Earning points paying gov related bills (ATO, RMS)

Hi,

So I've got a bill to pay both the ATO and RMS (around $4000 total) and I'd like to "maximise" this payment as much as possible.. soften the "blow" so to speak.

Normally I'd be happy paying on Amex and getting the points.

However, I'm pretty sure the ATO and RMS both do not accept Amex.

Is there another payment method which may be beneficial? Do either normally charge a fee if I use a credit card (I don't have a non-amex one, though I'd get one to get some points)

ATO accepts Amex, although charges a fee for using it.

Also, many cards do not give points on ATO spend; so be sure to read the T&Cs of your card before paying.

I think the Westpac Black Amex now pays 0.325 points per $ for ATO spend… which is not worth it for most people.

Use the search function - there was a thread a few days ago. There's a convoluted way involving wish cards -> visa prepaid cards -> ato website. Should work for RMS too.

Finished up with about 3points per dollar …

IMO, It was too much effort.

    • I'd like to know more about this.. make about $10k in ato payments yearly and 3 points per dollar sure beats 0.5/dollar and Amex fees.

    • This seems like a not too bad idea at all

  • Both ATO and RMS take AMEX but with surcharges on top

  • This thread may get deleted so I'll give a half effort response.
Pay at the Post Office and you will have no fees, but they have a limit so you'll have to go to several post offices to pay off the full bill.
    Forgot what the limit is.

    • I know with the recent council rates, they don't take AMEX but they do allow payment via Auspost. However, on AMEX Explorer you only get 0.5 points per dollar at australia post and other government agencies. However, our council allows you to pay the bill online but through Australia Post. Doing this allows you to use PayPal and you get the full 2 points per dollar :)
