How Common Are eBay Fakes Nowadays?

Hey just want to get an interesting discussion and story telling going

So eBay has been around for a while now and it has come a long way from an auction site to a full fledged storefront

I remember back in the day a lot of people were afraid to buy from eBay as they were afraid of getting a fake product

In recent times this skepticism has died down considerably with people more concerned about warranties offered by the seller

But I was just curious has anyone recently had any experience with receiving a fake item from eBay that was listed as genuine (ie watches, designer brands etc)

and if so what happened, was the situation remedied?

I bought perfume recently. I wasn't convinced it was the real thing. Fortunately they gave me a full refund. I gave neutral feedback.

There's a ton of fake video card listings … too good to be true price, 0 or less rating. And people are buying them in great numbers.

If you type in a popular trending cosmetic, the first 1000 listings from China and even Aussie sellers are fakes. Unless the eBay store is a reputable store and has its on own website eg. Myer. I think many people who buy probably don't even realise it's fake.

  • If the price is too good to be true, then it's likely to be fake!

Although sometimes you can get some pretty good deals!

At a guess, (at least)90% of brand name products sold out of China are counterfeit.

We are an authorised distributor for a USA manufacturer of a product of which we sell through our EBay store. We see numerous listings by Australian sellers for a particular size of the product that is not even made by the manufacturers of the genuine product. These items have been sourced out of China and the packaging does not even have key identifying marks.

If is amazing the number of sales recorded for the fakes - people think they are getting a bargain.

I have pointed out the listings for the counterfeit items to EBay but they really don't care and do nothing to remove the listings.

  • I've had things sent from different countries from the one they said they were coming from..So, I bought something in Australia and said it was Australian stock but then it turns out it was coming from some place in China…I thought it just got lost in the mail after 3 months. Was annoyed as expected. Got a refund. And when the item turned up it was horrible.

All the Chinese sellers has put me off using eBay tbh..Saying it's stock in Australia when it's not…The above isn't the first time it's happened. Now, I will shop elsewhere before even considering eBay.

  • Clothing, fashion + cosmestics, electronics (such as expensive audiophile equipment, USB drives) and computer software are amongst the top 'fake' products on ebay.

Very hard to police due to the sheer volume of products sold on ebay and you would need a very large team of humans to verify if a seller is selling fake goods. Unfortunately humans need to be paid wages so a lot of the processes are automated, they simply flag sellers who receive an abnormal amount of reports and then they decide if a seller is shonky or not.

If you want to protect yourself, you can choose to only buy from trusted sellers (i.e franchises or stores that have a local presence).

  • I bought a pair of BT earphones and when I got them they were obviously fake. The seller had 99.8+% feedback and all the images on the product page were of the authentic earphones. Ebay forced me to pay return shipping to get my money back , even though I provided multiple images proving they were fakes, and I couldn't even leave feedback.

For future reference make sure you make your payment for goods using paypal. If you do this paypal has a returns policy where it covers the first $45 of postage for your purchases. You will need to register for this feature and details can be found here https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/returns

EBay is loaded with fakes, especially brand name clothing lines and as others have said if the price is too good to be true and it's being sent from China then it's most likely fake. They do shut down lots of Chinese sellers however they just start up again because it can be hard to verify sellers. That's why Amazon is so popular as their proceedures for selling real items is so much more stringent. On eBay you can have multiple listings of a product and if you have a few complaints eBay is ok about that. On Amazon a brand name product will have only one listing for that product. So you can't have 100 listings for a Louis Vuitton bag. If you put a fake up at a low price then it's going to be easy to spot as your item will likely end up at the front of the listing. Pretty soon you end up with lots of sales and lots of complaints as buyers also provide feedback or the original manufacturer files copyright complaint against you and you end up being banned for life from selling on Amazon. That's one of the reasons why Amazon is so popular in the States as you're less likely to end up with a fake than on eBay.

I did use paypal but didn't know this was a feature, thanks for the information.

I'm too suspicious to risk it.

    • What are you buying that is such a concern?

  • The funny thing is they crackdown on the small sellers selling fake/counterfeits but the huge sellers are left untouched.

  • Was about to post a topic on this but here is a

BenQ XR3501 35" LED Curved Ultra Wide Gaming Monitor for $60 delivered

    • 0 Feedback as seller and people still buy it… they deserved to get ripped off

      • It says false66 with a slight jumble. They deserve it so hard.

    • $60 delivered from Germany?!?!

    • awww…the listing got removed…

      • Sad. Seemed like a good deal.

  • Lots of fakes on ebay, but usually trivially easy to spot.
If you want genuine brand name buy from Myer or DJs (remember, even Target got scammed with fakes!).

My problem is the opposite. I want to buy cheap sunglasses/clothes/leathergoods etc. and would be happy with the higher quality fakes if they just produced the items without the trademarks logos.
I will pay more for a good rayban copy WITH NO RAYBAN LOGO than I will for a fake. Same with luggage, clothes etc. I have bought really good quality business shirts in asia with a polo logo for under $10 each. I would have paid $15 or $20 if they were blank.

    • I will pay more for a good rayban copy WITH NO RAYBAN LOGO than I will for a fake.

      wayfarer or aviator?

  • I bought a down jacket from china for $60ish delivered.
I wanted a a heap down jacket that I will not be afraid to get trashed.

It arrived looking like another The Northface down jacket that I have. I reallly could not tell the difference. It was not sold as TNF jacket and the pictures didnt look much like a TNF jacket either.

The only problem was the cut. I got the large as advised on the listing but the shoulders was still a little small so the sleeves a little short. but otherwise I was happy with my $60 fake TNF jacket

    • How was it quality wise

      • was good. If I had to guess, I think the down might be different. But thats it just a guess.

  • I bought an iRing and then discovered it was fake after it became loose and contacting Aauxx. Apparently they are all fakes on ebay and there are also no legit resellers in Australia. There is even an au page who claims they're real but they just import cheap knockoffs. I just wanted a genuine iRing!

  • I bought a BT heart rate sensor from HK seller on ebay. It was a big brand sensor (Polar H10) the price was very good, however, not "too good to be true". I was a bit concerned, but received a genuine product.
