  • Help request: Does anyone happen to know what size SIM these take? I have an old Telstra full size lying around (still active through work).

      Standard SIM card (2FF)

        Thanks, you're a legend

  • Will this work with optus sim or will I need optus modem to get optus 4g?

    • Find out the brand and model then search for an unlock code on ebay.

      Is it a Huawei E3372?

        It's a Huawei E8372h-608

        • Warning: Many have negative experience with these eBay unlockers with this model. They are unlikely able to unlock it through sending you a valid unlock code. Someone has to have physical access to the device in order to unlock as downgrade of firmware is necessary. See others' posts below.

          @sylvester328:

That is unfortunate because Telstra are a colossal ripoff. Whenever I check on comparative prices I always come away amazed that Telstra has even one customer, let alone millions of them.

Coles is selling the same dongle for just $14 from this Wednesday. The catalogue also says it comes with 3GB data to be used within 30 days, not 2GB.

Was almost going to neg on the basis that it is not the cheapest and it is available at another very widespread merchant, but I suppose this is still valuable for people that want to buy it today or tomorrow and beyond this coming week of Coles' catalogue specials.

    • Oh thanks for telling me this, I'll be sure to grab one of these on Thursday!
Queue was too long today at the post office.

      • If you're willing to wait, it may even drop down again given Target had them for $9 in March this year.

        • Well I can wait until Thursday but not going to wait around for a month..
Actually I might be looking for a new cheap one in a month! (it seems cheaper to buy new ones for $14 on Telstra than to use the old one!)

        • The Target one has been cleared out. The newly renovated Target stores don't even stock them any more - suspect it will be a long wait to see a good price together with actual stock.

        • @smiley-k: cleared out everywhere? Not just in cities?

        • @pennypincher98: around where I live in southeast Melbourne that was the case - tried three of them. Only one had stock and I bought the remaining two units.

        • @smiley-k: Any way you can still see where stock is (in NSW?) - would a product code work if you know it? How recently did you clear it out?

          Cheers :)

        • @pennypincher98: No I don't kknow how to check stock. However this week Coles has the same thing on sale for $14 and two of the Coles I visited both have around 4 units when I visited this morning.

        • @smiley-k: but that's $5 more :( How recent did you buy them at target?

        • @pennypincher98: the $9 was back in March. A couple weeks ago (in July) Target was selling them at $14.50. No one know when the $9 will come again. But you could always try a pricematch at Officeworks given this Coles one is printed in the catalogue.

        • @smiley-k: Hmm.. 5% of $14 is $13.30 though, not worth my hassle - my nearest coles is a lot closer than my nearest OW.
          Thanks anyway though!

Any 10% off Coles gift cards?

        • @pennypincher98: don't forget to stack it with the 5% giftcard. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/300529

Can these be used without a computer? Thinking of plugging into a USB charger

    • Yes, and you can

  • You can unlock it yourself as per this comment.
    Worked for me :)

    • I tried it and failed. Was a nightmare navigating the steps, would not recommend for the faint hearted.

      • +2

Moreover, anyone stating "I have manually inspected and decompiled the code and determined it to be 100% safe" is probably the wrong person to trust.

  • Yeah the guides to unlock it for free work, I have unlocked mine too

  • Are these modems any better than the previous $10 Telstra 4GX hotspots (910V) from Woolies? Admittedly different form factor (USB-wifi stick vs. portable hotspot with battery) but trying to justify the purchase!

not better or worse, depending on your requirement. The USB one is smaller and easier to carry, whereas the battery one is easier to not have to think about having to carry the battery separately.

  • Heads up, the latest Coles catalog has these for $14 and 3gb of Telstra data.
