Is WD better than Seagate Backup plus which is similarly priced

    https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Backup-Portable-External-STDR…

    • Take a look at BackBlaze's reliability numbers.

TL:DR; but Hitachi if you can afford it, otherwise WD, then Seagate.

So you're basing this on an article written 3.5 years ago with desktop drives as samples. Nice.

Have you got a better one you read which you would like to share?

        • +3

@lovepub: No I don't but then I also didn't claim one device is better than the other. It's a moot point when you reference a dated article, or one that is based on a different product (3.5" vs 2.5" drives).

I'd be inclined to buy this (orange) one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LQQHBW6/ref=s9_acsd_top…

or maybe the red or yellow ;)
I have one in white from a past deal.

    • Yeah, that's a better deal, only a couple of dollars more than the lowest ever price on CamelCamelCamel.

The My Passport drives are perceived to be a "higher end" drive than the Elements, even though the Amazon list price is lower (whether this is true or not is another matter).

      • The black My Passport is listed at $160, its only the orange that is so low (for some reason)

    • That's a great deal!

    • Yeah Passport has password protection with hardware encryption and 3yr vs 2yr warranty.

    • Since this is better and cheaper…it deserves a post on it's own I recon.
I am buying this one too as most people believe it's higher end

  • pull them apart for cheap server storage for the home lab 2.5" drive bays…

      exactly :-)

      • +1

Especially when you consider the $/TB ratio isn't much different to big 3.5" drives.

    • +1

Are these a standard 2.5" sata drive inside? I thought many were hardwired for usb3 only?

      • +2

correct, all 2.5" drives have been direct USB connection for years now

        • +2

so basically for all modern USB portable drives, one can't simply take out the enclosure and use the hard drive as internal laptop hard drive?

        • +2

          @totaro:

All 2.5 WD drives are probably direct USB.

Not sure about all the various Seagate models. There might be older models still floating around.

        • the ones I have (western digital 4TB and some seagate) are the same internal 2.5" drives you buy from MSY but cheaper,
they have a small sata to usb board, just make sure you only use low power drives on these converters, my laptop was not happy when I tried a more power hungry drive…

  • Will it work with xbox one s?

  • Got one. Thanks
