance only cover. bupa is about $40 per yr

  • What state are you in?

  • Is ambulance your main concern? Or do you intend to use services in hospital? If it's ambo only, you don't need hospital cover - just buy ambulance cover. It's much cheaper.

You could always self-insure, ambulance cover is relatively inexpensive, maybe 1k tops generally less or free depending where you live. I like to keep a little aside as a rainy day account that this kind of expense could be paid from. Cause really do you want to pay even $60 a year for something your unlikely to use and could afford to pay in the remote chance you do.

  • Some health funds will cover you for hospital cover under your parent's policy, up to the age of 25 regardless of whether they are working or a student. PROVIDED you take out an extra's cover policy with them.
For example, our son is 22 and working full time. We are with Navy Health and he is covered for hospital under our policy as he has taken out an Extra's Policy with them at a cost of about $500pa

Even modest hospital/extras cover as a stand alone policy will run you around $1,500 pa

  • Hi, If you just want Ambulance cover in NSW or ACT for emergencies only Medibank provides options. $29.40 per every 6 months or $59.80 per year. HCF offers yearly fee of $51.10. This includes all Ambulance Emergency coverage including retrieval from accident site by Air Ambulance and Helicopter rescue( esp. if you ski). All Health Insurance companies must provide Emergency Ambulance Cover. Hope this helps.

Ambulance and Hospital cover are two different products.

Ambulance cover is needed if you ever need to be transported by an ambulance. Definitely get this sort of cover. If you don't have this cover you will be out of pocket at least $400 for each trip.

Hospital cover is needed if you want to stay in a private hospital. If you only want to use the public system then you can skip this. When you get Hospital cover you also usually get Ambulance cover included as wel.

Extras cover is additional insurance for things like dental, physio, optical etc. You can claim a certain amount in each of these categories per year.

If you've been covered under your parent's insurance then you're probably not aware of the out of pocket costs of medical care. Medical cost can be quite costly.

If you want some advice about insurance then why not speak to your parent's insurance company. They could recommend the sort of cover that suits you based on your previous use,

    • Thanks for being so clear. Helps a lot!

  • Why have you been removed? For me it was cheaper to be on my parents until I turn 25.

    Are you still studying?

At the very LEAST get ambulance cover.
