    Still too expensive…

  • +11

Not a bargain unless it's 3 months free, free install. That was a good deal :)

    • +2

Especially then with the offer for another 3 months of one package for free (and $10 for HD). Got me through the AFL season last year :-)

  • A little off topic, but if I were to get this installed, and the service was delivered to my home by cable (not a roof mounted satellite dish), does that mean I can get cable internet with Telstra, opposed to ADSL?

If so, is there somewhere online I can check as https://www.telstra.com.au/bundles/check-availability only shows I can get ADSL.

    • should mean it yes - try the live chat

    • As far as I know if you can only get adsl, your only option for foxtel is over the dish.

    • Thanks. Asked via online chat and Foxtel at my address would be by dish, and internet over telephone (ADSL). Maybe I live in a suburb that is anti-Foxtel. Ive been living there for about a year now, and cannot recall seeing a single roof-top mounted dish.

      • -2

and cannot recall seeing a single roof-top mounted dish.

They've changed the look of their satellite dishes to look like possums.

    • +1

Ex Telstra Employee here. If it is saying that you can only get ADSL on the telstra website then you will need a satellite for foxtel. If you can get foxtel through a cable then you can get internet through Cable. If you are 100% sure you can get foxtel through a cable and not satelite, then call up and get them to do a service request on the address as there might be a mismatch for your address in the system.

    • Yes. Telstra broadband not Foxtel broadband.
And If your building has cable and it's not Nbn area.

  • +4

Yeah nice try, but I don't wanna pay my money to a company that can't even get their streaming service to stay online for Game of Thrones.

I mean, jesus. It's the most popular show on the planet. You would've thought Foxtel would take some precautionary measures there.

    • +4

Not only that, but not even available in FHD lol. Fail of a service.

      • +3

Yeah I did the 2 week trial, trying to say I need to pay $35/month jsut to be able to watch one football game a week. I have cable 100mb down and the quality was a bag of dicks. Artifacts all over the screen. They're smoking some serious crack with this joke of a service.

        • -1

It doesn't matter how good your connection is, their streaming quality is 540. Same as normal foxtel. Only get HD on HD channels.

        • +1

          @OnlinePred:
These guys were talking about Foxtel Now, which is 720 streaming. But I was still getting horrible artifacts.

        • @ONEMariachi: I'm talking about Foxtel now. It is not HD (720). HD is only available on PC/Mac or chromecast.

        • @OnlinePred: Yeah, it's available to stream 720hd on PC/Mac/ Chromecast and PS4. Which is exactly what this thread is talking about. What are you trying to argue here?

        • @ONEMariachi: Yep so I stream on my smart TV, and it's 540. I would have to buy a PS4, connect my PC or MAC to my TV to watch it in "HD" lol. Also at no point anywhere in this thread does it mention this thread is only talking about streaming from a PC/MAC/PS4 or chromecast, AND NOT A TV.

Also you can't say a service is HD, when they only offer HD on certain devices.

        • @OnlinePred: or Telstra Tv box.

        • -3

@OnlinePred: You're arguing for the sake of arguing you don't seem to be adding to the conversation at all, jsut stop.

        • -1

          @ONEMariachi: hehe that's funny

  • +1

Use this deal to get the free install

Then when the deal ends, you can call and cancel and negotiate a better deal

Or later on down the track, if you connect, you don't pay install fee etc, and can negotiate a better deal

Basically if you ever have a chance of getting foxtel - use this deal to get the install for free.

    • +3

Or later on down the track

They are already out of date irrelevant dinosaurs. Why would anyone want them in the future?

      • +3

It costs you nothing - it gives you far more flexibility later

As crap as they are, there is no better way to watch AFL

        • +1

          They'd be faaaarked without it

      • +1

        AFL and AFL only
All other streams etc I've seen for AFL are crap

    • Can you do that and then once the contract ends change to Telstra for to get cable internet? In which case you don't have to pay for installation.

  • +4

Keep in mind you'll need to add $10 per month (after the free month) for HD. The standard definition on Foxtel is simply unwatchable, VHS quality.

    • +1

I don't find it unwatchable. It definitely isn't VHS quality.

      • +1

Depends on your tv size, it sure isn't far off with a 50inch+ screen.

        • +1

I have a 55 inch screen… it really isn't that bad. I'm not saying its good, but it isn't that bad.

        • +1

@AnotherRat: Fair enough, each to their own, I find it gross to watch at SD.

        • @AnotherRat:

Treat yourself to HD for a month !

      • +1

        @AnotherRat:

Well VHS maybe a little hyperbolic, but the SD service in my experience (I'm a current subscriber) is far far worse then the lowest bit-rate channels on free to air (with the possible exception of the shopping channel).

My experience is with the sporting channels. That's all I watch. The HD is a crystal clear MP4 service. Chalk and Cheese.

  • Hey Op my in laws have platinum, are they just allowed to give me access details so I can use their go for free? They never use it.

    • yea you can have a few devices

    • But you can only watch that on a device/computer, not a Tv.

  • +1

    Foxtel in 2017 LUL

  • +35

90+ channels repeating the same shit they have done for years and years 5 times a day, filled with ads, then after the first free month of subpar NOT-REALLY-HD-BUT-WE-CHARGE-YOU-EXTRA-FOR-HD content, they will try and justify the fact that it's over $110 a month for this junk.

Keep in mind Foxtel are also the reason we have internet blocking in Australia as they went hard through the courts to get'r'done, I guess the idiots in charge at Fox thought that to help boost subscriber numbers lets attack internet users and have pirate sites blocked which will in turn FORCE THEM to use Foxtel and pay us.

Except that's not how anything works.

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-05-08/foxtel-launches-new-ro…

    great business model Foxtel

Foxtel is never a bargain, not even for free.

    • +1

      I can only upvote once….

      • +1

        I up-voted on your behalf

      • Is that because of the technical limitations or is it how you feel? I see pitufon has upvoted for you but how many do you want? Maybe we can donate until you get the number you feel comfortable with.

    • +1

Keep in mind Foxtel are also the reason we have internet blocking in Australia

      8.8.8.8

  • +10

I can not understand how Foxtel can still charge $10 extra for HD. That shit be complimentary by now in age of 4k

    • They will probably replace it with a 4K fee in a year or two, since their new box and puck will support 4K.

  • +10

A joke of an organisation, if people just woke up and stopped giving money to these imbeciles there would be better options out there.

    • what other option do people have to watch NRL live and not stream live (which is 30 seconds behind live play and doesnt help if you want to do a live punt on the game)??

      • if you want to do a live punt on the game

        Don't? Save your money.

  • +3

Greedy companies like Foxtel should be Banned from Ozb

  • +2

You mean I can have my information sold to third parties AS WELL AS pay for endless repeats of old shows whilst being advertised to???? And the first hit is free? Oh sign me up right now.

  • +1

Anyone who pays full price for any package or the $10 for HD with foxtel needs to hand in their OzB membership.

    • +1

Should be anyone who pays for Foxtel in general.

      • +1

I disagree. Unfortunately the monopoly to show all 9 AFL games means its still a product worth purchasing for many, but not at retail price. Have tried the streaming options in prior years… its simply not as good.

Last year I think I paid ~$50 in total for Feb-September foxtel. This year might be $250 for the same coverage.

For $30/month total cost, its worth it. For the $85/month + Install + Setup, not a chance in hell.

        • I would still do anything possible to not pay them.

          You could sail the seas…

        • So you are getting the standard package plus sports for $30/Month?

        • @AnotherRat:

Averaged out across the 8months, yes. first 3 months plat HD + install free, + extra month plat HD 'as I wasnt sure if I wanted to keep it, so needed a bit more time to assess', then $55/month for Standard + Sports + Drama + HD. 4 or so months of this = ~$250, averaged over 8 months is about $30/month.

As a seperate assessment, WatchAFL (global afl stream to 'sail the seas') with is ~$33 AUD/month. Then you've got VPN cost + streaming live video via VPN isnt always great + cost of it being low on the WAF (wife approval factor - yes, she too is a footy nut, but not a technology nut). Did this a few years ago with Getflix.. it was manageable, but the quality isnt that great.

        • @samfisher5986:

          AAAAARRRR!

  • +12

Enjoying the hate in this thread. Awful company.

    • As I said below, why would anyone willingly give money to Rupert Murdoch, the guy actively and deliberately destroying our country and future? Just to watch some football?

  • +2

good good, let the hate flow through you

  • +1

    I like Foxtel :)
    I also have Netflix.

I prefer watching movies on Foxtel. Can record them. Then when watching can fast forward thru the opening credits. Can also see the cast at the end (which Netflix hides for some reason).

Also News and Business channels on Foxtel are useful.

    • +2

      Hello "Check",

I am here to inform you that your membership to OzBargain has been revoked, you will be required to hand in your card on the way out.

      Have a pleasant day,

      Thank you for choosing OzBargain.

    • +3

Sounds like you don't know how to use Netflix.

      • @PainToad
        So teach me :)
I don't seem to have much control.
(Maybe because I am using a Nexus player…)

  • Foxtel is good 10 times a year when game of thrones is on.

    • Poor resolution/bitrate though.

    • +2

      google go movies

  • Cancelled after having it for 10 years. Over it. Not worth the money anymore. Netflix is king.

    • Kodi is king.

      • +1

Good point. I take back what I said

        1. Kodi
        2. Netflix
        3. FTA sports.
        • +3

          Plex is king

        • @samfisher5986:

Plex involves you to download movies before hand and then to refresh your Plex server to show the movies.

Kodi and a certain extension does not require this :P

        • +1

          @chingy213:

Kodi + streaming means low resolution, buffering, lower availability etc.

Its great if you don't have the content.

Plex set up correctly means Game of Thrones and Ghost in the Shell are avaliable within 10 minutes of release and you can watch it in 1080p the minute you get home from work, or on your phone or tablet in the middle of nowhere.

You can have any movie or tv show you want if you know how.

        • @samfisher5986:

what do you mean "setup correctly" do you have to download a torrent first and then refresh the server?

And are you referring to paid version?

i have plex but i dont use it much. (free version)

        • @chingy213:

Sonarr + Radarr + Usenet = Complete automation, no downloading, sorting or doing anything needed. Automatically appears in Plex for you and your friends.

        • @samfisher5986:

ill google and setup tonight. Thanks :)

        • @chingy213:

Also the "special" plex app for android is free, no plex pass or fee needs to be paid.

        • @samfisher5986: I've had real issues finding GoT on any usenet indexer for this season, the second episode finally came up a day or two after it aired though but nothing on the first episode. Had to resort to 'other' means to acquire it sadly.

        • @Porthos:

You are doing something seriously wrong.

Any real indexer had them straight away.

Perhaps you've done what some people accidently do and use a raw indexer? They are useless.

          PFM/Dog/Geek are what you want.

        • @samfisher5986: I've been using usenet since Internode first started offering it for 'free' many years ago. Haven't bothered signing up for many other sites as plenty have come and gone since the demise of NZBMatrix but neither of the main ones I used had them for the first day and neither did binsearch which usually indexes things the fastest. Maybe I need to sign up for another of these sites but it's just as easy to do a direct download off mega.nz

        • @Porthos:

Binsearch is a raw indexer, its not a real indexer.

          There's your issue.

  • If I'm paying money for the iq3 box do I get to keep it after I terminate my service?

    • Nope.. box remains the property of foxtel - which means the box/smartcard and remote need to be sent back

  • Ahh well. I'll pass on this deal then. Thanks.

  • The only thing foxtel has going for it is live sport. When the live sport that you like is finished (in my case afl) just ring em up and get them to put you in standby mode. When the AFL starts again in 2018 ring up cancellations tell em your not willing to pay anymore that say $45 per month. Usually they'll only give you 4 months at that price. Finals are on FTA by then(apart from a month or so).. rinse and reapeat. But I agree with others in saying that 90% of content on foxtel is trash tv. Depends on viewing habits I guess.

  • Wow, Fetch really has them worried :D

  • +2

I had 2 weeks free trial with foxtel on Telstra TV, now I remember why I stopped watching FTA TV …. The ADS are interminable.. watched a half hour English show and counted 36 ads interspersed through it. Why would anybody pay to watch ADS ???? its beyond me.

  • Foxtel still exists ?

  • I had the same deal installed about a month ago but with no fee at all.
Was told if I don't want it after the 1st month then all is good and I owe nothing and keep the equipment.

Does anyone know if I cancel my service, can I still use/watch the shows I've downloaded to the box?

    • You will find that keeping the equipment incurs a $300 charge to your bank account / credit card.

      • If that's the case, they've flat out lied to me on the phone.
I was definitely told I wouldn't be charged, I even prodded about it because it sounded a bit scammy. But nope, they assured me.

        • Yep, sounds like they lied. If you want to keep the box for FTA channels only, this will cost $10 per month. The box is useless without a subscription.

        • @Marrk: Cheers for your thoughts. Sounds like Foxtel(lies)

  • my father in law had foxtel for ten years. Then his remote control stopped working. He called them to send him a new one. They said it would cost him $50 plus shipping. He cancelled and now has netflix.

  • Wouldn't walk across the road to Watch Foxtel.

    • +2

You'd have to punch me in the face to watch it. And even then..

  • +4

Giving money to Rupert Murdoch, the guy actively and deliberately destroying our country and future?

Oh hey, they show some sort of football, so sign me up.

  • Still too much
