Amazon's Description:

A breathtaking near-future thriller. From the NY Times bestselling author whose books have sold over a million copies.

When DARPA's billion-dollar program to create Artificial Superintelligence is sabotaged, US operative Cameron Carr is tasked with finding the culprit. He's been on high-stakes missions before, but this time the stakes are nothing less than the future of humanity. Because the race to evolve a superintelligent computer is on, and power players around the world will stop at nothing to get there first.

In the right hands, Artificial Superintelligence could lift humanity to towering heights. But in the wrong hands, this technology could represent the greatest threat humanity has ever seen …

Ripped from tomorrow's headlines, Infinity Born is a roller-coaster ride of a thriller that explores the deadly perils and mind-blowing possibilities that await the human race—including both extinction and immortality.

As our phones and computers become ever smarter, Infinity Born takes an unblinking look at a technological tipping point that is just around the corner. One that will have a profound impact on the future course of human history.

Jeezuz…that synopsis would have me running a million miles to avoid this one even if a freebie…..but the huge number of very positive Amazon reviews says (hopefully) "ignore the hyperbole"…thanks OP

    • If you'd like an interesting read about the much-sooner-and-more-significant-than-you'd-think advent of artificial superintelligence based on the current research try this one:

      https://waitbutwhy.com/2015/01/artificial-intelligence-revol…

It's by the guy who interviewed Elon Musk about Tesla and SpaceX's end goals and writes easy articles about the Fermi Paradox and such. Very entertaining and interesting.

  • I just tried to buy it on the AU site and got this:

"Due to copyright restrictions, the Kindle title you're trying to purchase is not available in your country: Australia."

Never seen that before when something is listed on the AU site

Edit must have been a glitch, tried again and on the 7th attempt it purchased successfully

Audible narration for $1.99 usd is always a good deal too. Thanks!

  • Have read a few of his books and just finished reading this one. Love his books, he is a master and keeps the suspense and twists until the end. Highly Recommend!

  • Thanks OP

I read the last freebie of his (split second) that came up a few months ago. I found it an inspiring read - as never before had I felt so capable of writing a NY times bestseller, knowing that this guy did it in spite of being a terrible writer.

Based on the synopsis I suspect this will be similarly awful, so might be a little more overpriced.

    • I felt so capable of writing a NY times bestseller, knowing that this guy did it in spite of being a terrible writer.

That's exactly why these "free" deals come up; these self-published authors use a ton of tricks to try and give their ratings spikes into "bestseller" territory… free promos, launch teams, review circles, paid endorsements etc… then use the shonky "bestseller" blip to get more attention… it's all garbage!

If his writing's so bad, then why are most of the reviews positive?

      • 50 Shades of Grey appears to have pretty positive reviews on Amazon, and it is objectively awful. Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's not complete trash.

Although in this case I'm assuming it's because you don't expect much when something is free. I.e. low bar = high satisfaction.

        • 50 Shades didn't rate quite as high as this book did, though. And it also rated highly because it was read by middle aged housewives and other 'low brow' readers.

        • @MrZ: So what you're saying is the people who rated 50 shades may not have been the sharpest tools in the literary shed? But were still able to submit reviews on Amazon regardless?

  • Haven't had a good sci-fi book to read in a while. Not sure this fits the bill but will give it a go. Thanks OP.

Bring me some books like Wool, Sand, Dune.
