Intel NUC Kit i3 NUC6i3SYH $295.20 (with PLAYER Code) Delivered @ Warehouse1 eBay

Original 20% off Selected eBay sellers PLAYER deal

Intel NUC Kit NUC6i3SYH is about the cheapest I have seen at AU$295.20. It is a slightly taller version of the Intel NUC Kit NUC6i3SYK with the difference being additional space to have a SSD drive as WELL as the M.2 slot.

If I had a choice between the two I would go with this model as it allows you to have the M.2 dedicated to the system and maybe your favourite games and then the SSD for just your pure data like movies, TV shows, photos etc.

Static Ice's cheapest price has this at AU$370 at MSY.

excellent comparison on the product, op..

    • Thanks. Long time lurker but very rare poster. The Skull Canyon (which I got at the 20% eBay sale last June 2016 for $839) is now AU$671.20. Basically an additional 20% off again!

      • Just curious, do you do much gaming or anything with the skull canyon? Curious to know what would be possible with that thunderbolt 3 port on regards to gaming.

        • +1

WOW and Siege are the two main games I have tried with the Skull Canyon. I'm also tempted to get something like the PowerColor Devil eGPU to make it even gruntier but I also have a primary full size rig for my home gaming needs.

The Skull Canyon was more for gaming on the road when I was traveling interstate for work.

  • Does it come with Windows?

    • +2

No. it doesn't even come with a hard drive to install it in. This is a bare bones type kit and you will need to purchase:
      - 1 x M2 or SSD storage
      - DDR4 2133 laptop memory (prob cheap to get now with all the 20% off deals)
      - Windows OS (if you are lucky you can get it for ~AU$15-16.50 with the Microsoft HUP deal)

      Plus the usual peripherals:
      - KB and Mouse
      - Monitor

      • I see, thanks for the info.

      • As far as I know, HUP is only for Office.

        • You are correct. Got my software mixed up. You will need to buy a proper license key for Windows 10 (or whatever) separately.

    • No

  • I always see these devices posted here and I have no idea how they work. Are they like PCs, some sort of servers, or they're to do with gaming?

    • +1

Definitely PCs, maybe fitted to work as "home servers" for your TV (aka HTPC) and some models allow some basic gaming (Skull Canyon for example).

    • +1

Think of them as very small form factor pc. They can only do very light gaming on the higher end models as they cannot have dedicated video cards due to no space/room to put them in.

Typically sold with a soldered on cpu. You supply the ram, ssd and the operating system of your choice.

My wife uses hers for work. She will remote into her office with it or download her work to the NUC and do it offline. She is not a gamer so this suits her really well.

    • +1

mini pc, similar processors to those found in laptops

    • +2

Mini PC that (usually) you can attach to the back of the monitor for a clean and sleek office/workstation. Example.

    • +1

small PCs with no integrated optical drive :p
      …and limited upgrade capabilities.
…that don't come ready to plug-n-play…more like a barebones kit.
…with one of the most useless marketing-wank terms ever: NUC
…that are typically overpriced compared to smallish (but bigger) 'complete' PCs found in your local Big Box store (when you actually take into account what you get…or rather what you don't get with a NUC)

Good for people that like 'small' regardless.
      :)

This is a series 6, the series 7 is much better as it has HDMI 2 which can drive 4K at 60hz.

If you don't want to do that, ever, then no problem.
