Is Surgery Done in Private Hospital Considered into Your Safety Net?

My son recently got his tonsils out in a private hospital, and it cost close to $2k.

However when I checked my safety net it's now at $300, does anyone know whether surgery done in private hospital counted towards your safety net? I called the surgeon's room but they said they have no idea.

  • Medicare Safety Net

Provides a higher Medicare benefit for out of hospital costs. Your doctor’s visit will still cost the same, but we’ll give you a higher benefit back.

  • If not mistaken you can have surgery in children hospital at no cost. Check your gp. May not for your case though. Worth a check.

  • From my experience, any doctors bills for services undertaken in a private hospital are not covered under the safety net and you only get the standard medicare refund.

  • $2000 for any kind of surgery is a complete bargain.

    • It's Australia.

Surgery is free at public hospitals. I had a day surgery/hand surgery (plate for broken bone). Walked out without paying a cent with free antibiotics and pain meds.

      • Medicare is a wonderful thing.

      • Unless it's elective surgery then you wait, wait, wait

        • +1

or sometimes it's not truly elective and is utterly necessary but the wait is too long for the public system or your surgeon doesn't operate in the public system

      • Yes, when compared to the Americans our system is great.

  • Can you guide which hospital did you go and how much were out of pocket expenses?

Our ENT specialist is quoting roughly 6k for private surgery.
