Taking Payment Via PayPal with No Risk

Is there any way to receive money for something I sold on Gumtree, without them being able to get a refund just by submitting ticket? I am selling a GPU, which is 100% working, but I am worried by these scams I see.

EDIT:Okay cheers for the help! Looks like ill be staying away from Paypal. Will accept bank transfer only. Still a risk, but lower

    Cash - always cash for gumtree.

    Gumtree=PayPal

    Unless you wanna lose money.

  • Tell them to send PayPal via family friend transfer not via send as payment.

    If they send the wrong method just reject and refund straight away.

    • The purchaser can do a credit card chargeback after using PayPal's friends & family transfer. There's a story on here last month about it where the OP did his dough.

      Gumtree = cash only

        really? wow then thats it. no more paypal

    Cash on pickup, or direct bank transfer and you deliver once the funds are cleared

    • Cash only for me…

  • I think you can't request a refund if you send via the Paypal family and friends option?

      A chance the buyer may do a charge back, in that situation, you would have to fight with PayPal to no pass the charge back on to you.

      • Really? Last time I couldn't lodge a dispute when I received damaged item because Paypal said I sent via family and friends not via sale option…

          I mean a charge back via your bank cc. You dont even need to tell PayPal for those charge backs, but they won't like you.

    I see something fishy here.

    Why would someone claim back if they are happy with what they have bought. Change of mind is not applicable when selling used goods.

    Unless something is sold dodgy.

    Paypal or cash should be safer bet.

      because they want the item for free

      As chenrenchun said.

      If a scammer found a seller that would accept Paypal for a Gumtree purchase, they would surely cream their pants.

      Agree buyer may look to get it free, but dont understand why i am negged here?

      I am trying to be fair here to say with what OP has given, seller may be dubious too which is often seen on gumtree

      • The pay via paypal and pickup, then get it free is a well know scam. Thats why!

        Nothing to do if anything is wrong with the item or not.

      • Because receiving payment via PayPal leaves the seller exposed to the buyer making false claims as part of a PayPal dispute. By not accepting PayPal, that risk factor can be removed.

  • Gumtree themselves recommend cash only.

      not any more, gumtree are doing a big paypal push. So they can skim money off the transactions via fees

      Until paypal closes the 'chargeback' issue, no paypal for pickups. Too many scammers.

  • Bank Transfer/Direct Deposit only.

  • Okay cheers for the help! Looks like ill be staying away from Paypal. Will accept bank transfer only. Still a risk, but lower

    • Bank transfer is not a risk. As long as you wait until the funds are visible in your account before sending the item (i.e. don't send on the basis of a payment confirmation alone as they can easily be photoshopped).

      Once the funds are in your bank account they have no way to take them away from you.

      • Funny, I used to think that too, until one day I was reconciling my business' bank account, and saw we were accidentally paid twice for the same thing by a customer using bank transfer (we only offer bank transfer as the payment method), and then the following day one of those transactions was reversed/debited from the account, all with no action or authorization on our behalf, and we were never contacted by either the customer or the bank about it. I would not have thought it was possible, if I had not seen it myself, but apparently there are some limited situations in which funds that are transferred into your bank account can be debited, without the account holder's authorization, e.g. if you're a large established business and you pay something twice by mistake. So I'd say that it's probably not an issue for transfers between individuals, but just to be sure, ever since I saw that I'm now strictly in-person and cash-only for gumtree transactions.

        • Nice to know!

          Out of interest, did you speak to your customer and they confirmed double-payment? If not then maybe it was a bank error and they, I assume, have the power to reverse their own errors.

        • @tomclancy: No, I did not (personal philosophy: never draw attention to a customer's mistake unless you can do something about it!), but their accounts payable system generates an automated "Remittance Advice" email when they pay something, and we got sent two of those for the same thing (so it was the customer rather than the bank), and when I got around to reading those emails the following day, I went and checked the bank account, assuming we'd either put their account in credit or transfer it straight back to them (whichever they preferred), but instead saw that it had just been reversed. Good on one hand (don't have to do anything as the problem "fixed itself"), but bad on another (had assumed that this was not possible).
