$80 Kmart Vacuum BS Hype?

So I saw an article on news.com.au about an $80 Kmart vacuum that apparently everyone is raving about as being awesome… seems a bit like a paid spot to me though.

Anyone "professionals" have any experience with this vac? Does it suck? Or does it suck?

    It sucks

    • Blow it out your rear!

  • I recently posted about it on a Dyson deal, a couple people intend on trying it out:

New-out-of-the-box vacuum cleaners always works well. The article probably shows a picture of when they first used that $89 vacuum. Their dydson mentioned in the article probably is a little older or needs a good clean for it to be working well again. It would be good to see how well that K-mart vacuum does 1-2 years down the track.

Yep, very much this. First vacuum I bought was a $70 K-mart, was decent for a few months before suction went. Then gambled on a $50 Aldi vacuum, same result. Learnt my lesson after that and got a $200 Miele, it completely blows (sucks?) cheaper vacuums out of the water.

You're probably right. I bought a regular $80 vacuum from Kmart for mum and it broke down in no-time.
She uses it for the car. Just can't beat that Miele quality and bagged cleaner strength.

However, this $80 vacuum should be better than the previous piece of carp.
        Why?
It seems to be rated at a higher suction, it has bristles that flick dirt up, the bin capacity is modest to limit "choking", there's less surface area from the motor to the suction head meaning less frictional losses, and the filtration unit is further above the suction path causing less bottlenecks. Overall this is a more efficient design, so its no surprise that it functions well.

        The only issues are reliability.
But for $89 it does seem to offer some good value, but the real test will be when you give it a whirl at home.

PS I still have my $50 $30 Aldi vacuum cleaner, it sucks in a bad way : (

The pictures supporting the article are bs - no way a clean freak that vacuums twice a day gets a whole container of dirt unless the vacuum she was using had 0 suction

even with a carpet steam cleaning or a vax you wont be getting that much dirt out from a carpet

what if the kmart vacuum was shipped with a heap of dirt inside? That would be a pretty clever marketing trick IMO…

News.com.au seems to be all paid articles or celebrity gossip these days, or opinion pieces that sound like they've been written by teenagers.

Another mum shared that she had broken her $2000 vacuum

mums that can afford $2k vacuums don't do it themselves. they hire someone else to do it for $20 p/h.

dyson products are overpriced and underpowered. i wouldn't be surprised if a generic branded item outperformed it. finding value would be to look at established brands who offer similiar items at the same price range to the generic but with better warranty/support.

Don't know about underpowered but they are definitely overpriced.

  • people have to realise that the media is owned by corporations

If they tell you coconut water or quinoa is good for you, you'll believe it

    • Do they come free with the vacuum cleaners?

  • The Dyson that my mum bought is crap it was broken from when she first bought it new! The telescopic handle never locked out proper it was a pain to try and get fixed. They gave her the run around. The suction is very average without the head on its hard to see that it is working. The only good part is the head its good for cleaning carpets and if you have pets it will come in handy. Even that constantly stops for no reason if you try and suck up some bigger dirt. Mum got sucked in by the hype of Dyson.

My partner bought the cordless model and unlike my mums house its hardly ever used. Its already falling apart after 2 years the locking system that holds in the dirt is broken it stays closed by tape lol. Battery life is below average when compared to a similar battery pack from a drill. The charging cradle never worked properly from the start and you have to make sure its charging. For a cordless vac it does have some power i will give it that.

I expect my mum and bros to break the one at home seeing as they are belligerent but for my girlfriends Dyson to break is a sign of bad build quality.

    Yep Dyson is all hype!

  • Yeah, I have a feeling that they may be good at first, then wear out pretty fast. Obviously they are made cheaply and to be disposable being a kmart product. I do also agree that Dyson is probably a lot of hype, but are still very capable vacuums. That being said, my next one is very likely to be a Meile.

  • On the FB Kmart Mum's page (which I may have joined out of curiosity re the vacuum) - reviews are mixed. Some people are complaining it rips up their carpet.
