How does this rice taste like? Any softer than the sunrice medium grain (red bag). To me the sunrice long grain (green bag) is not edible.

The first time I tried it, I noticed a difference, but it didn't take long to get used to and I think it's great now and heaps better for you as apparently it is low GI.

basmati is meant to be a better quality of rice

      • Yes, but we all have different preferences. Haven't tried this one before, not sure if I should stock some up when the deal starts.

    • Basmati is the best rice and the most expensive. For me compare to sunrice medium grain and sunrice long grain, Basmati is 10 time more better.

      • +3

It is certainly not the best rice, since it is not brown. Brown is the best rice, has the best nutrients that your body needs. Anything else is almost like white bread.

Anything else is almost like white bread

Not quite dude, google "glycemic index"! ;)

FWIW, I do agree with you that brown rice is certainly the best for you; why not have the best of both worlds, did you know you can get basmati brown rice! ;)

I'm a rice purist though, when I'm eating Indian, I want basmati; for Thai it's gotta be good Thai jasmine (I miss Kamarathong - but Lion brand's ok) or sticky rice; for Chinese it's medium grain (Sunrice is good); for Japanese I don't mind either of the latter two (actually, jasmine makes excellent sushi which will store really well too)! :)

          • +3

@StewBalls: Everything sounds good but are you serious about jasmine rice for sushi..? I didn't expect that coming from a "rice purist" :O~

            • @omygodde: Yep, would never have believed it myself; but I've got a friend who runs a sushi franchise, she uses the Japanese rice for the customers coz leftovers get tossed; but makes her own personal stuff outta jasmine, tastes great to me and it refrigerates way better! ;)

The deal is, all the different rice grains have different properties in their starches, that's why basmati can be white but still low GI; and some tolerate storage after cooking without moisture loss better (eg. jasmine)! Remember too, once you stir the sushi rice seasoning thru, that's gonna overpower the jasmine fragrance! :)

FWIW, I rarely eat sushi myself, I kinda like it but I feel like I've swallowed a bag of cement afterward! :p

    • my dad likes to eat it but i reckon it smells bad

I made couple of months ago Indian dish called Chicken Biryani and for that Basmati rice is the best. You can find how to make Chicken Biryani on youtube.

Thats even cheaper to buy from an Indian store. Love that taste. I reckon, basmati is the best tasting rice. Usually use India Gate premium which is usually about 10-12 bucks for 5kg pack.

    • Yep, love Basmati. Just bought a bulk 25KG pack for $40. Coles is cheaper and in smaller easy to store quantities!

  • is it going to be available in vic? or its nsw only?

    • Its VIC as well Dave1

      • Thanks dirtybird!

My local coles is in an Indian populated suburb, I'm sure the Indians, who love their deals, will have the shelves wiped out within 5 minutes!

So? Just walk up to the service counter and get a raincheck. They do this all the time.

      • Can you?
I know it doesn't say "no raincheck", however it indicates "while stocks last", do they have similar meanings in this case?

    • Clayton? :P

      • haha, nice, north of the border I was thinking Parramatta or more likely, Liverpool :D

  • I hate when I make basmati at home, dont like the flavour. But the indian restaurants do it so well.. and that yellow rice they make is awesome.

I mostly stick to Jasmine rice now, i like it cause it sticks together and nice flavour.

Grab yourself some saffron threads nubz & steep them in some hot water for a at least an hour, then add that to your rice cooking water! ;)

Agree, India Gate Basmati is the best, but this price is good.

For all you people who think rice is rice, or cant work out how to cook it properly, this will convince you:-
    1. 1 cup rice in saucepan with 2 tb of oil oil. (stir continuously for 3 mins medium heat)
    2. Add 1.5 cups salted water, bring to boil (high heat)
    3. Put lid on
    4. Once boiled, turn heat down to minimum (if gas, the tiniest flame possible without going out)
    5. Wait exactly 20 mins
    6. Turn off heat, add 2 tb butter and stir
    7. Wait 5 mins, stir and serve.

    Best rice ever

I agree with you, India Gate makes the best Basmati but at this price, Maharajah cant be beat. Good instructions for stove top, but for those who find that method too cumbersome and prefer using the automatic rice cooker, let me tell you a trick my mum taught me - always put half a cup extra water. So if you are cooking 1 cup rice, pour in water till the 1.5 cup mark, not the 1 cup mark - perfect basmati every time. I used to think that was only specific to our rice cooker at home, but I have tried this at a number of places with brilliant results.

      • I was taught this as well, perfect jasmine rice everytime too :)

    • I pretty much do it like this, but not that much oil (are you sure you mean tablespoons?) and no butter. I use 2 to 1, water to rice. 15 mins.

Don't worry if you burn it a bit in step 1, it tastes ok still (pretend it's wild rice).

have you heard of a thing called rice cooker? lol its cheap only 20 bucks and saves you heaps of time and trouble

What 50% of Basmati rice….WOW LETS ALL GO OUT AND GRAB SOME lol

  • We have our fair share of Indians here in Hornsby - suspect it won't last long on the shelves here….

Wish there were more Filipinas here :)

  • Pressure Cooker - Best way to cook rice :)

    • Care to enlighten us on the process?

I personally use a Tiger rice cooker, its amazing, it also steams and cooks casseroles. It has settings for all types of rice ie white, brown etc

    • Jeez, you'd wanna be quick or it'd turn to slush! :o

  • I don't mean to completely hijack this thread, but does anyone know what's on special this coming week (apart from this page)? I think the junk mail delivery boys didn't come around coz of the storm…I'd really like to know!

    • Just check out the coles web page CJ, they've got an online cattledog! ;)

  • thx a lot :)

Got some from Broadway NSW. NB that it wasn't on the rice shelf. It was on a aisle-end display separate from all the other rice. Rather "aisle-mid" display, since the aisle length is divided into 2 and it was along the middle division.

    Hopefully this is not confusing.

    • I can confirm the same at Indooroopilly QLD. It was in the same aisle as the rice and pasta, but at the end away from the cashiers… It was kinda easy to miss actually, certainly marketed differently from the usual 1/2 price sales! Not complaining because now I can treat myself to basmati, yumptious… There was a fair amount still around but who knows how long it'll hang around for.

  • Bought 2x5kg today @ Liverpool Westfield

  • Sold out @ Westfield Innaloo, WA. Not sure if they'll be getting any more. :(

    • HEAPS left at Coles Edgeworth (Hunter-NSW) yesterday evening if that helps anyone! They had tons of the jute 20kg bags (4x 5kg) on the end of an aisle! ;)

  • Anyone know where this rice is made in? Hope it is genuine from India.

    • FWIW, we grow excellent rice here in Australia; we export it in fact; there would be nothing wrong with it being locally produced! ;)

      • Unfortunately a large proportion of the rice grown in Australia relies heavily on drawing water from the strained Murray-Darling river system. Although Aussie farmers apparently use 50% less water than the world average (http://www.urbanecology.org.au/topics/waterforrice.html) it's still a crop that's really too water intensive for the climate across most of Australia (at about 1000L per kg).

        • Very good point, and great info; but I wasn't commenting on sustainability, merely quality! ;)

I wouldn't give Coles any credit here, the savings are coming directly from the suppliers pocket.

  • Can't find rice stock in 2 NSW coles, Engadine & Southgate - there was no obvious gap in the rice shelf, and staff didn't know where abouts it was - assuming it was an end display, as I couldn't see it - and they were also sold out of butter chicken sauce, and the chapatis… grrr! Least impressive Indian-themed specials ever by Coles, seeing as there doesn't seem to be much/any stock of the specials they advertised. So as a consolation prize I picked up some freebie boost bars using the wrapper hack instead :-)

  • Excellent price. Bought 25 bags. Got some funny looks in Coles.

    • 25 bags? You're nuts man!
