  • Thanks OP - been wanting to try this out for a while!

  • Hands down the best software purchase I've ever made. Amazing.

    • -1

really just to help you "manage" the cesspool that is australian tv ?

      • U have no idea what you're talking about

        • -1

          @Bellpop

So why waste typing a line telling me im wrong instead of typing a line telling everyone what it really does ?

Plex Pass gives you exclusive access to awesome new features and apps. Record TV for free over the air,

Like i said it helps you record Australian TV.

sync your media for offline enjoyment, rest easy with parental controls, and enjoy enhanced music, photo and video features—all of this and much more when you upgrade.

THis is the management side of your "Australian tv" content.

  • Thanks! Me too have been waiting for the half price. But this will give me a good idea what the Plex Pass do :)

  • Thanks, good way to try it !

I might be missing something here but it basically just houses your media? What's so great about that?

    • Do you own more than 1 streaming device at home (tablet, computer, smart TV)

      • Yes I do but do I use more than one? Not really.. And if I do, I normally use my chromecast.
Is this a better way to do it?

And I use my wireless hard drive for any movies/media I watch

        • +1

Yes - most people use both together. Plex on your device with your media, and the server casts directly to your TV. You can use your phone's Plex app to combine it all together.

        • @pifts: Lol its been a while since I used my TV, this might breathe new life into it - its just easier to watch it on my laptop/tablet mostly

        • @pennypincher98: Yeah me too lol. I guess if you have a huge stash of movies on your computer, Plex's role is just to stream those to your iPad with no lag.

        • @pifts: lol yeah my huge stash of movies is on my wireless hard drive and that streams to my iPad perfectly fine for me :)

        • @pennypincher98:
Yeah, but only because you went and stored them in a format that is compatible with your ipad. Plex can re-encode those same files on the fly so that the stream is compatible with whatever device you are using to view. When you download for offline viewing, it makes sure to pre convert for compatibility if necessary.

        • @Steve K: Lol you make it sound like so much work. I downloaded as mp4, put onto my wireless hard drive as mp4 and played as mp4.

  • +1

Wasn't or isn't there a way where you can stream from other people's collections?

I haven't tried Plex in a long time, is there any other benefits to this?

    • +1

      from their website:
The "Paid For" Parts: Apps and Plex Pass
There are really two things that are "paid for" within Plex:
The Plex Pass subscription includes free use of the paid for apps as well as other features and benefits:
Activate all of our mobile apps (Android, iOS, Windows, Windows Phone) simply by signing into your Plex account within the app.
Set up a cloud-based "Plex Cloud" server pointing at content you have in one of your supported cloud storage provider accounts.
Stream trailers and extras (interviews, behind the scenes, etc.) for content in your movie library. Add lyrics from LyricFind to your music libraries to follow along whenever you want.
Have tags automatically added for your photos and browse your photo library using the tags.
Use mobile syncing for offline use, camera upload for wireless syncing of photos, Gracenote music reviews and bios, and the ability to sync select content from your Plex Media Server to multiple cloud providers.
Set up a Plex Home for your family to allow easy switching between accounts and restrict what content you share from your server.
Use DVR functionality (currently in beta!) to record over-the-air broadcasts into your library.
Get early preview access to new apps and features.
      And even more!
As mentioned above, apps for some devices have in-app purchases that upgrade the app—we call it unlocking the app:
Android (mobile), iOS (iPhone and iPad), Windows, and Windows Phone apps have one-time, in-app purchases.
Again a Plex Pass subscription will activate these features without additional purchase.

Has anyone used Plex Live TV & DVR?

  • +1

I was literally about the bite the bullet last night and pay for a months sub. This is awesome, thanks!

    • +2

      Ozbargain saved your teeth.

  • is there anyway to pay for live membership via google play? I know you can pay the monthly sub but if there's a way to buy lifetime the same way would be great….

  • +1

    When does the code expire

    • Also looking for a reply here.

  • Thanks. I wanted to try out the Plex for Kodi functionality. I don't like the over-simplicity of the Plex Media Plater interface.

  • -5

Why would anybody pay or want to "watch" or catchup Australian "tv" ?

    • Which is the exact reason thousands of people have set up Plex to watch their own movies.
Recording TV is simply one feature out of dozens on Plex, you could use it for years without watching TV, recorded or otherwise, at all.

If you have a sizeable catalogue of movies, music or pictures, it does a pretty good job of cataloguing and sorting them.

      • -3

Hang on, everything you mentioned can be achieved with plex WITHOUT buying plex pass in any form. Plex pass is an EXTRA which helps with managing Australian TV recordings. If you dont NEEd those recordings you dont need plex pass and use regular free plex as is.

Pretty dumb to pay for a component that you dont need, when what you want is free.

        • Well, if it doesn't suit your taste, then this deal is not for you, it's that simple.

Pretty dumb to keep complaining about something you're not actually interested in.

        • -1

          @Magpye:

You dont get it because either you dont know how to read what ive said or you dont understand what plex plus actually gives you compared to the original free plex.

THats all i ever questioned, but you dont get it.

  • Damnit! Just setup a brand new theater system through the house and brought plex monthly 3 days ago.
Haven't even loaded any media into plex yet, I assume there's no easy way for me to take advantage of this? I was literally who this deal was designed for (albeit 3 days ago :P)

  • Since there seems to be a few plexers here, has anyone been able to get the plex app onto one of those telstra tv (roku) boxes? i'm thinking of getting a second hand one.

    • Yes worked on mine. But the interface was aweful, don't bother. Only used my roku to generate Netflix credit.

    • Yep works good. Need a special install patch to get addon working.

  • I wonder whether it is more cost effective to have a media center that runs 24x7 OR buy a dedicated online server (such as this)?

    • +1

Depends if you're watching at Home or Away.
Or maybe you're watching Home and Away. 😂

  • Thank you!

perfect timing NBN next week, cabinet it right across the road so maybe 20m-40m round trip.

    • -2

I do believe the Plex servers are hosted in the internet, not in the NBN cabinet across the road, regardless of how close it is..

      • you sound jelly. ;D

        • Very jelly, and hopefully it's 20-40ms, not 20-40m :D
