Switch from Existing Spotify Premium Family Plan to Basic Family Plan for $20.99/Month, Save $7/Month (Save $84/Year) @ Spotify

2280

An update of the previous deal, except due to Premium Family increasing to $27.99 per month, the saving is now $7 a month / or $84 a year! (while Basic Family appears to remain at $20.99)

Taken from previous deal:

As a Spotify Premium Family $23.99/month subscriber, I was looking at the available plans and discovered Basic Family which is exactly the same, without the 15 hours per month Audio Books access, which I never use anyway and is $3 cheaper at $20.99 a month. I promptly made the switch and the change will occur on my next billing cycle.

So I thought I'd share this to other subscribers who may not use Audio Books and want to save $36 a year!

Please note: To be able to subscribe Basic plan on Australia market, you need to have been on active premium before May 9, 2024.

How to switch between Spotify Plans:

  • Log in: Go to the Spotify website and log in to your account.
  • Access Account Settings: Navigate to your account page.
  • Manage your plan: Look for the "Manage your plan" or "Subscription" section, and click on "Change plan".
  • Select your new plan: Browse the available options and choose the plan you want to switch to. This could be a different premium plan (like Duo or Family), or a downgrade to the Basic plan.
  • Confirm and finalize: Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm your selection. Spotify will guide you through the process, which may include confirming your payment details or verifying your eligibility for certain plans.*

Thanks so much for that advice! Never once used the audiobooks so I've definitely saved a bit of money. :)

  • +1

Is this a deal? It’s the regular price isn’t it? Two different products.

    • +5

Ah it’s a secret product, never mind.

      • Yeah, Ozbargain Gold™ members only. Bad luck for that guy I guess.

  • +10

A Sri Lankan mate put me on his Spotify family plan for $1.1/monthly, 4 years later we're still going strong!

    • +9

All my Filipino mates I live with here in Manila are big Spotify fans.

    • +4

Nice one. I'm still on Spotify Premium Family for $3.80/mth via Turkey.

      • This is basically the price each for a family plan

    • +1

      Keep that friendship strong.

    • +6

Us Sri Lankans pride ourselves on our generosity.

    • +1

I was on a Spotify family plan via Malaysia for 7+ years and lost access to it in September last year.

Got an email saying this "We’re contacting you to let you know that you’ve been removed from the Premium Family plan you were on. We believe that you’ve been using this plan from a country other than the country where the plan owner purchased the subscription. Premium Family is only available for family members that live together."

Not sure how you guys still have access, but good on you!

      • Interesting. Were you the family plan owner, and were you using a Malaysian payment method or giftcards?

  • +2

I saw this the other day when they sent through the email about price increases.

Is there any other features you lose by going down to the basic plan? (hi-res audio quality etc)

    • +1

      Mainly just audiobooks

      hi-res audio quality

Nahh way too advanced for them, still not a thibg after being rumoured for years AND at a higher price (which no-one else charges more for, even Tidal brought that to their most basic plan)

    • Spotify doesn't have high res quality

  • +1

In Australia, we do not see the "Basic Family Plan" available - at least not for me

    • +3

I can confirm I do, have just swapped over using the redirect link from OP.

      • I am not able to see the Basic plan when I click on manage

        • Ah, that sucks. Looks like the comment below explains it is only available to some accounts and not others.

    • +3

You have to have been an active Spotify subscriber (not on the free plan) on a certain date to be eligible for the basic plans. I forget exactly what date it was, but I think it was either sometime in 2023 or 2024. I had a chat with Spotify support a couple of months back and they basically just said "Sorry, the basic plan isn't available to you".

If you were subscribed before or after that date, but weren't on a paid plan on the specific date then you can't get basic.

      • +1

@bonezau Makes Sense now! I am a Premium user only since 2025 - Thank You!

      • You quoted 9/5/2024 here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16740893/redir
I also imagine switching from cheaper international accounts like Egypt/India/Turkey would reset the counter. I did this recently and don't see the Basic plan despite having a family plan for multiple years

    • Must be changed on-line , not in the app

  • +4

I can see "Premium Family, Premium Student, Premium Duo and Premium Individual" - Don't see Basic Family Plan

    • Same

      • -1

if you go to change plans you will see the basic family plan.

        • +1

No, that is incorrect. I'm well aware where the option should be, it isn't there. I just spent time on chat with Spotify and despite being on Premium for some time I am apparently not allowed this option. Cancelled my sub instead.

  • Audiobooks are the one thing I do need (kids), it was already garbage that they limited it, then they cut it to bare bones inclusions.. they're just books. Not precious. Should be unlimited.

    • +7

get a library card and download the libby app, free audiobooks

      • +6

Doesn't work very well due to everything popular being checked out. You can wait 1-3 months for a famous five audio book for example.

The limiting of digital audio books blows my mind

        • +2

The limiting of digital audio books blows my mind

Someone needs to pay for them…

        • If your library also has subscriptions to BorrowBox and Cloud Library, consider signing up to those. In my experience using those apps allowed me to borrow many audiobook titles more quickly than with Libby.

          • @milo: Thanks, I'm speaking of borrowbox, didn't know there were any others

      • They don’t have half of the stuff I want to listen to and the ones they have are always on loan. Better off just signing up some burner account with audible.

  • +1

I'm somehow one of the lucky ones - thanks OP it worked for me!

  • +1

    thanks OP for the reminder!

  • The other difference I can see is that the Family Basic plan provides 6 "Basic" Spotify accounts, while the Premium plan is for 6 "Premium" accounts.

Anyone know what the difference is? Will we get bombarded with ads all of a sudden?

    • +2

Basic is just music, 'Premium' is audiobooks and other lame things you will not probably use (like videos).

      • Yep, found the detail:

        Basic plans
        Basic plans are billed monthly.

Basic is available for previously existing Premium subscribers. Eligible subscribers will see Basic as an available plan on their account page.

If you cancel your Basic plan, it’s not possible to resubscribe to it.

Basic plans won’t include monthly audiobook listening time, but audiobooks are available to subscribers as one-time purchases.

Plan members each have their own accounts with offline and ad-free music listening

Other Premium features relating to non music content may not be available on Basic plans.

      • +2

Even worse - only the main account holder gets 15 hours of audiobooks. The other "premium" family members get no audiobooks.

      • +1

Also podcasts, almost everybody on our family plan uses them and they sneakily include them in the non premium version sadly.

        • So are Podcasts included or not included in the Basic Plan?

          • @rufus001: You can listen to podcasts but the ads are very very frequent and unskippable.

            • @mearkat7: That's the same for Premium though!

              • @Dalryk: That hasn't been my experience, obviously most podcasts include their own ads but you can just skip past them. When you're on basic it acts like a spotify free account where by the ads are separate "tracks" and unskippable.

  • +2

thanks for this! any saving is a good saving - the OzB way.

  • +3

Their CEO recently came out saying prices will keep rising, while offering 'more services' which are things users do not want nor ask for (likely going to be live concerts and music videos etc).

I am a huge user (listen up to 8 hours a day), but even I have limits to how much I can pay. j

    • +4

Spotify’s CEO Daniel Ek has invested over €700 million (~$760 million USD) into Helsing, an AI military company, starting with €100 million in 2021 and then leading a €600 million round in 2025, where he also became its chairman.

At the same time, he’s said Spotify prices will keep rising, while adding “extras” no one asked for.

If you care about value (and sound), move to Tidal, it’s cheaper than Spotify and already offers lossless, hi-res audio that Spotify still hasn’t delivered.

      • I am already taking the steps to do so, my 4 other 'family' members have been notified…

  • +1

Switched from Premium Duo to Basic Duo.Saved $2 a month.
Don't listen to audiobooks so worked out.

You need to be on a 'Premium' plan for the 'Basic' plan to show up, excluding the cheaper student plans.

  • +1

Thanks. I started listening to the audiobooks after the last post but now will downgrade as it’s not worth $7 for 15 hours when I usually fall asleep and miss most of those hours.

  • Can you join straight away onto Basic Family?

    • +1

To be able to subscribe Basic plan on Australia market, you need to have been on active premium before May 9, 2024

      • What if I was on premium during that time and have been on free for a few months now?

  • +1

Worked for me, thanks Op for posting

  • +1

thanks just did this as well

  • +3

I had NFI that I had the Audio Books as part of my Premium Family Plan… which no one uses and unlikely will, even if I told them! I've bumped down to the Basic Fam now and saved some bucks! Cheers OP!

    • +1

Yeah same here! Lol never listened to a second of audiobook… glad to have found this post!

  • +1

Confirm that it worked for me too, thanks OP!

  • +2

$5 saving on the duo plan, cheers

    • Same here, great find. Rip off increase tbh

  • +1

Worked for me, thank-you very much!

  • +1

    Worked for me, thanks!

  • +1

    Thanks heaps!

  • Wow cannot get basic option, only premium family… via app and website…

  • +2

    Great pickup!

Didnt realise i was paying for audiobooks that i never listen to!!

    Thanks!

  • +2

Beware if you do this you will get ads included in podcasts as it's no longer a "premium account" you get. Not a huge thing for some but almost every member of our family plan is big into podcasts so we all got a nasty shock with the frequent ads.

    • +1

There are many free podcast apps. I believe the default podcasts app on the iPhone has no ads.

      • +1

Default podcast app does have ads but not as many/as in your face as spotify. I also listen to podcasts across 3-4 different devices so having spotify just know where i'm up to is pretty helpful.

    • Just to confirm, the premium family plan has no ads in podcast for all members? And swapping to basic will then introduce ads to podcasts?

  • +1

thanks op just switched to basic duo -$2

  • Apple Music is now cheaper than Premium, even for new users and students, who also get Apple TV+ compared to nothing else with Spotify.

  • +1

Thanks OP worked for me… And I had no idea I was paying for audiobooks

  • +1

    Thanks OP! good saving

  • Sharing the account with 3 other ppl so will keep for now.

    • The audio books are for the plan manager only so it won't affect the other family members

  • This isn't new? I switched back in mid June

    • +1

It's an update of the previous post as the saving is now increased (moderaters marked the previous post as expired)

  • +1

Thanks! Just changed my Premium Duo to Basic Duo for a saving. Have never listened to an audiobook so been paying for it all this time!

    • Won't you get ads in your music with a Basic account though?

      • Spotify Free has ads, Spotify Basic, is just like Premium just no Audio Books.

Spotify's website refers to "Premium Basic", which offers the core Premium features like ad-free music, on-demand playback, and offline downloads of podcasts. However, this is a tier within the Premium offering rather than a separate plan. All Premium plans provide the fundamental benefits of ad-free listening, offline downloads, and on-demand song selection.

        Hope this clarifies.

  • gee this or $5.50 YT family. $21/mth for music???
If you're om.Android, There's revanced YTM for.those with superior devices. But for the inferiorr one's, I got 1yr of apple music single for $15 from our friends in gobblegobble land.

    • how do you get $5.50 for yt family anymore?

      • +1

My family moved to a former glorious soviet republic, family has been happy.for nearly 8mths.if we didn't have Google homes I'd have move to Apple

  • +1

    Sorted….never knew it existed.

  • +1

Just wondering when the price is going to rise to $27.99 per month? Mines still at $23.99, and I just checked and I could sign up for the basic, but I've got no email or indication of a price rise. And wouldn't it be likely that the basic price would also rise when the premium price does?

  • +1

Thanks for that. Unaware and had no use for the audiobooks.

  • +1

This is probably obvious…but make sure you're on the primary account when you're looking for the plan. I initally checked my phone but forgot that my wife is primary. Nothing was showing on mine but sure enough, it was there on hers. Thanks for posting.

  • +1

Leave Spotify. Change to someone that just provides music streaming at high quality

    • Tidal ftw

      • Does it make a difference if you're just using bluetooth?

  • +1

Thank you for bringing this to our attention (those who have the option it seems)

  • +2

After all music streaming services jacked up prices I just hosted a mini PC with plexamp.

    Works really well.

I hear jellyfin is good also.

  • +1

Kudos to you drezy. Worked a treat.

  • +1

Ours was 23.99 for some reason but saved us some money! thanks!

    • Old price. Going to $27.99 in September…
