This got to be the first known case of faulty airbag related fatality in Australia ey? Had my Toyota airbag replaced late last year, get yours done asap if parts are available.

Appears to be a survivable accident but killed by the airbag…

  • The poor bugger. Wonder why he didn't get his car done with the recalls?

Supply most likely. Not all cars are available for recall yet due to not having enough stock for the required repairs.

  • So, did the airbag deploy due to a fault and killing the driver, which caused the car to drive/hit the Celica?
Or did he collide with the Celica first, causing the airbags to deploy, and the driver was killed because of the airbag?

The reports aren't clear, and the wording makes it sound like the former. Yet to me its more likely they meant the latter.

It's the latter, it deployed after the crash which then killed the driver. The news is hitting more outlets now.

      • Cheers.
Yeah, pretty crappy eNg7i$h by paid journalists.

        • Post accident photos and video

Sucks to be in a survivable accident but then get killed by the airbag, poor man.

"Journalists" these days are bots and people that repeat press releases.

        • @Diji1: tomorrows headline - Top OZ website claims "Journalists these days are bots and people that repeat press releases."

    i'm never driving again

  • There is no stock to be honest
    thats the problem
    Takata is also BROKE

    • It is the responsibility of the vehicle manufacturer to ultimately cover the cost, even if Takata filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

      • thats great but considering takata are broke how do you think their going to make new parts if they haven't got the cash to do so
        Catch 22
I know people who are still waiting 6 months later, no stock is the excuse the dealer gives them

I live in yap, I don't need a car, but I am to afraid to fly over water, so stuck here forever

  • Still waiting for Toyota to contact us (2 cars) to make an appointment to replace.

    • I got a letter in the post about two months ago but haven't done anything about it yet. My car is being serviced next week so will enquire with the dealer

  • I thought I just seen a headline where the recalls have also been replaced with faulty units.

  • Tragic, but still very rare - over a thousand Australians are killed in car accidents each year despite functioning airbags. If we are serious about the road toll, we need radical changes.
