  • Ooh just got the $48 gear VR from officeworks and it has the USB C port. Anyone know if this phone would physically fit?

    • +2

You have the SM-R323 which isn't officially compatible with the S8. But it's really only the USB-C connector that is different (in a relatively minor way that causes an alignment/seating issue) and since it's modular you can just use a USB-C connector from the 2017 model instead:

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Genuine-Samsung-Gear-VR3-2017-SM-…

You may be able to find one cheaper elsewhere.

    • Oh thanks all! Yeah I think it's the SM-R323 that cainn mentioned. Can't really see a model number on the box and I haven't opened it yet since I don't have a galaxy lol.

From what I read online, it's apparently the exact same headset as the newest one (minus the controller) though I get mixed reports everywhere :\

      • +3

Listen, I have both, and the USB-C connector is in fact different. See for yourself: http://imgur.com/a/ddOWG

        And another source: https://www.reddit.com/r/gearvr/wiki/faqs#wiki_what_is_the_d…

So all the "reports" you find on the net that claim that the headsets are identical are bullshit. Case closed on that front.

The question that remains then concerns what happens when you go ahead and use your S8 with the SM-R323 anyway. Will it work? Yes. But will the alignment be off because of the connector difference? Yes. What does this mean? It means that unless you haven't really bothered to optimize the manner in which you wear the headset for the best FOV (and sometimes regardless of that) you will see part of the image that is rendered for one eye with the "wrong" eye at the edge of your view, which really isn't very nice. Some of the people who do experience this probably just put up with it because they think it's normal. It's not.

(and the record there have also been reports that the S8+ doesn't actually seat properly and is therefore raised up slightly at the connector end due the connector being molded for contour of the Note 7 instead of the S8-series devices)

Again though you can solve this issue by acquiring a USB-C connector from the 2017 model because it does work with the 2016 model.

        • Informative. thanks a lot.

Didn't the 5% email deal exclude mobile phones in the t&c's?

    • And contracts, Yes.

  • +1

Oh, they released coral blue. Now my blue imported S8 doesn't feel special anymore =\

  • Ohh this or should I wait for the new Sony XZ1 compact later in the year?

    • Always wait, but Samsung support is at least top notch.

      • not when claiming warranty

        • +1

Ive had good experiences with the sydney samsung store. They were good to deal with.

        • I haven't been to Digimob, but I've been to two Samsung stores for two warranty jobs with positive experiences. On both occasions they've replaced each phone on the spot. I'd also suggest making a warranty appointment with Samsung Support first if your store happens to be busy, so you get seen on arrival without having to wait.

      • +1

Actually, you are deferred to the local authorized repairer who in WA & SA is Digimob. In my experience, and many others, their service is deplorable.

  • I imagine you'd have to get the right staff member at OW to price match that. Since technically it's "different" as it includes that bonus charger.

    • black is 999 as well minus the charger. should be able to match that hopefully

  • 5% email coupon not accepted as it exclusive phones :c

  • When did coral blue release in oz? I though it was grey, gold, and black only. Great price in any case.

    "TOUCH SCREEN"

JB's doing a good job of highlighting the stand out features.

  • Can anyone help me understand why this is good when we have had older deals on the S8 that are cheaper? Is it the color, or mostly not being grey import?

    • +1

honestly .. i have no idea either .. doesnt seem like a good deal to me.

    • I believe so, mainly not being a grey import and with the bonus wireless charger

    • It's $200 less than retail price, and comes with a wireless charger. If it's the quick charging qi charger, then that thing is worth about $99 on its own. And it's a colour you can't normally get in Aust. A nice colour at that.

Having said that, if you're not used to paying $1k outright for a phone, it's not a deal that will make you get in your car right now and drive to JB.

    • wondering this too. I suppose it just comes down to the risk and inconvenience of having to roll through a returns process with an international seller if you get a dud.

Having said that, some reports on here seem to suggest local warranty returns aren't that great either.

      • Having recently cracked my S7 edge screen and had to fix it through Samsung, I was told that Samsung would only repair phones bought locally. So that's that.
