My son has lost the key to mums 1999 Honda. We do not have a spare and need to get another cut to fit ALL locks (two door HRV and boot) what is the cheapest way to do this as we want are thinking of selling it ☺

cheapest option is to sell the car as is.

serious answer - the cheapest way around this would be to start calling up wreckers to see if they have a 1999 Honda HRV (or similar year) with a key. go to the wrecker and extract the door locks and ignition barrel. and put them into your HRV

  • Okie dokie yep sell as is is an option ☺ as $350+ to get key fixed is a bit crazy… thanks

    • $350 is cheap!
Problem is coding a new key without an old one.
If you had the old one, it'd be cheap.

If you find a red key, whatever you do, do not use it.

How old is your son? - $350 is about what you will pay…Is it time for the actions have consequences lesson?

You wont sell it for much if the prospective buyer can't open, lock, start or drive it.

The $350 is probably to get the key transponer coded to the car as well, it's not just about the locks.

  • Do 1999 cars had transponders already? Interesting…

    • +1

Absolutely.. it was fairly common after 1995

IF money is tight, you may wish to get one of these and get your son practicing asap.

  • We do not have a spare and need to get another cut to fit ALL locks

As in you have NO keys left to the car?

  • Few comprehensive insurances do cover stolen keys.

    • Ok … mmm mum has NRMA

      • +3

Yes, please make sure you provide your son's full name and address in the police report.

Surely your son is paying for the replacement? If he is worried about the cost, let him do the research to find a cheaper alternative. If he is old enough to drive he is old enough to learn a lesson.

    Honda dealership.

Probably not the cheapest way. They don't call them stealerships for nothing.

      • There's a chip in the key so you can't just get any old keys cut. You have to order it.

        • Locksmiths (that do auto keys) can code the chip for you as well. It's still not cheap though, but might be cheaper than Honda.

        • @Euphemistic: that's only if you have a spare key for them to cut with

@niggard: and how does a Honda dealer get a key without one to copy? They most likely send a blank to a locksmith to have it cut to shape from the key code allocated to the car. they are hardly going to have a spare key for every single car they sell, or to have a key cutting rig in their workshop to cut a key every now and then.

        • @Euphemistic: so are you saying to get a blank and cut a new key using the code… possibily cheaper?

        • @hsk: I'm saying shop around, don't just go to the big place with the H logo on it. Dealerships rely on people not shopping around and add lazy tax to their prices.

        • @Euphemistic: thank u ☺

        • @Euphemistic: Honda can cut the key using your VIN code, you still have to get the car towed in for them to reprogram.

        • @JOCKz: Honda said $800 to get a key

        • @hsk: looks like that's what you have to do then.

Your son, the keys to your mums car? His grandmother? Or your wife?

    • Maybe the son's mother?

    • your ex-wife? your mistress?

    • Nans car

      • Maybe it's cheaper to suggest to nan her driving days are over because her eyesight is going, she isn't as quick to react to things anymore, etc etc

      • Haha so it was right the first time, I thought it would've been weird to change mid sentence.

  • Rivet a padlock like Mr. Bean's mini, or get one of these as keyless entry.

and hotwire a toggle switch under your steering for keyless start.

These premium added features will increase your resale value by 5 grand.

Call in the experts: get your son to visit the local bikie chapter. They can 'fix' anything for a price … they often have a deferred payment plan too (the true cost comes out later with the free return flight OS).

  • Does a 99 Honda have any value anyway? Just scrap it.

  • Get the ECU flashed to remove the transponder key, then get the key code read out of the ignition lock and new keys cut to suit.

Else buy an ECU and key from eBay.

Not sure what Honda charge for lost 🔑

Consider going to an Auto electrician and see if they can install a keyless ignition. There are kits on eBay as well if you're handy. Basically ignition switch is changed to a button, and you have a remote to open the doors and boot. The ignition only works if you have the remote nearby.

Only issue may be a car security system if one is installed - but the auto electrician should be able to get around that.
