Spotify: $5.99/Mo Student AU Portal

1000

Spotify Australian Student Portal is active.

$5.99 per month.
They finally give students in Drop Bear country discounted rates.

Not sure when this happened, but at least it brings us on par with Trump Territory.

There's cheaper stuff if you want to tunnel to the land of Jollibee and pay in Pesos, and hi-5 the Punisher while you're at it.

This is the Eligibility Evidence Screen

It's cheaper if you go on Spotify Family with 5 other people. Works out to be $3 pp per month.

    • +11

yeah, ive just been doing the 99c stuff each time.
I emailed spotify in 2015 and asked why australia didn't have a student portal, and they said because it's not set up yet and licensing stuff.

I'd need to find 5 friends for the family rate to be cheaper, by the way…

this was just more PSA than anything

    • +1

I was on this for a good 9 months before Spotify somehow caught on and kicked us off because we weren't living in the same residential address. How they figured that, I have no idea.

      • +1

Maybe you guys didn't write the same address down. I got kicked off because the main member wrote Melbourne as the city instead of their suburb… Wrote a few emails and haven't happened since (fingers crossed).

      • Its pretty obvious if you listen at home in many different places with different residential IP addresses/machines.

    • +7

But I don't have any friends

  • +5

This has been around for a while now…

    • +1

since the 99c in june? that was the last time I used the web portal to log in, and students weren't showing a page at the time, it redirected to the states

      • +1

        Student edge was offering this.

        • -3

I filtered them to my junk… probably explains it

        • +1

@NeoBeum: well too bad they have some good deals occasionally. As an ozbargainer I will keep it coming in my spare email inbox.

        • -2

@Jimmy007: yeah, it is in my other email, its just most of the time, it never had deals that I liked,
id probably need to check that email regularly too, than quarterly like I am right now…
that's the only reason I logged in to spotify, my 99c from june is ending tomorrow

  • I am currently paying full price but I am eligible for Student. Can someone please tell me how to update?

    • I think cancel and resub via student portal sign up, I've never actually had a chance to buy at student rates, so, that's my guess

    • Cancel and resubscribe as a student?

    • Just a word of warning: the process is kind of a bit painful what with manually scanning your student ID into the system.. May have improved now though.
Also I think it is only good for 3 or 4 years.

      • Too late for you now, but if you enter an @edu.au email address then you are instantly verified.

        • Not too late for me because I am still on 99c trials :D
Joined a family anyway - $3 a month is awesome!

        • Where is the option for the @edu.au verify? It keeps bringing me to the 3 document page instead. I have an email for edu but no id's

        • @iJustinz: when you go to register for the student pricing it asks for an email address.
When i entered my home address I was then asked to scan school documents, but when I entered my Uni email address it went straight through.

    • nope you dont need to cancel and resub, just contact spotify through facebook if you can they change it for you.

Love Spotify shame Telstra partners with Apple Music

  • i thought spotify is free??

i downloaded the app couple days ago….is there a expiry date or what??

    • nah, its free with ads, and no shuffle

you can get a really good adblock though, and it does the job

      • thanks for clearing that up….
yeah…that's good enough for my 7 year old kid.

        • +1

if they watch ABC ME, then the ads will be a novety

  • +2

I've had this for quite a while. Almost 2 months I reckon.
Verifying as a student is a bit easier in Apple Music (as it's done through UniDays),
Spotify is a bit painful, you'd have to upload uni statement/transcript and they'll get back to you. I guess with the new Student Portal its a bit better.
But still worth it, saving an extra $5.99/mo, as we are broke anyway.

    • so… july… all good.. was in my 99c sub

you needed to hand them in your transcript? wtf
I thought .edu.au wouldve sufficed… but at least that option is available now

      • Yeah I didn't use my uni email to register. So that explains.

      • A lot of people (already graduated) would still have a .edu.au email. I have one back from 5-6 years ago and another active one from UTAS.

        • -1

it looks like its working without a edu au. I just tried.

all I needed to do was pay

        • nope, post screen has eligibility rep.

        • +1

SheerID is crap, UniDays would've been much better.

        • +1

          @mash: this 1 million times.

    • upload a doc(ed)ument. reminds me when I got a student card in the UK, I was a student of the University of Mullumbimby.

    • I thought it was only your student ID?

      • +1

I guess that will work too.

    • I did this a couple months ago. Registered with an @edu.au email address and was instantly verified.

  • -5

    Asking to submit evidence that I'm a student…. but I'm not :(

    • -1

Yeah, I had to go on a PC to double check everything… I got excited on my mobile…
      https://i.imgur.com/AqGLvMg.png

    • +10

So why did you bother even applying. This discount is not for you.

      • its cause I add3d open to anyone for about 5 minutes after I posted… then I checked on PC, and realised after the pay screen there was the sheerid check

    • +2

That "student" bit in the title is so misleading…

      • +6

        I'm a student of life.

      • Mo student, Mo problems?

    • Just find 5 friends "family members" to join, much cheaper that way

  • +5

Or you can just sign up to a Philippines Spotify account and pay bugger all. Bit strenuous when setting it up, but worth it in the long run

    • +1

What I did. Massive pain but it's set and forget

    • +1

I checked Philippines recently and was~$4, I'm sue when I heard about this process 1-2 years ago it was only~$2? Did I do something wrong or has it just increased that much? I guess since you're month-to-month prices are subject to change anyway?

      • +1

Looks like you're right, although family is only $1 more or so if you get someone else who wants to join.
Also it appears they have a student discount as well which gives you 50% off

        • Two more good options, both far less than AU rates - thanks!

    • +1

Mind letting us in on how to do this? Or a link where it's explained step by step?

    • dont forget to fist pump with the punisher, and gun down some ice addicts to claim yo medal

  • Anyone know if you can sign up to this using Unidays?

Reason I ask is because I can access Unidays verification with my alumni Sydney Uni email address.

However last time I tried Spotify student verification it needed details of my active enrolment.

    • +5

However last time I tried Spotify student verification it needed details of my active enrolment.

It's almost like they only want actual students using their student pricing. Thieves.

      • -1

No harm in chasing bargains via Unidays

        • +2

Apart from the fraud aspect of it, yeah, but that's a null concept for most on OzB, agreed.

        • -2

@Mic Cullen: That's debatable. It's still profitable for them to sell at this price. It's up to each company to decide what pricing model and discounts they want to apply and whether they want to enforce it or not.
If @bargainhunt21 wants to find the cheapest possible deal for themselves, so be it - this is what this site is about, remember?

        • +2

          @ocoolio:

No that's not what this site is about. Committing fraud is never officially advocated, although it seems highly recommended on a daily basis by the users.

        • @tromboc: Can you explain how is it fraud?

        • +2

          @ocoolio:

          fraud

          noun
wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.

By taking advantage of discounts intended for students, when you are not a student, that is wrongful deception intended to result in financial gain. Do you need further clarification?

Just because OzB seems to just wash over this and pretends it's all well and good to rip off big business because "they can afford it" (A paraphrase of you saying "It's still profitable for them to sell at this price….. and whether they want to enforce it")

I'm all for saving a buck, but not in ways like this.

        • -1

@tromboc: Unless you've read the actual contract and based on that they are in breach, you are just quoting some hearsay that it's for students. Define "students", define "intended for" based on the contract, then we can agree (or disagree) that it's fraud at all.

Until then your ignorant approach isn't any better than the one who wants to get a better deal.

        • +3

          @ocoolio:

Are you serious? I'm quoting hearsay?

ON THE FRONT PAGE RIGHT UNDER THE "GO PREMIUM" LINK:
"Offer available only to students at an accredited higher education institution."

ON THE EASILY ACCESSIBLE T&C LINK UNDER THE SAME "GO PREMIUM" LINK:
"To activate the Offer, you must submit information sufficient for us to verify that you are a Qualifying Student such as your name, valid educational institution, email address, date of birth or other documents used to qualify you to the Student Discount Offer (“Qualifying Information”)"

I really don't know why you find this hard to understand. By wilfully attempting to deceive a company into providing you financial gain, contrary to it's terms, you are committing fraud - that's the literal definition of the word.

        • @tromboc: People lie to themselves regularly, and you see it often on here when people try to defend fraud. They don't seem to care how stupid it looks, or how obviously illegal it is, as long as they can "save some money."

    • Spotify used to allow anyone with an .edu.au email address to sign up for student pricing but now that you have to send verification docs through SheerID it's neigh impossible for staff, or any students (former or current) who aren't actively enrolled.

It's a shame as most companies offering student/adademic discounts are also happy for extend it to staff too.

Cracked Spotify apk + deezloader for offline music from spotify.
    problem solved

    • Can you elaborate on that for me please? What does that allow you to do to? Use without a subscription?

      • +1

send me a pm, i'll elaborate for you there

        • Cheers. Am unable to send you personal messages it seems?

    • Could you please Pm me more info TIA

  • ..

  • retarded verification, i sent them my actual enrollment and generates some bullshit email stating it's not a valid document due to no date…. yet it clearly states the date next to the uni name and my student id.

    • I had to mail them to get my documents verified.. it is a US based verification, which is retarded

  • join under a family is better..i guess

  • How is a high school student not a student? My daughter is in a specialist music program at her high school and thus would really be great for her. I guess since she doesn't earn any money, she has to pay the full amount? Not really fair IMO.
