Laptop under 1k for Writer

Hi all,

My partner birthday is coming soon and I'm looking to get her a new laptop.

She's mainly going to use this laptop to write, so will probably need something fast and can multi task.

Budget is max 1k

preferably:
SSD
Backlit keyboard (to help her write in the dark)
Light weight (something under 1.7kg)
8G RAM (necessary?)
Brand new

Any input or link will be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance fellow ozbargainer

Word processing requires neither a fast nor hyper-threaded CPU. You can get something suitable for substantially less than 1k.

agreed. anything with an i5 processor, will do you justice - think around $500 ;)

    • thank you, any suggestion on the laptop?

Mibook air suggestion for me too

However just be aware the Air 13.3 (2016) has PWM dimming which means it flickers the screen at a frequency of 50hz when display brightness is turned down, which can cause eyestrain for some people.

If I had $1300 to spend though I'd get a Thinkpad T470s, which asides from being very up gradable and built like a tank, has good keyboards and Thunderbolt port. Something to consider as well if you want something that lasts a very long time.

Put most of the money towards software rather than pc specs, if the primary function is for writing and general internet usage she won't need all that extra oomph. That extra power may go unnoticed and better spent on other things

    • Do you have any suggestion?

    • unless shes a closet gamer and you find the underpowered paperweight "broken" in a corner two months later >.<

    Backlit keyboard

Can she not touch type? As they are not needed for touch typers and in your price range, you will struggle to find one with it.

Basically anything with a SSD should be 'decent' for a writer. word processing doesn't need mega cpu etc

I would be leaning towards something a TRUE HD screen is 1920x1080 at least for her.

This is one of my current favs, but a bit more than your price range, but you get what you pay for

  • Hi all, thank you for all the suggestion. Just wondering if there is anything good enough from this Ebay 20% off Tech

Takes a look on Asus UX330UA

    • Under $1k
    • 13.3" 1920x1080 IPS screen
    • Core i5-7200U processor
    • 8GB RAM
    • 256GB SSD
    • 3 level backlit keyboard
    • approx. 1.2Kg
    • This looks good, wish I had no fee master card.

  • Get a used HP Probook/Thinkpad and stick a SSD in it, done. Depends where you live but eBay will help with this one. With ex business laptops worst thing that can happen is getting a new battery and http://www.betterbatt.com.au/s/laptop-battery/ do the job

For a writer i suggest you set aside money so she can choose a full size portable keyboard.
keyboard on laptops can be shockingly small and can be difficult to type on.

    • Will keep this in my, thank you for the suggestion.

    • unless you have a really small under sub 10", they all use the 'standard' keyboard spacing. Yes they don't have the full set of function keys or number pad, but the keyboard spacing for typing keys are 'standard' widths etc.

      • true enough… i've never used a laptop keyboard that could replicate the feel and comfort of a full size one though.
