What Should I Do with $250 Worth of Harvey Norman Gift Cards?

Just got a $250 Harvey Norman gift card as a gift. As the gift card was a gift initially, I am less inclined to sell it off on eBay or Gumtree for cash.

At the same time, I don't usually shop at Harvey Norman much (just can't stand Gerry Harvey and the customer service (or the lack of) there in general) and would prefer to spend the least amount, if not nil, out of my own pocket when using this gift card. What would be the best way to spend the gift card if I am in your shoe?

Your input and ideas are much appreciated.

UPDATE:

Thanks guys.

I have decided to use it for a charity organisation instead, will head off and get a few of the items that they have asked for (mostly kitchen items…) later this week.

why? the person you gave it wont know anyway. just say you keep it, after a year they will forget.

Try to buy a vpay in store?

    • That's a good idea, but I'm not sure if they have that in the local store, will have a look.

      • I thought they just generated it at register … not sure though, I just read about it on the amex promo last year.

They might give you a hard time about buying a vPay card with a gift card though…

        • That's very true.

I am not sure if they will allow purchasing that using a gift card, but judging from my usual dealings with them through work, I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

          @systema:

Try sticking a visa/mastercard logo on top of the HN gift card.

Haven't you answered your own question?

You're not keen to sell the gift card.

You don't want to (ideally) get something from Harvey Norman for more than $250.

So … work out what you need that Harvey Norman sells for $250 or just a bit more and buy it.

Problem is, I don't really "need" anything from HN…
They are more "nice to have", which is why I want to hear from you guys re: what will you get for that money…

If someone gave you a gift of $250, then surely the idea is to buy something which would be "nice to have".

it would be "nice to have" a netbook to give to altomic……

@altomic: will you stop with the subtle hints and just say it what you really mean and stop beating around the bush.

        • @xoom: why you so focused on altomic's bush.. that's his private bush not yours.. bushvert

        • @AlienC: jelly that no one beating around your bush. Im sure jv can oblige.

        • @xoom: :'(

Wait for a good deal on HN posted here, buy it, wait till the deal is over, sell it. You might end up with even more cash then what was on the card.

  • If you don't want to sell the gift card directly why don't you just buy a popular item or two and sell them on ebay/gumtree?

Buy something from HN for $250 or less

Head in and buy a cable. Should be enough to get you one if you negotiate

      Hdmi cable sorted.

You will also get a free explanation about how much better it is than a $10 one, they're pretty good like that at Harvey Norman. If it's a lot over the $250, they might be able to do interest free finance for the rest.

    • Don't forget about extended warranties for that cable.

        • Here at the JIMB0 Foundation we are all about creating jobs. Our first (and probably only) project is to create one job by funding the early retirement of JIMB0 himself.

        • @JIMB0: That's all I need to hear for me sounds legit where can I sign up and donate my entire family's life savings.

  • Wait for an appliance/bit of technology in your house to break down, and then use the voucher. Just keep an eye on the expiry date.

Give it to me… Best suggestion ever!

  • It was my birthday in February. I would love an HN gift card. Feel free to send my way if don't know what to do with it :).

Go to the store one day, hang around the registers and try not to look suspicious. Wait until someone is going to make a purchase of over $250. Approach them and say if they can buy the gift card off you for say $250.

Then take cash and go home.

  • +3

HN already have the money, you would be doing them a favor by NOT using the gift card at their stores.

  • +2

Been said but grab some gifts for upcoming friends/family birthdays. 2 or 3 appliances or tech things etc.
OR spend it on something a local soup kitchen may need and donate it

  • Mobile sim cards & software (when there is a special) spring to mind. You'd require close to none (if any) customer service when buying those items

Otherwise, since you've already decided you're not going to sell the card, just keep an eye out for HN deals on anything that you might be interested in and worry about how to spend the balance nearer the expiry date. Who knows, a household appliance might suddenly need to be replaced in that time.

  • If you're not selling the gift card, then you're keeping it… which means you've got to use it to buy something from Harvey Norman.

What else can any of us tell you to do with it?

If you don't know what to get for yourself, then pick something for someone else.

Father's Day is coming up soon.

  • Give them to meeeeeeeee

  • I cant believe OP did not use the voucher to buy rechargeable batteries. I propose we ban OP from Ozbargain for not living the code.

  • Just send it to me lol

First thing you should do is ask gift giver. Why on earth Harvey Norman? It just seems so odd, I could understand if there was some sort of association though.
