PayPal Vs Credit Card for International Purchase

Hi guys,

Im just about to purchase an item for $400 USD, but contemplating which option will supply a better rate?

1) Nab Velocity Amex Credit Card (3% international fee is a given, but not sure about rate conversion)
2) Paypal which is linked to the above card? ( not sure about rate conversion and any other associated fees)

Thanks in advance!

PayPal is 3.5% above the exchange rate: https://goo.gl/vKn25d

If you have concerns about the seller, best to use PayPal as your card is linked and that will give you two forms of protection, PayPal and chargeback.

Why you no have 28degrees or Citibank?

Pretty sure NAB will still slug you 3% even if you use PayPal to purchase from an overseas retailer, so I would just chose NAB's conversion rate, rather than PayPal's.

  • Citibank Plus Visa/Mastercard Debit is fee free for international purchases.

  • Not not hard maths to do, if paypal is taking 4-6 cents in every USD dollar, wont straight 3% be smart?

When you use an Amex on Paypal, the currency conversion is handled through Amex. I think the outcome would be exactly the same for both options.

    • That's exactly right. AmEx doesn't allow third-party rate conversions (otherwise known as DCC), they prefer to handle that themselves and give customers surety about their rates.

    Use Paypal.
Charges will be identical since the currency conversion will be provided by Amex either way. You will get the bonus of Paypal protection on top of the security of using a credit card.

    • Thanks fellas

      PayPal it is!!

  • Beware of using PayPal. Once upon a time I made an error of twice bookings with an airline resulting two similar payments . I lodged a complaint to my banker since I did not have suffient balance for the 2 nd payment ( I did it for safety purposes as I am an oddity). My banker realised their mistake so they charged back to PayPal. Now it became I owed money to PayPal who took every threating tones ( all carried Philippinos ascent ) to take me if my payment was not settled with them. Obviously they refused to charge back the specific airlines which was probably their big client and so not to have a sour relationship with them. Since PayPal is big, I paid them after getting a credit from the airlines with many many hassles.Thereafter I closed my account with PayPal, and won't recommend to anyone.

    • My banker realised their mistake so they charged back to PayPal.

That was your first mistake, you should have contacted the seller and asked them to refund the extra transaction.

      BTW, you have a banker?

Thereafter I closed my account with PayPal, and won't recommend to anyone.

PayPal is fine, you just need to know how to use it.

Of course you have to repay paypal after the airline has credited you back, what else do you expect? You paid for 2 tickets, your bank charged back one, then you are only 1 ticket out of pocket. Then the airline credited you 1 ticket, so you are 0 dollars out of pocket. Do you expect a free ticket?

      • Hi, Demu, you misunderstood my position then. Actually at first I asked PayPal charged back the airlines which was AirAsia for the extra ticket since I did not have the sufficient fund for the second payment in my bank , and they refused my request stubbornly and insisted I should ask back the refund directly from AirAsia which is infamous for their policy of getting a refund. I did not do anything and ignored Paypay for sometimes as I just did not have enough fund to pay them back and I knew exactly it was just not easy to get a refund back from AirAsia. Unfortunately thereafter I was constantly bombarded by their sales consultants threating to sue me if I did not pay them quick. Finally I secured my daughter's help to negotiate wth AirAsia, and one could imagine what hassles we went through with this airlines. After numerous and headache ups and downs , finally I got a refund , but, but in AirAsia credit which I had to use up within 90 days. The constant threats caused me forced to get a loan from my daughter . By the way the amount isA$1,000.00.

  • If you want to avoid conversion fees then link your credit card like 28 Degrees to paypal and pay in USD.

AMEX is only good for points and purchase protection cover (usually cover for loss, theft for up to 3-6 months, exceess applies)
