TIL My closest Caltex servo has: "Honk For Assistance" woohoo!

  • +8

Accepted at participating locations only. Visit www.caltex.com.au/find-a-caltex, enter your location and select 'StarCash Digital' using the filter

Watch out for this one. A couple of servos I use don't participate.

  • +16

Last time I used this, the attendant allowed me to prepay. So go into the servo, prepay for the petrol and he'll program the pump to stop exactly where you need it.

Saves you from spending 15$ worth of fuel only to find out the servo doesn't accept the voucher.

    • That's an awesome tip. Thanks!

  • +3

Hm damn can't buy it as I bought it from a previous deal.

    • +2

I believe you have other email right?

      • +6

I believe so too but I used that in the previous deal too :) hahaha

        • You don't need a real email, you just gift yourself ;)

        • @doweyy:

yes it is true, you can also refer your unreal email?

        • @doweyy: Whoa what really? Hm maybe I'll try that!

edit: Did you mean "Give as gift"? Just tried it and it doesn't work :( same error message

        • +1

          @illumination:

Yep! Also you can just use gmail and put +1,2,3.. etc after your prefix and it'll send the voucher back to your original account :) Also you can just go "View Voucher" on your dummy email groupon account and register the security code.

        • @doweyy:
Give as gift doesn't work for me for some reason,….. it still says I have exceeded the maximum amount.

        • @tidie:

You have to make a new account with a throwaway email and then send it to you as a gift.

        • @doweyy: Oohhhhh I see what you're saying now.

So you still need to make a new account but by giving it as a gift you have it all together (in your own email)!

        • @illumination:

          Yep, you got it!

        • @doweyy: but it still sends it to that fake email you made up on groupon, and if that person uses it, then there goes your $15 bucks lol.

        • @Inflow:

What do you mean? You go into gmail and make an account then use that at groupon, nobody else owns the account so not sure what you mean.

        • @doweyy: nvm, thought of something better. Just use non existing accounts. e.g [email protected]

      • Sooo.. How many are you guys buying? ;) Practically can be "unlimited" right..

        • +2

          If you are a millionaire

  • Is it possible to buy more than 20$ then split = voucher + extra money ?

    • +2

      Yes

  • Tempted, though my 3 Caltex's within a 15 minute drive are all a bit pricey, not at bad as Shell but consistently higher than 7-Eleven where I save the most using their phone app.

I have a woolies caltex which is always the cheapest but I'm assuming they probably don't take this? Or might they?

Seems a bit hit and miss, I'll stick with my 7-Eleven. I price match to the servo 15 minutes from home and fill up at the one 2 minutes from home, it's just too good once you've used it a few times. Saved myself 30c/L recently.

    • Pretty sure Woolies Caltex do not take this.

      • Thanks for confirming. That's a no deal for me then, the $20 for $15 doesn't warrant paying extra and driving further to get it. Just my situation.

        • Fair enough.

I'm somewhat similar. I have a Woolies/Caltex near me which is consistently cheap, but I pass enough standard Caltex's which accept this for this to be worthwhile. At the bottom of the cycle, 25% off a normal Caltex without 4c/L discount is still cheaper than 5% (eGift Cards) with 4c/L discount.

        • +1

          @illumination:

True. I just did some crude maths and it would be cheaper buying this than using 7-Eleven, even at the more expensive Caltex's I'd probably be ~5c/L better off. That said there's an inconvenience driving out of my way (I don't naturally drive past any) so I'm probably still going to give it a miss. It could be a ripper of a deal for someone passing a cheap Caltex though!

EDIT: Yes I'd save 5c/L on 98, 4c/L on 95 and and 1c/L on 91 at my nearest Caltex. It's tempting for the higher octane fuels.

      • ? A couple of Woolies Caltex servos appeared in my results, after the filter.

        • Is there a way to check online which ones will accept? Coz my caltex is $0.36 more expensive than the Woolworths Caltex. If the latter takes these cards then it's a no brainer. My local woolies is 100.7 (E10), 103.7 for 91 etc.

EDIT: Nevermind, it's amazing what happens when I read (http://www.caltex.com.au/find-a-caltex)

        • @Click_It: Follow the instructions: Visit www.caltex.com.au/find-a-caltex, enter your location and select 'StarCash Digital' using the filter (on the top right of the resulting map).

        • @greenpossum:

Thanks. My Woolworths Caltex don't accept it BUT… I'm an idiot and forgot there's another Caltex a few driveways down who price match that servo. So I'm in luck! 77.8c/L for 91 here I come.

        • +1

          @Click_It:

Wait… Price matching fuel? I have never heard of this in my life!

.. Unless you simply mean they often have a listed price matching the other one due to competition!

        • @illumination: yeah sorry, there's a stretch of road about 300m long with 4 all bunched up. 3 of then compete and then shell does their own thing (+25c). Not a price match, I was rushing to close the laptop and leave work early :)

  • Automatically goes to your Stocard app for use, very handy. Thanks OP

    • I find these come up better in the WalletPasses app. Tried Stocard but it doesn't show balances whereas this does.
.. but having said that, I know I've used 2 out of 3, yet WalletPasses still shows full balance of $20 as if I had never used it.

      • Yeah takes a few days to update, you can manually delete them though.

        • Hm it's been more than a few days and my balances still show $20. I can also see it was last updated on June 20 but I can't see anyway to trigger a manual refresh… any idea how this can be done?

  • +1

Is it possible to redeem this for Opal credit in NSW?

    • I'd be interested about this too. Not likely though, it would probably come under the telco/mobile/gift cards/recharges category that always seems to be excluded..

  • WARNING Don't do it I bought one last time and the voucher never worked. Have emailed Groupon several times however they never get back to me.

    • worked for me

    • +2

      Worked for me too.

Not saying you're lying but you'll probably need to include a little bit more info as to why it didn't work for you, because my suspicion is that you went to a non participating servo (in which case it's technically your fault).

      • I went to a participating servo in fact I have tried 3 of them. There must be something wrong with the voucher. I understand this sought of thing can happen however groupon are arseholes to deal with. They never return your emails, and when I have phoned they hang up on you. I would never buy anything through Groupon again and warn others to also not use them.

    • Mine did not work, but only at the start - took few days to 'activate' I believe.

  • Groupon refunded my purchase of these cards last time.

  • The link above to find Caltex did not work actually as it show Woolworths Caltex as well.
    Misleading.

  • +2

Forgive me if this has already been asked (and apologies for the seemingly dumb question) but does this have to be used on fuel?? Or can it be used for… in store purchases?

    Cheers

  • Only for people who haven't bought this before? Says I've reached my limit

  • I keep winning them but United sells fuel so much cheaper

    • Sell them to people who have really shonky people running their nearest United?? (aka me :P)

    • Yeah, but this is essentially 25% discount. United usually sells their fuels 10c cheaper than Caltex-Woolies sells, which is equal to 10% difference.

      • Some people do not have access to a United in the same way they do to a Caltex…
Wait if its only 10% different from Caltex to united, and 25% difference Caltex card to no card, why not go to Caltex to get 15% off? Am I missing something??

      • +1

The other benefit here is this Groupon avoids the Amex Credit Card surcharge by my local Caltex.

  • Just bought it. Thanks for posting. Only problem is not all caltex service stations accept digital cards. Need to find a one that accept digital cards from Caltex website.

  • Why on earth I can't buy at all? Say exceed maximum limit when I never bought before

    • exceed maximum limit when I never bought before

  • If I click the direct link I can find the deal, but going through Cash Reward link, it doesnt appear when you manually search

    • +1

You won't get cashback for this kind of digital card purchase.

  • Dumb questions here:

Do I do the redeeming process in store? Or Do I use that link to redeem before hand?

And do I swipe a card on the eftpos machine? I thought it was a digital card…

    • Have the QR code ready before payment, tell the servo you wanna pay by digital gift card they will ask you to point the QR code at the scanner thingy.

  • does the full amount need to be used with a single transaction?

    • No

      • thanks, also possible to do split transactions with digital card and something else?

        • Why not? If you don't have enough balance on the card then pay the rest buy any other form of payment you wish.

  • So for example if I fill up a full tank of petrol for $50 and I buy 3 of these starcash cards, could I use all 3 of them at once?

  • +1

Does the 25% discount just get taken from the underpaid Caltex worker's wages?

    • Then you should audit their payroll before pumping or even check if Caltex imported fuel from foreign companies that underpay their employees.

  • On purchase: There was a problem submitting your order. You have exceeded the purchase limit for this deal.
Seems like this is the same deal as https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/314039 which I purchased almost 2 months ago.

    • Yep, apparently you're allowed one purchase of this voucher per account.

I bought one 3 years ago, and couldn't buy another one with that account.

  • Thanks to OP and previous posts. A total of 25 cards till date and theoretical savings of $125. Already used 11 out of them.

It beats me, why Groupon should restrict the purchase to one per account forcing us to open so many dubious accounts.

    • Groupon is not the one restricting it. The vendor is.

    So.. You save $5. Congratulations.

    • +2

$5 can buy you 10 maccas cones
$5 can buy you 5 hamburgers
$5 can buy you Peckish Rice Crackers 100g
$5 can buy you 8 voss water
$5 can buy you a lot of things…

    • Very unOzBargain of you. This deal is effectively 25% off Caltex petrol for the rest of the year.

  • My local Wool/Caltex accepts StarCash Digital. So can they just scan the bar code and it will deduct itself? Is that how I use it?

    • yes. I use the passes app on my android

      • ty

  • Bought a few of these. Noticed that some Woolworths Caltexs accept Starcash Digital however if you're hoping to get reward points with these, forget it. If you look into Woolworths Rewards @ Caltex you see that they exclude purchases made with Starcash, meaning no points earned. Still good value to use at your local caltex that accepts Starcash though, and they all go into Apple Wallet (with balance remaining showing) if you have an iPhone. :)

  • Out of stock :(

  • SOLD OUT - OP Please update the deal. thanks.

  • Out of stock :(

  • +6

Back in stock for those following.

  • Claimed, thanks.

  • Used the voucher last night. Initially had issues as the attendant didn't know what to do, then no probs as their colleague helped them out.

The problem seemed to be the attendant trying to redeem a bar code on their POS machine but it had to be selected as a QR code from their side. The funny side was the initial attendant having no idea what a e-star card was, whilst all around them hung promo material for e-star cards. A little training/info from head office wouldn't hurt

    • Same story for me today. Attendant had no idea how to process on their console. Knew nothing whatsoever about starcash. No-one there to supervise them. Ended up having to pay cash.

I have used starcash at this outlet before so just total lack of training.

      • After 5 failed attempts, attendant opened his operations manual folder. Problem solved. Get them to do this instead of paying with cash.

        • Only 1 attendant and a line of customers behind me. Sent a complaint to Caltex instead on failure to train staff

  • It doesn't let me buy using my Groupon account may be as I already bought in June I guess. Is it 'once only in lifetime' offer?

    • +1

Sure you can live a double life by creating another email address and Groupon account

  • got a few more … this is lots better than 4c fuel discount voucher.

  • Guys did anyone noticed
The pump which allows to use this voucher has $0.20 higher price on petrol then the pump which doesnt accept the deal?
I noticed on the same day 2 different caltex 1 in Marrylands had around 152 for Premium where as in Parramatta same fuel for 125 ??
so it works out no discount after all
Also Merrylands pump had sticker saying "No Supermarket Discount vouchers"

  • I just tried it at mount druitt and it kept on saying scan failed and customer is not eligible.

    What has gone wrong here?
