Microsoft to drop / remove features from Windows 10 in Fall Creators Update (MS Paint, Windows System Image backup etc)

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4034825/features-th…

so according to Microsoft's internal documents, we'll be seeing quite a few built in Windows apps being removed entirely from the OS and some features to become hidden / dormant as they are no longer being actively updated or worked on.

Some of the noteworthy ones that are being removed, and what I would personally recommend as an alternative:

Paint - replace this with Paint.net or GIMP. If you take screenshots, try Greenshot
Outlook Express - replace this with Office 365 (actually Outlook Exp never worked for W7~W10 anyway)
Reader app - Microsoft Edge
Reading List - Microsoft Edge
Syskey - BitLocker (in Windows Pro edition)
System Image Backup (SIB) Solution - replace with EASUS todo Backup free

Would you miss the removal of Microsoft Paint? I personally would because it's such a simple app and having it removed means there's one extra thing I'd need to install to get a simple editing app.

I hate that they removed Programs and Features from the start menu. Also they removed Control Panel.
Hate that windows updates are now done through the Settings menu.
Makes our IT support life harder! It was perfectly fine in version 1607.
Don't even get me started on Server 2016!

    • +2

Control Panel still exist but now you have to either Pin it or search for it to make it appear.

      • Yeah I know but it was a lot easier right clicking on Start and having the main areas easily accessible.

    • You can ask Cortana to open it for you. Just say Open Control Panel or type in search.

      • +2

Bit hard when you're using remote tools to admin computers :p
Can't stand cortana. I disabled her. I prefer to press the windows key and start typing but right clicking start is always the quickest and easiest way.

      • +2

It's interesting to think that Cortana made her way from tedious tasks such opening the control panel in Sgt Salami's laptop to the integrated AI of the Pillar of Autumn.

She should do a motivational speaking tour.

The most sensible thing for MS to remove is the head of the person who's been responsible for making such a massive collection of unforced cockups since Win7.

It must be obvious to even them that they have sat in the golden goose.

removed Programs and Features from the start menu. Also they removed Control Panel

      The hell?

Also it should have stayed Add or Remove Programs, I still look for it everytime.

Paint was my go-to fast and simple image resizer.

I was about to say Outlook Express was removed many many years ago until I read it…

    Removing this non-functional legacy code.

    • hmm. Now that you say that, it doesn't exist on my PC anymore. It used to work actually, since it left as a leftover from a previous Windows install.

      • +1

It's not even compatible with Windows 7. Last time I saw it was when XP ended support in 2014 and a lot of people migrated to Live Mail.

Not really going to miss paint, wordpad works for pasting screenshots in

But I am going to miss the System Image Backup (SIB) Solution!!! BOOOO!!

    • Vastly better: Macrium Reflect Free. The OP also recommended EaseUS (Chinese developers). Plus many others. Should make Windows code leaner, easier to maintain.

      • I assume the entire 'windows backup' will be removed alone with the SIB, which is what I'll miss. Have a few clients who just use this and it 'works'. Rather than using a 3rd party app.

But thanks for the link, I'll check out Macrium as well, going to have to move to something now!

    Who is Microsoft….

  • +2

They have to remove functional apps to make room for more advertising… Windows 10 is a complete shit-show I went back to Windows 7.

    • I went further back… to good old windows XP…

  • +1

They are removing the OLD Paint program and placing the NEW Paint program instead.
Besides, you can side-load/install the old paint program if you like.
You can google to find a place to download it from.

NOT MS PAINT MY OLD FRIEND!!!!!!!!

Low resource no bull useful piece of software for what it does

  • They removed media player classic, you can still get that online and use it. I'm sure paint will be similar.

  • +2

Classic Paint is not going anywhere. It simply wont come preinstalled with windows which has been the case so far. Paint 3D is what will be preinstalled. They are going to bring classic Paint to the windows store probably through their desktop bridge and hence would more or less look the same and will be available to download for free. Sources below.
    WindowsCentral
    MSPowersuer

  • They probably removed paint due to no telemetry and no ads.

    Outlook Express - Thunderbird
    Reader app - Firefox
    Reading List - Firefox
Syskey - This was just to secure password hashes and never encryption of files.

  • Well looks like Paint is here to stay…in the Windows Store

I've only today decided to go back to Windows 7 Pro on the two new Dell laptops I bought through this site a few weeks ago.

After agonizing over the whole thing I decided that I just can't be bothered to learn a new OS, when 7 does everything that I could conceivably want!

Also, I know that all the 150+ items of software on my desktop works with 7, so I don't have to stuff around finding (and paying for) updated software that works on 10.

Just updating a few drivers is much easier.

  • +1

Microsoft has total control over your computer and your life with Windows 10.
Anyone still running Windows 7 should stay with it for now.

  • +2

You can always use snipping tool to create a screenshot, no hassle

  • They have Paint 3D now, as part of their default applications? Also syskey well, that'll be a loss for scammers. Not so much for the general user.

  • The right thing to have been done is Ms buy out .Paint as the better alternative to MS Paint and keep developing it as a decent graphics application for Windows….. 3D Paint is only useful for my daughter to make drawings with :|

  • up there with the removal of MS Imaging from office.. nothing views high res multipage TIFFs like this..

Just keep the legacy apps for us old folk who use them every day..

  • +1

i love that the internet is all over paints "death" but nobody bothered to actually confirm its "dead", which its not, its simply no longer being included in windows and will be moved to a windows store app you must choose to install, which from microsoft's point of view means it can be placed a more relaxed update/maintenance schedule, at least they didnt pump it full of ads and make you pay for it like solitaire (was)

  • I got really mad when the media creation tool was setting my Edu edition to professional. I was furious when I realised that every edition can be put on to a single 3.8GB Iso, when Microsoft had the audacity to tell me that there was no way to downgrade without an installation media.

Here are some temporary keys to run generalized installs to test… you can do a temp work around for activation by firewalling WUSA.exe. and a few other tweaks

F u MS. thanks for breaking my old laptop.
