Buying a Car from Interstate

Hi all.

I'm wondering if anyone could shed light or any experiences on buying from interstate (Brisbane here).
Any input on the cost dependant on State of course
What if vehicle turns up damaged etc?

We are wanting to buy a Suzuki Kizashi and at the moment it's very slim pickings in Queensland.

Thanks in advance

  • Make sure you check wovs register in both Qld and the state you are buying from. Some cars get written off in Qld, and are then sold and reregistered interstate.

  • New or used? It's fairly simple if it's new car. If it's used how do you test drive the car?

Well every time I've brought a car interstate I've flown to pick it up or driven to pick it up. I'd never buy sight un-seen, it's never as good as they describe or pictures.

      ∆∆∆ this for used cars.

Otherwise next weeks post will be "I bought a used car from interstate and its condition is not like the description, what are my rights?"

      • A friend imported a classic Mercedes from O/S and it arrived in a container in great condition except for the gearbox on the passenger seat.
Since it was a restoration project anyway, it wasn't a disaster, but it reminded me that the gap between payment and delivery can be larger than you would like.

        • except for the gearbox on the passenger seat

Was there something wrong with the gearbox, or was it just in the wrong location? :-)

        • @pjetson:
Not sure, I assumed it wasn't at its best.
I'm reluctant to ask, as he was pretty unhappy, well, he was actually pretty fatalistic, but his wife wasn't very pleased.

  • Maybe go through a car broker? When I was looking, they (the company was called Maxxia, had a corporate deal with them) asked me about interstate cars and i said sure (I didn't end up using them as I was able to get a better deal directly from the dealership)

Bought my car unseen in person but used an inspection agency to give me a full report on the car. They took it for a spin (about 4km or so) to see how it ran, full checks of fluids (oil, etc.).

It was 400AUD at the time but truly comprehensive. Even had follow up call from the mechanic to explain what he thought might be issues with the car in 1 to 3 years time. That gave me some reassurance that the car was in good nick.

Worthwhile investment if you are buying the car second-hand.

If it's the Kizashi, I hope it's the AWD Sport. Very nice car and very comfortable.

Something to note is due to the CVT they're thirsty, expect 10-11L/100 real-world economy.

But certainly something different on the road

    • Spackbace, I've seen a few people talking up the Kizashi.
      Is it really that good?

It was expensive, it was thirsty, it wasn't a big car

But street presence, features (at the time), comfort, drive - definitely a car you wanted to get in every day.

The AWD is actually selectable, so you can drive in 2WD for economy.

Japanese built and you could feel it. The leather was just soft and comfortable.

GMs wife would have them as a drive car, and that was out of anything in the Hokden/Suzuki stable.

On the used car market its really good value for money

It just couldn't compete in a Camry segment, especially at a $30k starting price (up to $42k drive away for the Sport). And not many could pronounce the name lol

        • Hokden

new on the market? it has a nice ring to it. lol

        • @whooah1979:

Lol I was waiting for that

I love the Kizashi, was a definite contender for my last car purchase, ended up with the Levorg

  • Buying a car sight unseen?

Why a Kizashi? I reckon it is a reasonable car, but why so specific?

From your question, it is evident you have very little experience with buying cars and by extension, probably very little knowledge about cars. Not saying that to be mean, rather to get to the this point - if you don't really know much about cars nor about the specific specimen, wouldn't it be wiser to consider another model that you can inspect with a knowledgeable friend?
