VISA Universal Gift Card Experience?

Hi!

Has anyone had experience using a VISA Universal Gift Card?
I got issued one last year from posting a few reviews on restaurants and have recently tried to use it at stores such as Myer and Coles. Card always seems to get declined (shop assistant has tried all possible ways). I have tried contacting Universal Gift Card in regards to my issue but they seem to just reply with an automated email message.
My balance appears when i log in and card does not expire until 2019.

Would love to hear from anyone!

    Did you activate the card?

How do I activate a card? Why do I have to do this?

Your card must be activated before you can use it. If the letter or pack to which your card was attached asks you to activate your card, please do so on this website or by phoning the number shown on the card within 6 months of receiving the card — or the card may be cancelled. You will need to enter the 16 digit card number and your 4 digit authentication code – sometimes that is the ddmm (day day month month) part of your date of birth. This is a necessary security step – the same as banks do when despatching credit or debit cards through the post. https://universalgiftcard.com.au/faq.aspx#2

    • yes I activated it as soon as I got it :(

  • It was probably a different card, but similar, I had a prepaid gift card - "you pay us $55 cash and we'll give you a plastic card with $50 credit on it"…"oh and that credit will expire within x months" - and it worked fine at some places but not at others.

Like all gift cards they're crap, just marginally less crap than the ones that restrict you to buying for a specific store that you'd never normally shop at.

    • Like all gift cards they're crap

Yep, couldn't agree more. Other than in very limited circumstances, I really don't understand their purpose. Why not just give cash?

      • I really don't understand their purpose.

There's a couple of threads about racking up credit card points, by buying discounted wish cards via cashrewards (using your favourite credit card), then buying a visa prepaid card at woolworths, then using the visa prepaid to pay for utilities/ato/etc (anything that has a high surcharge or low points earn).

I haven't tried it, but it makes sense if it works.

Apart from that, pre-paid cards are a favorite for terrorists and money launders!

        • And the ATO. Or is that just still iTunes cards?

        • @airzone:

          iTunes cards

Since I'm too lazy to Google it, how exactly does that scam work anyway?

So you buy some iTunes cards, give the numbers to the nice man at the Nigerian ATO (you don't send the physical cards) and then what?

How do the scammers extract the cash?

You can't just order a fridge or do a cash advance like with (Visa) gift cards, so what's the deal?

Just resell the codes? Or make fake cards using the scammed codes?

          Buy lots of music?

Buy 'fake' apps for laundering the cash? Apple takes 30%, but eh.

  • they are a disgrace, we have spent over $10,000 on gifts for staff, one staff member , was 12 days late, it was a $500 card. They may it difficult to contact them, and when you find how to contact them, there responses are are slow or not all, we had to ring 3 times and we did not get a returned phone call.We paid for the card ,it was not a reward or redemption, then they came back with this

"Thanks for your patience. Sometimes these queries can take a bit longer as we do need to go back and forth with Visa as well to ensure we cover bases for you.

Visa usually allow a short window on the expiry date before they ‘hard close’ the card [a week or two]. Unfortunately, when you are a few months outside of the expiry, the card has been closed and all funds have been removed and there is no option for us to retrieve and reopen the card for you. I can understand this is a frustrating situation, and we have done everything we can to assist, however, the expiry is clearly marked on the card, and once that short window of time just after the expiry date has passed we are just able to do anything.

Sorry, we are unable to assist this time, we really appreciate your continued business."

It might be legal, but it is immoral and they are fraudsters….

    Continued Business!!!!!! They are joking
