Casual Use Computer for $100 or Less

Hi

I'm looking to build a 100 dollar pc for just casual web browsing, and word processing. If anyone could also include a cheap budget 23 inch monitor, i would also be very happy.

Thanks ALL

Ask around friends/family if they have something to palm off

AFAIK $100 won't buy you anything new… How much do you think computer parts are, especially a 23" monitor?!

Youve spent more on headphones than this computer… odd, very odd

You should be able to get an Intel compute stick in this price range.
I got one with 2gb RAM & 32Gb storage, but with USB/microSD for $91 a few months ago.
Plugs into a TV so you don't need a monitor.
It is fine for Office tasks and stuff like Gmail.

      • How's working with a tv as a monitor, how many inches on your tv?

        • It's ok. I have other computers I use routinely, just use this for a low power device for some torrents and specific media apps that needed windows rather than Linux or raspberry pi.
I usually connect to it via vnc. It is fine for most Windows apps, but won't be any good for games or running lots of apps at once.

Use some of the $100 to buy a extra "0" lol

  • $100 will only get you a very basic system like this.

If you can push your budget by $39 (and don't mind installing Windows yourself), you can get something far more powerful (and a lot newer) like this. Both come with 3 month warranties.

    • Hey mate, do you know if i buy the parts myself and build will it be cheaper, than the system you showed or nah

Don't think it's possible to build anything new for ~$100, or even $200. Even if buying the parts secondhand, you'd struggle. Could probably find a cheaper system on Gumtree (plenty of ancient Core 2 Duo systems) but they'll be very slow… usable for web browsing/word processing.

      • donnot's prebuilt Dell deal works out cheaper than buying the parts individually.

For example, the CPU itself, if sold piece by piece, would cost you like $60~80 dollars. 4GB RAM like $20, HDD another $20 or so and case and power supply would begin at $50 minimum.

Then you have to pay shipping.

It makes sense to buy a refurbished PC if you're super tight. You could also buy a refurb Dell Latitude or Thinkpad T laptop, around $200 dollars would get you a 3rd gen Core i5 unit and you won't need to buy a LCD to use it.

  • Is this legit ? or do you mean $1000?

  • I picked up a second hand 21" Samsung Monitor on eBay for $14.50.

I was lucky though. You will be lucky to get anything for $100.

    Raspberry Pi?

    • Yep.

Use a TV for the display, add a cheap mouse & keyboard, and you can run a Linux OS, or something like Flint OS, and access google apps.

Other than finding someone getting rid of a very old desktop, I can't see many other options for getting out under $100.

      • Windows on Pi?

        • Nope, but you can make it like a Chromebox. And it fits inside your price.

Even the Intel compute sticks seems to be nearer $150 a shot, and to that you'd need to add other bluetooth devices which blows out the budget.

If you really want windows (and I wouldn't and it wasn't in your original spec), I'd be inclined towards a win tablet - say the Chuwi Vi10 - which had an HDMI port and could take USB devices.

    One-day sale at Hardly Normal:

    $48: Generic 7" Android tablet for $48 http://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/ipads-surfa…
$55: Logitech K480 Bluetooth keyboard (with integrated cradle) http://www.harveynorman.com.au/logitech-k480-bluetooth-keybo…

Use Google Docs or similar for free word processing. Might want to upgrade to the 10" tablet ($99), for a bit more comfort.

That's if you want something new/retail. Personally, in your shoes, I'd go for a second-hand or refurbished Chromebook.

  • ps3 linux mod

    • I heard they patched that….

      • well you won't be updating the firmware…

    Check the nature strip.

    • Council cleanups, spent a lot of my teenage years with my dad building computers from parts chucked out

        this

if you have only $100 to spend and you expect a PC… and a copy of Windows… and a 23" LCD… jeez, talk about choosy beggars

$100 at best gives you a 17" LCD and one of those Dell 780, HP 8300 desktops…that would do it but you need some skill setting these up or perhaps you can find one of those ebay deals w/ WIn7 installed.

Apparently the councils over here(Or at least in my suburb) now stop doing their free yearly (or however frequent their collection comes) curb collections and you now have to call if you want something picked up and even then, they will only pick up so much…after which you will have to find a way to dispose the rest or wait till next year and call again……and this will make it difficult for those who scavenge things …….

  • Your only option is to buy something second-hand, you should be able to find something around $100 - $150 that will do word processing, web browsing, access emails etc with no issues.

    • Any sources mate?

      • Take your pick - There are a few to choose from here
My pick would be the HP Compaq 8000 or the Dell Optiplex 790

        • For the price would that be cheap?

You will get most bang for your buck buying second hand.

    Try Greys Online Auctions.

For example, a small form factor desktop PC, Core2Duo with 4GB RAM, $9 (23 hours remaining):
    http://www.graysonline.com/lot/0003-2511896/computers-and-it…

Or, a HP 14" Core i5 laptop currently $89 (less than 5 hours remaining)
    http://www.graysonline.com/lot/0007-2512247/computers-and-it…

Or HP 14" Core2Duo laptop, $14 (less than 5 hours remaining)
    http://www.graysonline.com/lot/0004-2512247/computers-and-it…

Or Apple 20" iMac, Core2Duo 2GB RAM, currently $59 (1 day, 5 hours to go). But this will certainly rise higher (note there are multiples for sale)
    http://www.graysonline.com/lot/0006-2166529/computers-and-it…

The above are auctions, so the price may rise, especially near the end of the auction. There is also a risk that there is a problem with them as they are only tested that they power up and turn on, they don't go through the computer testing everything. And you may need to add some extra memory sometimes. You'd want 4GB minimum.
Just watch out for the ones where is says "quality failed", this means it failed their test and is only good for parts.

The bargains are good on there, it's generally companies getting rid of their old PCs, they flog them off to Greys for $20 or so, or flog them to a company who flogs them to Greys. I know because I work in a big company who regularly dumps hundreds of PCs when we refresh them every few years - we don't even care if we get nothing for them as we depreciated the asset over those years with the tax dept, as long as someone will take them away and secure wipe them for free or a small price. They are PCs with nothing wrong with them that are well taken care of, never touched or moved apart from keyboard/mouse. That is typical for most big companies.

  • Check gumtree for second hand computers, most are overpriced from memory but you might snag something for cheap if it comes up

    • I've NEVER paid full asking price on Gumtree :D

  • Gumtree is your best bet eg. https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/zetland/desktops/dell-optipl… or maybe even https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/croydon-park/desktops/dell-o… you should get away with at least one of these for a clean $100. You might even be able to go lower depending on how hard you want to drive a bargain.

Sometimes you can find eBay sellers flogging off bulk ex-lease PCs cheap eg. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-Pro-3000-Desktop-Computer-Quad…
This looks like would be pretty good too! Don't know how far away you are from "Croydon Park" but if you CBF to pickup there's $30 saving. I daresay wouldn't be too hard to snag a $60 cute little box here.
