Xiaomi Ninebot Plus Electric Scooter- Road Legal in South Australia?

This electric scooter has piqued my interest; the hook being the massive discount -58% off.

Is this legal on Oz roads; in SA to be specific?

Are there other alternatives?

Thanks for reading; all comments appreciated.

  • I love the "stuff carrying mode" :)

  • This item can't be shipped to Australia

  • Stuff from Xiaomi can be considered of reasonable quality.

So, if this cannot be shipped to Australia, are there any options of reliable quality out there?

    • Check on Mearth electric scooter ;-)

Not on public roads or footpaths, only on private property with permission.
    And SA specific: https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/driving-and-transport/other-for…

    • Claims to have 2 x 400W motors (which is huge!); that alone will make it illegal in probably all of Australia for public use. NSW had something like a 200-250W limit last time I looked.

      • The NSW rules are for pedal bikes with electric assist, not this type of thing. They need to predominantly pedal powered to qualify, that's why you don't see those moped looking ones anymore despite them only being 250w.

        • I knew it applied to bikes, I figured they just tossed Segways and the like in there as well.

So these get classed as toys? Or did they create a new category for this sort of stuff?

        • @D C: in reality they haven't really addressed these type of devices. They are classified in the same bucket as either vehicles or toys. Not vehicles as no indicators etc. not toys becuase well, they're not really made for 'playing'

      • just get some new stickers made up :)

        • Might work. Since the top speed is only 18km which seems a little slow given the claimed motor power your stickers might actually be accurate.

        • @D C: but it won't get past it being a toy and not being allowed on road related areas, under powered or not.

  • go to one of the 'speedy' serviceSA centres and ask and report back.

  • I don't understand the purpose of these devices. Why not just walk? If you need a bit more speed without the sweat, then use an electric bike.

Well… it's to reduce walking distance. They are also more portable than a bike. It can also serve as a shopping trolley too (showin the YT video)

Probably useful only in flat areas.

I know about the golf cart & luggage things, but I wonder if anyone has ever used these in construction. Just the thing for shifting bags of cement around.
