Torrenting Shut down

Hey folks
Just noticed every single torrent site has been blocked by our beloved ISP's in Australia. Is there any new torrent sites that are not blocked that you know about?
looking to download the game of thrones final episode next Monday.

thanks

Nope. Public torrent sites are bad, mmkay.

Foxtel now have the rights for GoT. You can now pay something like $80pm to watch GoT now. Bargain! /s

    • +103

      Thanks Malcolm Turnbull.

      • +52

        Thanks Rupert Murdoch.

    • Although not officially available, you can get HBO now for $usd15 per month. Or if you already have hulu, you can add it to your hulu account for same price. One month free as well. A bit pricy for just HBO, but turning it on for a month every now and then to catch up on shows works out pretty good.

    • +5

You can watch Game of Thrones for $15 per month via Foxtel Now, or in this case, via the free trial..

      • @Marrk - don't you first need the base pack? So total cost is more than just $15 per month?

        • +2

They changed it earlier this year, the $15 pop pack has Showcase.

        • +1

@Marrk: Cheers for the clarification. Hard to argue with that price!

        • +11

          Except it's in 720p with a watermark.

        • +1

@cashews: what's the audio like? 5.1 or just stereo?

        • +1

@salem: Just stereo. No subtitles available too.

        • +2

@Pandamony: that is not a very good online service.

        • +3

@salem: it's foxtel's streaming service, you'll be lucky if it works at all.

      • +8

it has the worst app and interface ever. It's so frustratingly bad. Difficult to find shows, difficult to watch one episode after the other etc. It's actually worse than iView somehow. I've got android, ios, samsungTV - they're all just total crap.

        • It's actually not too bad on Google Chrome (PC). I watch it at least for F1 and AFL - silky smooth. Guess the on-demand section of it isn't as good.

        • Not sure what you're doing, but if I find a show in on demand and select an episode from the list it plays one after the other. This is on PC, Telstra TV and Android tablet. As far as navigation without typing goes I'd rate Netflix worse.

        • +1

          @sabracad:

no idea… I don't use chrome to stream unfortunately… the samsungTV app constantly crashes (no other app on the tv does - netflix, spotify, stan, abc, ch7,9,10 all work fine). Then the android app is definitely better, but not as good as Netflix/Hulu/Stan.

Foxtel doesnt seem to cluster shows you've watched and shows you might like the same way netflix does. Netflix is the gold standard of streaming UI's so I'm not expecting a miracle, but the UI turns me off almost enough to quit subscribing.

If the video quality was better I'd live with it. But after watching GoT legally for the first time ever this season, and then seeing youtube clips afterwards from the same episodes in full HD, and you see colours in scenes which were not coloured when streaming from foxtel, you kinda wonder why you're paying money for it.

        • @sabracad: They do play 1 after the other but if you're to close the window and then open it again it's absolutely horrible at remembering where you stopped last time. Horrible as in, multiple episodes behind, not minutes behind.

    • I got 3 months free of the pop pack Foxtel now to watch it woop woop.

On another note it does say this is normally $15 monthly. Rip off compared to what you get on Netflix

    mine all work
just use the google dns n00b

    • +5

Same I'm using Google DNS and it works fine. Without Google DNS (using my ISP's DNS) the sites are blocked!

      • -2

How to use Google DNS ?

        • +2

Two options - you can set the Google DNS on router (meaning all devices i.e. smartphones, tablets etc. on your network use that) OR you can set it at the client/device level (i.e. on your PC). I would recommend that you set it up on your router to make things easier/simpler - what brand is your Router?

        • @PLA74: Its a Billion 7402 modem router

        • +1

          @PLA74: thanks

    • Thanks. Worked.

    • +11

      8.8.8.8 will set you free.

    • +5

thanks so much for pointing this out - for anyone interested, after doing a fair bit of reading I came across 'namebench' which tests which DNS is fastest for your geographical region based on the websites you typically visit (browser cache). Turns out a significantly better option for me is OpenDNS. article here

    • I'm using OpenDNS and it isn't blocking anything I don't tell it to block.

  • +22

is that what VPN's are for?

    • +4

      Yes

    • +1

It's not a VPN alone that allows you to access these sites, it's the DNS servers. If you use a VPN but still use an Australian DNS server, it still won't work. Using google DNS is an easy solution, and then use a VPN to anonymize your traffic.

  • +5

The trick is to find someone with a TD invite ;)

    • I'll take it if you have one :P

    • +1

I wasted 2 invites on Oz bargain before, now can not invite no more unless pay usd 20 :(

      • +19

That's why I'm keeping mine for Mr Right ;)

    • +1

      Tower Defense?

      • Pumped for Bloons Tower Defence 6. Now that HL2EP3 is over.

        • I'm waiting for HL3EP1.

    • +4

Happy to provide invites to Internet Protocol Telephony as well if anyone is keen and will use it.

      • I have 6 IPT invites. Will trade for another good private tracker.

    • +1

If you are a member do you need to pay anything?
Apparently you can pay $15USD and become a VIP but you only get 15gb of data.
Unless I'm on a different page because this URL is slightly different and says classic

  • +9

    Private trackers.

    • Amen to that. It's takes a little bit of work initially but it's so worth it in the long run.

      • +1

dl speeds are way better too, maxes out my nbn.

        • In all fairness, usenet would be the most ideal solution for automation and maxing out speeds. Finding a good indexer is another story though.

        • +1

I prefer how gazelle trackers handle indexing of torrents, vs going through those archaic usenet indexes. With gazelle it's all just there and content organised better than even iTunes handles paid content imo.

        • @AustriaBargain: Couldn't agree more. It's good to see further development being made as well on the gazelle codebase. I know of 2 trackers at least that are trying to expand features and security.

        • @fryandlaurie:

          Not really that hard though.

  • +36

    downloading torrents with no vpn?

who does this in this day and age?

    • +16

People in Australia on Private Trackers

    • +1

I've done this for the past few years, downloaded over 2tb of stuff, got 2 strikes for the same season of southpark though :)

      • +1

Can we get more details on the strikes, eg who issued them, for how much, the nature of the strikes? If it's a U.S company, can they legally hold you to any charges? I don't think the TransPacific Partnership Agreement went through, so I think we're safe?

        • +1

Quote from email from TPG: "TPG does not condone the use of TPG Services for activities which are
offensive, illegal, or infringe on the legal rights of other persons.
Such activities are expressly stated in your agreement with us as being
a basis on which TPG may suspend or terminate the supply of services to
          you
          ."

Cant seem to find the attached emails though, seemed more like a scare tactic than anything else

        • +2

This reminds me of that joke…

Q: What is a pirates least favourite letter??

A: "TPG does not condone the use of TPG Services for activities which are
offensive, illegal, or infringe on the legal rights of other persons.
Such activities are expressly stated in your agreement with us as being
a basis on which TPG may suspend or terminate the supply of services to
          you."

        • @zqipz: ok, I lol'd.

    • VPN doesn't make you immune. It just makes it a bit harder. If they're determined they will still get you.

Don't believe a VPN that claims no logs are kept ever.

      • Don't believe a VPN that claims no logs are kept ever.

        Why not ?

        • -1

It's difficult to run a VPN service without logs of some sort.

        • @lostn:

One could argue that they would go after people without VPN's before they move onto more difficult stuff.

        • @Masteraal:

even though you are running a vpn you need to be careful of which browser you're using

webrtc is enabled by default on google chrome

    • +4

      I do!

Over 30 TB in the last couple of years. No strikes!

The secret? Private trackers, and avoid recently released movies.

    • +3

Call me crazy but I've never had a VPN - and I have been torrenting for 15 years every day. No warnings, no letters, nothing.

      • +4

The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence

    • What about for old content? Do you still need a VPN.

      • +1

        Pirating is pirating.

  • +1

Someone recommend a good cheap VPN service please? appreciate your comments folks.

    • +6

      windscribe

      • +2

Windscribe is slow. Good luck downloading any torrent through it.

        • +1

          it is slow

          but it's free

          just downloaded 6 x 800mb movies

          did it overnight

          no issues for me

        • +3

@oscargamer: If you're happy with 800MB 360p DVD ripped movies in 2017, all is good.

I'd rather pay for a real service which you can get for $5 a month.

        • +1

          @lostn: Most 800MB movies are 720p

        • +4

@Savas: The bitrate would be poor at 800MB.

    • +43

      PIA

      • +1

PIA let's me use my max download speed. I'm on 25mbps with fibre to the node though so there's that.

I should note thought the fastest speeds comparable to native were always achieved using windows 7 with openVPN and connecting through melbourne PIA server. Getflix had a free vpn service when I was signed up with them and the speed allowed me to use half my bandwidth and they only cost $3 a month when I signed up. They are still that price if willing to sign up to 2 years. http://www.getflix.com.au/vpn

Just google your geolocation and that's generally where your internet leaves from the ISP so pick a location close to it.

Don't sign up for free vpn's, if you aren't buying a product, you are the product.

        I'd recommend PIA

    • +5

FREE 60GB Windscribe VPN for PC & Mac (Normally $90)

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/324910

    • IP vanish. Works well on Kodi boxes and Android tablets as well.

    • Just get getflix - that way you get a combination of DNS for torrenting and you can change your location for HBO / Showtime / Hulu / BBC / History Channel / Discovery / Nat Geo etc

      • Does getflix work anymore?

        • I use a cable TV account from the US I only paid $50 flat for it and it has lasted me 9 months so far. Cable TV accounts in the US give you unlimited access to all on demand network channels - if you can't get Netflix (because of the new detection system) - you just search which channel the show / movie is normally on (example Vikings on History Channel) then you just install History Channel on your Apple TV or Roku or PS4 or whatever and watch that way.

Same sharing syndicate does NBA TV, UFC TV, TunnelBear, Spotify US and others.

Kind of like people selling their 5 mobile spots on Hulu / Spotify in the classifieds only you get access to pretty much whatever you want.

        • @Michegianni: what cable account you signed up for??? Hadn't thought to do that. Smart idea.

        • @mooney:

Any of them. Direct TV at the moment but you can get Time Warner or Comcast Xfinity as well

      • You also get a VPN included. Not a fast one but it's there if you need it

    • +1

      Private Internet Access

Been using for 2 3 years. Maxes out 100Mbit connections if you can find one.

    • +1

PIA there was a deal for them a week ago on here

    • AirVPN, I got a 6 month sub for next to nothing, and the speeds are amazing for such a cheap service

  • +15

I don't condone pirating or downloading anything illegal.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/torrents/comments/5ok0yd/torrent_si…

    • Thanks.

      • Thanks for the list, easy to bookmark :)

      • +1

Wow. I had no idea KAT was back. Or Isohunt. New domain. I guess that's how you get past shutdowns. Kind of audacious to keep their old name though.

      • +1

Rutracker is all you need for any type of music.

        • Yes, excellent for music.

        • +2

@PJC: Pair it with soulseek for rarities and more diverse genres :)

        • +1

And - surprisingly for UK TV programs.

I finds lots of what I want there usually in very good quality.

      • An excellent list!

I would add MVGroup to it.

It's great for anything that relates to UK (and some US) TV documentary type programs.

Possibly my favourite site - after RU Tracker for classical music.

I'm actually still trying to recover from the loss of What.CD and The Box over the last cuople of years!

        • I miss TheBox and WCD so much! Most people moved from TheBox to TVCUK and MAM (for the audio) and to RED and APL from WCD.

        • @fryandlaurie:

I moved across to TVCUK, and it's not bad. Doesn't compare to TheBox for the older stuff though!

I think I'm going to have to get off my a*** and prepare to do the interview for RED.

MAM looks like a good possibility too - I'll give that a go later in the week.
