Electricity & Gas Rates through OneBigSwitch

Hi OzBargainers, I am looking to do something about the energy rates hike and heard about OneBigSwitch on tv. Out of curiosity registered myself. Recently got an email from them which shows some major differences between my current tariff and the one they have "negotiated" in a group (as they say). Wanted to know what do the infamous OzBargain Community thinks and whether they can share their own experience on how to do something about this hike.

All rates below before any discount for comparative purposes. Existing Provider has told me that I am not locked in however there will be a disconnection fee applied by the distributor. I call this bulls**t because I can't understand how a distributor will change if both below mentioned retailers (existing and prospective) use the same distributor. Also, apologies for my ignorance as I am new to all of this but I need to know whether I need to inform my existing provider of disconnection or simply register with the new provider and they take care of taking over the connection from my existing provider (similar to porting your Sim card / Mobile number).

Current Provider is EnergyAustralia. Pay On Time Discount Electric=18% and Gas=15%

I can see that the rates are lower on the new offer however supply charges are higher. Discount is significantly higher for electricity.

  • Best way to compare rates is to take your old bills and calculate them again using the rates from the providers. Sometimes the higher supply charges more than offsets the usage rates and sometimes they don't. It depends a lot on your actual usage.

There are also some online comparators where you can enter your usage data and it will calculate which provider is cheapest for your usage profile.

  • Man thats expensive compared to VIC…

  • Note that the early payment discount only applies to the energy you use, not the daily supply charge.

    Beware of any exit fees.

    • I can see that disconnection can be around 40.02 and then re-connection fee again is 40.02 if its the same distributor. Not sure if both would apply if I switch? That would basically kill off the increased benefit over the year… :S

      • I'd err on the side of caution so I'd assume they'd charge both.

You'd have to ask them. And get the answer in writing!

  • +1

Basically your current plan is impossible to compare with any other plan without significant work, as it was designed to be. Avoid any provider with tiered rates in future, they are there to screw you.

I am not locked in however there will be a disconnection fee applied by the distributor

That sounds like BS, I'd report it to ombudsman. Tip for the future is if you feel ripped off ask them to rectify things once, and they won't, then immediately make complaints to the ombudsman as this is the only way to get things resolved. Do not play the game of talking about it to get it resolved, the script to waste your time is already written. They act like criminal scum most of the time.

I hope you choose to vote on this issue - and that means not voting for Liberal or Labour since they both delivered this terrible system with highest prices in the world to make their friends rich at your expense.

  • No time of use plans?

  • Also a headsup for Queenslanders (and maybe others)that if you do change from Ergon (and possibly energex) you will NOT be able to change back to them in the future. If you are building a new house make sure your builder hooks you up to Ergon/Energex from the start or you will not be able to change later. This is the dodgy governments way of forcing people into privatisation AFAICT. Not sure on the rules in other states.

  • Just a final update to all my fellow ozbargainers. First of all thanks for the advise.

I worked out my bills between the two providers using their tariffs and found that the level of usage i have would not cause alot of difference due to the little difference in cents per unit. The major difference however was being caused by the usage discount therefore I decided to call up my existing provider and asked to speak with the retention team. Informed them about Alinta Energy's offer. They said they can't do anything on the tariffs however they were able to match the usage discount in the case of Electricity to 30% and beat the discount incase of Gas by addtional 2% to 20%.

I encourage all of my Ozbargainer fellows to pick up the phone and speak with your providers if you are getting a discount of any less than the above percentages. Ask them to beat the discount and refer to OneBigSwitch and Alinta Energy. It doesn't hurt to try.

  • Alinta are dodgy and they don't give the discount if you have solar.
