Isuzu MU-X vs Toyota Fortuner

Hi I'm looking to get either the mux or Fortuner.

Looking at the GX in the fortuner or the Ls-m in Isuzu. Both cars seem relatively evenly matched. The Isuzu comes with 5 year warranty while the Toyota only 3. Both have capped price service.

the mux is about 44 and fortuner is 46, that's without negotiating. I want to spend no more than 40k mark

Has anyone got a MuX or fortuner. Have you have any issues? What is the best price anyone has got for a new one.

  • I doubt your going to be able to negotiate more than 10% on a new Toyota. Have you looked at ex demos, or second hand with under 10,000km?

    • Yeah I'm keeping my eye out for ex demo and second hand. Not much out there, that is worth getting. Second hand they are almost the price of new with 20k+ on clock.

why these two? are you 4wding?

I need something that can tow as I have a camper trailer and my current petrol car really struggles. So I am opting for a diesel for the fuel economy instead of buy a 6 cylinder petrol. I don't really go proper 4WD, but I ocassionaly need the AWD to get me out of muddy places

Plus having the 4wd, will mean I'll have the option of going into better camping spots

      • I have a camper trailer

how heavy is your trailer and how much cargo are you carrying?

        • It's about 1 tonne fully loaded, if I add a water tank to it will add another 100kg. My current car is rated to tow 1.6 ton, which is fine on flat, but uphill and into my steep driveway it has stalled.

        • @Bargainkappa:

Oh wow no way do you need something that will pull 3T for that.

Get something with 2-2.5T towing, no CVT and more features.

I agree I don't need such a big diesel, but there isn't choice for something that is also a 4WD and known to be reliable

        • @Bargainkappa:

so under 2t. we would skip both and go with used lc150 or a lc120. these have proven themselves with four generations since 1985.

          see spackbace's post.

  • Fortuner had a price drop a few months back, hence why used ones still seem overpriced.

Neither car drives 'nice' as they're built on the ute platform (dmax/hilux). If you want a nicer drive you'd be wanting to step up to a Prado (which would be my recommendation).

GX Fortuner is pretty plain imo, not a lot of features (but it is fairly cheap).

As above, how much are you towing?

Maybe the older shape Pajero would fit the bill, or a used Prado

    • I have looked into pajero and Prado's, so to get something under 70k on clock in pajero is around 35 or prado are over 40. So if I push my budget to 40, I can get a new car with warranty, so doesn't make sense going second hand

      • But you're not comparing apples.

Go drive a used Prado and a Fortuner and you'll see what I mean.

        • I have driven a MuX, fortuner, prado, pajero and a patrol. The Prado is the definitely the best probably followed by Fortuner. However the Prado will have no warranty and done a fair few km. I can sacrifice drive quality to get a newer car that will potentially last long time. The fortuner and prado have the same engine now

        • @Bargainkappa:

If you buy from a dealership you can buy a warranty. $1500-$2000 for 3yrs.

So don't rule out second-hand just because of warranty

The fortuner and prado have the same engine now

Engine means diddly squat when the ride is totally different.

But that's fine, go with the car you want you obviously have your mind made up.

But FWIW you won't get the Fortuner for $40k…

some of the lc120 on carsales has clocked >400kms and lc150 >300kms. surly that is long enough.

      • Pajero is a much better car than either the Fortuner or MUX. More powerful engine and better suspension.

OP said he wants a "car that will potentially last [a] long time".

    • Interesting read, however I cannot understand why they said the pajero sport is better than the mux when they said it had rough suspension and poor handling. The only bad thing about the mux is that it was dated
