Nexus 4 Dying Any Ideas? Or Recommend A Phone Up To $4-500 Please

So my Google Nexus 4 that I bought years ago from a deal on here has started randomly dying all the time. It used to shut down occasionally, but now it does it really often. When it does it makes a weird noise almost like when old hard drives used to die. When I turn it on again it optimizes apps before it boots again which takes more than 30 mins. I've noticed that my phone signal disappears along with wifi often before it crashes. Also using Youtube can kill it.

I'd like to keep using it if I can, but it's probably time to let it die.

So if I have to replace it can I have some recommendations on a new phone please, as I know nothing about them.

My requirements is to be an Android phone, have expandable memory, as the Nexus pissed me off not utilising SD cards. Also a good camera would be nice. And also be fast. Extra points if it's waterproof, but that's probably pushing it in this price range.

I look forward to everyone's input!

lg g6 is in that range, and meets all your criteria

  • Samsung S7 fits the bill. Good camera, SD card slot, there's even a dual SIM variant you could buy, but this costs more than $500.

As for waterproof feature capabilities are probably a little… overstated?

    • I'd even say an S5 to save some money, not sure how speed would compare to the Nexus 4

no one ever said it was water proof. It is only water resistant

    • S7 is the best IMHO, a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. If you are buying on eBay, watch out for refurb models that are sold as new.

The Xiaomi Mi5 and Mi5s can be had for around $300 new for the 64GB version, and are almost as good as the S7 at lower price point and weight.

    Removable battery?
    Get the Samsung Note 4.

    Decent spec, and community support?
    Get the ZTE Axon 7.

    Want something new and shiny?
    LG G6 if you can.

Recommend A Phone Up To $4-500 Please

Yes I too would like to buy a $4 phone

    • Why not a -$496 phone? I would consider an iPhone if I was being paid almost $500 to take it.

    Xiaomi MI 5 plus

Xiaomi mi6 - not expandable memory, but it's a great phone.
Can be had for $500 on sale (64gb).

    Loving mine.

  • Motorola G5 Plus. Definitely would not go for LG, my nexus 5x didn't even last a year before it start LG (Looping for Good)

    • This!

I went from a LG G4 to this and love it.

It doesn't have a great camera but it's not crap though. Ok the front facing is fairly potato.

But NFC, awesome battery, nice screen, the fingerprint reader is great and if you look around can get it <400 for the 32GB model.

  • I was in exactly the same boat as you recently. Bought a Nexus 4 in 2013 after seeing a deal on here. About 12 months ago the phone started randomly shutting off and battery life reduced dramatically (down to 8 - 12 hours). Bought a replacement battery for $20 from ebay. Unfortunately this did not help at all.

So it was time to buy a new phone. The Moto G5/G5+ looked like a good replacement (equivalent level/price to the Nexus 4 back in the day) and was just about to come out. Could have bought the G4+ but held off until the G5+ came out and a deal popped up on here. I've now had it for a month and am very happy with it. It's a bit bigger than the Nexus 4 but not too big. Just fits in my pocket so I wouldn't want anything bigger. Super fast. Has NFC which is handy. Much better camera than the Nexus 4. Very impressive battery life (gets me 2 to 3 days between recharges after moderate use). So far so good. The only thing missing is a compass which I would have liked.

    • Same story here. Major pain in the ass. There where things that helped, like keeping it attached to power, so one potential fix was to attach it to a power bank but who wants to do that forever. Was also looking at rooting it in an attempt to fix it, but decided it wasn't worth the hassle

  • S6 Edge + for under $400.

  • I moved from a Nexus4 to a Nexus5x. Love it.

    • Be careful of the dreaded bootloop…

It's happened to me too, since I had Nexus 5x before I had an S5. LG did repaired it for me though, but since the phone is on it's way out, you may not get motherboard replacements for it down the road…

      • I really liked my Nexus 4, but am worried about getting another Nexus as my one has always had issues of randomly dying. Now it dies pretty much every time I switch it on.

  • Had the same thing happen to mine. Sold it for $60 to someone who just wanted NFC, and switched to a Huawei y6 elite while I wait for the Xiaomi Mi5 to come down in price

    • How far down in price are you waiting for?

      • I dunno. It seemed like when the Mi6 came out we might see some discounts, but so far the price has been pretty steady

  • Thanks for the input all. I'll try and decide between the Motorola Moto G5S Plus and the Xiaomi Mi5s. The Mi5sPlus would be nice as I'd like a large screen actually, but too dear I think.

  • LG G6. It's essentially the "Nexus 5" 2.

    • I'm worried about boot loop issues etc though
