Help! Need a Gaming Laptop (Casual Gamer, Dota 2) Budget $1500

Hi guys,

Yes it's another one of those post, but there is a reason!
Last week, there was a 20% off sale on ebay and many good laptops were posted (which I didn't' get on because I was in two minds about buying another device). This week, a similar deal is on "PRESENT"; 20% OFF many retailers but no deals have been posted.

situation:
I have moved away out of home to a rural work site and want a LAPTOP for gaming, I had initially thought about moving my entire set up down there, but it's not worth it. I play some dota 2/ want to play other games from time to time. We have nbn in my place of residence in the rural area. I am looking for a laptop to play on the weekdays after work. Nothing too flashy as I have a computer at home capable of handling all games.

My budget is anything under $1500, the more value the better. More money saved is more money earnt.

Thanks

PS: I was thinking this. Thoughts?

2GB Vram is too low imo

  • If you must buy a laptop for gaming, buy a cooling pad for it. Graphics cards can heat up pretty quickly when you game, so a chill pad is a must. Also don't forget to buy a nice mouse to go with it.

    • Duly noted! Any that u recommend?

      • Not really, I have a Targus one that works fine and from memory it was pretty cheap. It's USB so you just plug it into the laptop to turn the fans on :)

    • a chill pad is a must.

      No it isn't.

OP wants the laptop for gaming. I don't play DOTA but my understanding is their games run long. Games are graphics and process intensive so the GPU and CPU will get hot and continue to heat up the longer they game. In a laptop they will be situated under the keyboard, so can get a bit uncomfortable. In the heat of an Australian summer, the temps may get high enough to cause a bluescreen in the middle of a game, but that's worst case scenario so pretty unlikely. Either way a cooling pad will make the laptop run cooler, which is always a good thing for PCs.

You can get a cooling pad for pretty cheap (e.g. $14 from UMART for laptop up to 17") so I think it's a worthwhile purchase given OP wants the laptop for long gaming sessions.

OP can always wait to see how the laptop performs without it before buying one, then pick one up if they feel they need it. I just thought it worth mentioning at the point of buying the laptop as they may save on combined shipping if their vendor of choice offers a cheap cooling pad. I would not want to pay $15 to ship a $14 cooling pad on its own.

  • The one op suggested comes down to $1320 and comes with a mouse and a bag with two year warranty so its a pretty good deal I reckon.

    • Thanks. Yeah that's what I'm thinking?
      Has a mouse too.

  • anything with a 950, 960, 1050, 1050ti, or 1060 would be more than adequate for dota 2.

Word of advice, to care for your 'gaming laptop' youll probably want to get a cooling pad, avoid leaving your laptop plugged in for long periods of time, cycle your battery, which ironically makes it more of a hassle than having a SFF gaming pc

Here are some good options. I have a Gigabyte P35G v2,and i quite like the gigabyte range of laptops:

    Metabox:

    Alpha

    Gigabyte:
    Sabre

    Asus:
    ROG GL552VW

    • Im just curious have you ever purchased a laptop from ebay US? That one you have linked from Asus is just so tempting

      • if its a reputable store its fine.

but the asus is in america so dont do it.

  • Lenovo Thinkpad E570P is another option. Can be well below your budget sometimes.

Have you checked out the Razor ones? Razor Blade I think it's called, that's gonna be my next buy but might be slightly over your budget.

  • Dota 2 can be run on really old few hundred dollar laptops with no issue.

a 840mx will ultra it out

imo, if you're unlikely to be using it to play AAA games and just Dota/LoL/indies just get a < $600 one, if you want 2 in 1 and some build quality get a < $1000 one

just remember GFX is not everything. it might have a 1060 but do you really want to carry around a 2.7kg plastic brick with 500g power?

also cooling pad is least of your worries. you're playing dota 2 and probably a few indie games not triple A on ultra

    • Also if you are a competitive dota 2 player you would want to play on low settings anyways to get that advantage
