Why Isn't Telemarketing Banned

Nobody likes it and everybody avoids it. If someone were to beg for money on the street, they would get in trouble with the law. So how is it any different with telemarketers that call your mobile, and sales people who approach you at shopping centres?

Your analogy is wrong. They aren't being, they are trading. Banning it would be difficult as you would need to define it in black and white terms.

Telemarketing is a spectrum from spam to agreed monthly wine sales.

Is begging illegal? I see it everywhere too.

Do you need two separate threads to cover this topic?

Kinda like cold-calling… Increase your odds of getting a response by increasing the number of times you ask the question…

  • It's like junk mail. There's a tiny proportion of people that like it/participate, so that makes it worth it…otherwise they wouldn't bother.

  • Because sometimes they give you free shit, and everyone loves free shit!

I do love the exceptions it has though.

Government can still call… as can any registered charity.

During elections I still get all the calls.

      • I got a "robo-call" to my mobile from Annastacia Palaszczuk last night. I live in Sydney… (never lived in Qld and haven't visited there in more than 10 yrs. Also I've had my mobile number for more than 10 yrs…)

      i'm on it, still get 3 - 4 a week

      • Inform them you're on the do-not-call register. Ask for their details. File a complaint:

The DNC register does not apply to charitable organisations. If you say you no longer want any calls from them, they are legally obliged to stop calling you, however these orgs outsource their calling to 3rd party call centers and there are numerous.

A good way to stop getting these calls is to block their numbers. I have a small list of them that I block. Feel free to use them in your blocking list.

        • @scrimshaw:

If you try calling a lot of these so called "Australian" numbers, you get a number not in service type message or engaged tone.

Overseas scammers seem to have found a way to get an Aussie number to show up in the caller id.

Like you, I am just noting the numbers as scam on my home phone, so I know not to answer. But I don't answer unknown numbers anyway, let the answering machine do that, and see if they leave a message.

        • @scrimshaw:

I would hope these organizations put some effort into checking the DNC register away. I mean the chance of a sale to someone who's on the DNC register is pretty small, much smaller than someone who isn't on the DNC register, so they're just wasting their time by calling anyway.

The one exception is the Nigerian lottery scammers, who probably have an equal chance of success with people on the DNC register … but I guess they're not exactly law abiding citizens.

        • @scrimshaw: Wrong list! That's a list (partial) of numbers of your girl friends.

Are they Australian callers or Indian Windows Tech Support scammers?

Do Not Call does not cover overseas callers.

Your loss is my gain. I just got a phone call from Prince Mumba Jumba's secretary in Nigeria and I have an inheritance of $1.3 Million dollars waiting for me. Who wouldn't want these phone calls? Targeted Offer, lol.

Your gain is my loss. I have to get a wheel barrow full of iTunes cards to pay my tax.

Wait a minute! I'm supposed to get that money! I already sent my bank details!
