Will The Price of Krill Oil Tablets Fall with The New Grocery Bag Phase out?

So as some of you may be aware, Colesworth and Aldi are planning to phase out free plastic bags at the check out. The theory is that fish are allergic to plastic bags so are dying. Also fishermen get plastic bags stuck on there line slowing them down.

If we stop using plastic bags and less make it to the ocean then less fish will die so there will be more fish. Also fishermen will be able to catch more fish. This means more fish to make fish oil tablets. By the laws of supply and demand if supply increases and demand remains the same price should fall. Hence my theory is that we should be expecting some great bargains on fish unless this business about phasing out plastic bags ends up being fishy.

But what I'm not sure about is whether the price of krill oil tablets will also go down.

  • Any links to the theory about fish being allergic to plastic? This sounds very plausible so I'd love to find out more.

Surely the price of krill oil will increase though if there are more fish in the ocean eating them and depleting their stocks?

    • hmm that's a good point didn't think about it.

On the topic of plastic bags, if Coles and Woolworths indeed remove them I'll simply go to Aldi.

A number of my regular items are cheaper at Aldi but don't always go there because of the convenience of Coles and Woolworths, so if there's little point of difference between them and Aldi I'll go for the cheaper option and change my habits.

    • aldi don't sell krill oil

I am happy to pay more at Coles or Woolies just to get the free plastic bags!

      • Precisely. I go to Coles and Woolworths for the convenience of a bag even if my items cost a few cents more, so I'm effectively paying for my bags already.

But if I have to pay more again just for a bag then I'll move to Aldi.

  • Some states banned plastic bags years ago. All that introduced was 10-50c recyclable plastic bags everywhere.

    • but it would make some people reuse bags right?

      • Yep. Everyone rolls up to Coles with their reusable bags.

        • so i guess the move works.
i find that I keep forgetting my reuseable bags. Especially when you doing shopping on your way back from work or something.

@Gimli: We keep a zippered bag in the boot and every time we receive a cloth reusable tote, it goes into the bag in the boot.

If you're not in a car, the reusable bags fold down pretty small. I can keep 2 in my purse if I have to go shopping without a car.

        • @eyeballz2770: the problem is that i take it out of the car to bring the shopping home and then forget to put it back. I only realise when I'm at the supermarket.

        • Neg'd twice for that comment? Having spent years in one that has banned plastic bags it's exactly what happens. People go shopping with their reusable plastic bags.

Should we just throw them out after use? With Coles/Woolies charging about 15c for each bag it's going to get expensive quick. Very unOzBargain.

        • @Gimli: Haha, we kept forgetting to return them to the car, too. We've accumulated (for free!) at least 20 bags over the years, so we can forget them in the house and still have plenty left in the zippered bag.

  • Probably go up in price like everything else

    • yeah that's inflation

You're confusing fish oil with krill oil. Some fish eat krill.

So fewer plastic bags mean more fish, which mean fewer krill, hence krill oil price will go up.

    • krill oilonomics is not straight forward

aldi have never had free plastic bags

    • lol good point

  • I'm just wondering how this will affect Krull

    • does krull eat krill?

    • Depends if NZ supermarkets decide to ban bags too.

I'm for banning all supermarket plastic bags. The thought of a baby dolphin suffocating with a Woolies bag over its head horrifies me.

    • is that real or is that just greens propaganda.

I'm its logical that it effects sealife. I would think small to medium fish might be effected more. But that image of a suffocating dolphin I feel is just hype.

DOn't get me wrong I think we should get rid of bags. Just sometimes don't like the greenies hype, which makes people who do use a plastic bag look like evil dolphin killers.

      • If they spent their add money cleaning shit out the ocean I'd believe in them more…

        • I mean I think plastic bags are bad for the environment but I think it's about perspective.

@Gimli: I think if they want to be taken seriously they have to actually do something about things like garbage island.

    • If you care for dolphins (and whales) then stop consuming "seafood," particularly tuna.

Don't post when you're drunk man, it makes you look like a ….. well, you know.

    • Hey man theres been too many good deals on grog recently. 😋

Plastic bags are banned here in SA so instead you have to buy thicker plastic bags at the checkout making more money for the retailers.
If I really want plastic bags for free all I need to do is order online and my groceries get delivered in them. Sometimes I get one small product in one whole bag so there is never a shortage of plastic bags here even though they are "banned".

  • Discrimination I say.
    Bags are people to !.

    • Maybe in Tasmania

  • I look forward to Woolworths home delivery coping with this change.

    • Why will krill oil prices effect home delivery

      • I'm not sure that krill oil prices can deliver food to one's home. So asking the question why is a moot point (or mute to you I suspect?)
