Anyone know if these courses are online or on campus?

    • +3

Some of them online, some of them requires attendance at campus. For example Firefighting: The units are delivered online by distance, and also require attendance at a one (1) day practical session held at the Nirimba TAFE fire training facility, near Blacktown, NSW.

    free email?

    • +1

I don't think they are proper edu email addresses

    • +3

      you'll get a @tafensw.net.au email

      • +3

Yup… which means discounts on MS Office

        • really? I thought you need a .edu email…

        • It gives you an @tafensw one which meets requirements

      • email will qualify for unidays though..

Students are eligible for one scholarship per financial year and up to two scholarships over the four year period.

A person who is eligible for these scholarships:

    • meets Smart and Skilled eligibility rules
    • is aged 15 - 30 years at the time training commences
    • is concession-fee eligible (receives a Commonwealth Government payment/allowance or holds a pensioner concession card issued by Centrelink OR is a dependant of someone receiving a Commonwealth Government payment or holding a concession card) and/or is a social housing client (this includes public housing, community housing, Aboriginal housing, Crisis accommodation/supported accommodating, and private rental assistance managed by Housing NSW)
    • is enrolling in a Certificate I to Certificate IV qualification which is on the NSW Skills List (including Apprenticeships and Trainees)**
    • I guess this answers my question about the caveat on the page: *Fully government subsidised training, eligibility criteria applies.

    • That's different to these free "taster" courses though, right? The page only asked me these:

I am 15 years or older.
      I have left school.
I live or work in NSW.
I am an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident or humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen.

  • +8

Probably won't get into uni, thanks OP.

  • anyone enrolled and received confirmation? I enrolled to a course, once I hit finish button, the window closed too quickly I didn't even have a chance to read what it said. I haven't received any email confirmation so I'm not sure if I was enrolled?

Provide first aid, an 88 hour course wtf https://oten.tafensw.edu.au/course/357-r3034v01-provide-firs…

    • +2

88 nominal hours. I think it is because you also do another unit.

  • +3

which courses are online only? I am very interested ;)

I looked at the air fares tourism one..
    or admin
cant see if its online or on campus

    • +1

I'm trying to work out the study mode for some of these courses too!

Can't locate where they tell if they are on-campus, online or a mix :(

      • +1

Likewise! keen to do some if the are online - can't tell how to check though?

    • +2

Can now confirm that the tourism one is done online, as is the small business and marketing ones. I've called and checked. Majority are online.

      • +1

        Thank you!
Just enrolled in the tourism one!
Might as well do something as I'm staying home from work for a year with my bubba ;)

Haa earwax management. Theres also a pole inspectors course too. My imagination could not help but go wild. FYI these are mostly online as they are at OTEN but each TAFE area has their own free courses. Just search their webpage. These are free if you meet the 4 basic criteria I mentioned. If you want to do an entire course then the fee free scholarship may apply (if you're 15-30 y/o and on centrelink).

I have done 5 admin courses. Really good!

    • +2

I've been inspecting stripper poles for years! I never knew I could turn it into a trade and have THEM pay ME!!

    "Transition into FEE-FREE Scholarships

    what? 2016?

How many courses can I study for free?
One each or all study at the same time?

    • +1

No limit on the number to my knowledge (I did 2 at the same time), then enrolled one at a time for the other 3

      • Which courses did you do?

      • I got stopped at 4 I think. Just got a call from course co-ordinator who won't enrol me because she thinks I'm taking on too much work over 12 months.

    • I've called them and they encouraged me to enrol in as many as I want/can because they can't guarantee the same courses will be offered again depending on demand.

  • -1

Free as in everyone in the country overpays for it.

    • +2

Why was this downvoted? It's true. Better than paying for people to sit on the couch at home though, but there is too little done to push people into work once these courses are complete. Many complete courses so they don't have to do work for the dole, and can keep collecting centrelink.

Too little jobs, or difficult pathways into them, it's still an issue.

  • So you can't be 31 or older?
You may want to make that more clear in the post or title.

    • +1

The courses are free for the 4 basic criteria I mentioned. Age is 15+ and no other requirement..different story if you want to do a full course

  • Have enrolled. Thanks OP for this post!!

  • Hypothetically if I were in the ACT but have a family property in NSW could I register with that address? Or will I have to get a part-time job outside the border?

ACT taxpayers subsidise people who live in towns just outside the border like Queanbeyan but use our hospitals and schools… so I wouldn't feel bad taking advantage of NSW taxpayer-funded opportunities.

    • +1

Hiya. Absolutely use the NSW address as residential and your own as postal. They won't check;-)

  • Stuff like this makes me feel old and neglected. If you didn't get skilled up in early life or looking to reskill later in life there seems to be a bit of a blind spot for us "oldies". That and Contiki tours. ;)

    • +1

Why do you say this? There is no age limit. Only have to be over 15.

      • Member "Syba" mentioned above that one of the requirements is that applicant "is aged 15 - 30 years at the time training commences".

I'm not sure if this is accurate though as I cant find mention of that requirement on the site.

  • I've tried enrolling twice a few weeks apart and I keep getting:
Your fee will be manually calculated after which you will receive a re-engagement email

  • +1

    Finally they enrolled me!
The tourism course, she said are you sure because this course is hard AF !
Thanks lady but i dont care ;)
She even said she wouldnt even study it its so hard
    oh dear

    • How rude. Was she a teacher
      ? Good luck btw.

    • +1

Lol is it quantum tourism or touristic engineering?

  • This is great - thank you for sharing!

  • My experience to date is that OTEN have allowed me to completed 4 courses. The subjects are marked usually within 3 days to 4 days. All staff have been super helpful even reviewing assignments prior to marking. Overall, a fantastic experience compared to my experience many years ago.
