Switch from Your Existing Spotify Premium Family Plan to Basic Family Plan & Save $3/Month (Save $36/Year) @ Spotify

3991

As a Spotify Premium Family $23.99/month subscriber, I was looking at the available plans and discovered Basic Family which is exactly the same, without the 15 hours per month Audio Books access, which I never use anyway and is $3 cheaper at $20.99 a month. I promptly made the switch and the change will occur on my next billing cycle.

So I thought I'd share this to other subscribers who may not use Audio Books and want to save $36 a year!

Update: going by the comments on this deal, it appears Basic Family can only be seen and switched to by existing Spotify Premium Family subscribers or may be targeted to certain users ?

How to switch between Spotify Plans:

  1. Log in: Go to the Spotify website and log in to your account.
  2. Access Account Settings: Navigate to your account page.
  3. Manage your plan: Look for the "Manage your plan" or "Subscription" section, and click on "Change plan".
  4. Select your new plan: Browse the available options and choose the plan you want to switch to. This could be a different premium plan (like Duo or Family), or a downgrade to the Basic plan.
  5. Confirm and finalize: Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm your selection. Spotify will guide you through the process, which may include confirming your payment details or verifying your eligibility for certain plans.

Whilst this post will probs deleted, it's an awesome option for people to swap to this to save on something most people didn't realise they even had

It’s similar with YouTube Premium Lite.

The only thing you miss out on (over YouTube Premium) is background videos, YouTube Music, and it does include ads on Music Videos, with an $8/month saving.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/909321

      • +5

You also don't get downloads and background play (which is great if you listen to youtube music vids with screen off).

        • +1

I agree it’s not suitable for music. I have Apple Music, which has music videos so I don’t need YouTube for this.

        • Are you referring to the different YouTube versions?
For Spotify Family Premium -> Spotify Family Basic this doesn't seem to be what they are saying.
https://support.spotify.com/au/article/spotify-basic/ says that "Plan members each have their own accounts with offline and ad-free music listening".

      • +25

that sounds like a terrible downgrade

      • So what do you get? And why wouldn't you use Brave browser instead?

      • Not really a similar comparison. You lose 1 thing on the above deal, you lose a lot in this.

    • How many people knew you can get Spotify for FREE!

No need to sign up and pay for any plan

      • -1

For people whose time is not valuable.

      • -1

        Ads lol, f that

    • or just keep hoping from one free trial to the next :D

  • +6

Probably not a deal, but just switched over. Thanks for the tip!

  • +9

Thanks, didn't know it was an option!

    Thanks for the tip

Damn, no basic family plan in turkey

    • +1

      $4 still better than $20 ;)

      • Will, we could still have gotten a 10% discount

      • Do you know if this is still possible to do?

        • +1

I tried getting a family plan using that method recently but no joy - individual is fine tho.

          • @harro112: I've had it for more than a year, i think. My method is to create a completely new Gmail account in turkey, and then creating a new User on my android phone where i make that account the primary (and only) one, so that all payments will default to it (you create android user like you have different users in windows, with their own files and apps). Using a vpn to connect to Turkey, i sign up for Spotify, and when i have to pay, i set payment to go through gpay linked to my completely new turkey account, and with an aus ccard (i use UpBank). I can then switch back to my normal Android user account.

I then invite family members who need to switch their spotify account to turkey first (via vpn) and then they can join the family plan.

I get charged monthly the Turkish lira rate and my bank converts it to aud.

So far there has only been one time where all other family members where removed from the plan automatically (except the main account for the family plan linked to my Google turkey gmail), but i just had to invite them one by one again

      • Hmm I was under the impression nothing there works anymore. Interesting

  • I didn't even know it was an option. 😲

I can only see the $23.99 plan ????

Not technically a bargain sure but please don't remove this post mods! it's super useful! Thanks OP

    • What is technically a bargain?

  • No Basic Family Plan in Australia

    • +4

It is below premium family on the account page which is a bit deceptive.

        • +1

Yes it is, if you're logged into an account with Premium Family which, as it's only available if you have Premium Family, makes total sense.

          • +4

@banana365: As much as it hurts, i have the agree with JV. I am on a Premium Family plan for $23.99. When going to the change plan, i see Premium Family as my current subscription, but no Family basic, only Premium Individual, Student and Duo.

  • I don't see an option for Basic family for me :(

    • "Basic is available for previously existing Premium subscribers. Eligible subscribers will see Basic as an available plan on their account page."

        • Eligibility is unclear, some people only see it when they have an active standard family plan, and only via the web. Other, former users see it.

But it’s documented on their website as rolled out to Australia and UK.

Oh and if you have previously subscribed to basic and cancelled you can’t get it back.

          Can’t use iOS billing either

    • +1

I don't see any of the Basic plan either. Tried both from App and Website.
Only Premium Family, Duo, Individual, Student.
      I'm using Spotify Australia.

        https://support.spotify.com/au/article/spotify-basic/
        Some contradicting wording

. Basic is available for previously existing Premium subscribers. Eligible subscribers will see Basic as an available plan on their account page.
. If you cancel your Basic plan, it’s not possible to resubscribe to it.
. Basic plans won’t include monthly audiobook listening time, but audiobooks are available to subscribers as one-time purchases.

. If you don’t see Basic as an available plan in your account, you’re currently not eligible.
. Basic plans aren’t available for Premium Student and Duo/Family plan members.
. When Premium Family/Duo managers switch to the Basic subscription, their existing plan members automatically carry over to the Basic plan.
. Other Premium features relating to non music content may not be available on Basic plans.

    Aren't you guys in Turkey?

    • -2

I doubt it, it is only 9am there…

    • Nah, flew to India. Had to take individual flights though, they no longer offer a family pass.

  • +1

Worked for me! I am an existing family premium user and just downgraded with no issues at all

    Thanks OP!

  • +1

    Thankyou for the heads-up ☺️

  • +3

Thanks - did the same for Duo, saving me a massive $2/month. That audiobook feature is stupid.

    • its very distracting to have it all in your face when you open the app

  • +3

Worked like a dream! Aussie account. Thank you OP!

  • +1

I did this last week - I use it for podcasts and music, no time for audio books. good saving!

    Thank you for sharing.

Can I also live in Turkey with Spotify family?

      • Also a payment visa or mastercard.

    • +1

Yes you can, my whole family and i moved to Turkey over a year ago

      • -3

        How's the weather ?

      • +1

My family got deported from Turkey. Had to apply for individual 12mo refugee status in India. How have you managed to stay?

I was told they no longer allow family conversion therapy?

  • +1

    Thanks

  • Get Tidal, cheaper in some countries.
Is Spotify ever going to offer lossless audio (cd quality)?

  • +2

No option for me. But makes sense, I ain't no basic 💅✨

  • +1

    Legend, worked for me !

  • +3

    Spotify have audio books? 😅

  • +3

cheers @drezy, worked for me , I didn't need audiobooks.
A deal for me, probably would have missed this in the forums

  • +1

Thanks just update my plan and save $3 per month.

  • +1

    Legend - thank you!

  • I actually use the spotify audiobooks when I'm out of audible credits and waiting for the next audible deal to pop up on Ozbargain!

    • Torrents and Plex AMP work well, just be sure to enable “resume” in your Plex library manager. Off by default for audio.

  • +3

    Worked for me.
    $3 is $3.

  • I just helped a friend get it from an overseas bank account and all he pays $39/year

    • which country? How?
      thank you

  • Does any spotify plan have unlimited, or atleast more than 15 hours, of audiobook playtime?

  • +3

Quick and simple update to save me 36 bucks a year.
    Thanks OP.

  • +2

Great deal! I didnt know about this. It should NOT be in forum's

  • +2

Thanks OP, I was not aware of this. Was annoyed when they bumped the price and sold it to me by giving me access to audiobooks I did not ask for.

  • There is also Basic Duo - similar to basic family with $2 less and no access to audiobooks

  • -1

A real Ozbargainer would just move to India or Turkey where the best streaming deals are 😉

    • +2

I used to be but got deported and haven't found a way back

      • You need to use gift cards and not your own card

    • or use ublock?

  • Ppl don’t like their 15hours audiobook listening for $3 extra?

  • +1

This latest AI dj BS is the straw that broke the camels back for me, I’m off to Apple Music. Spotify have done nothing to improve their music quality in years.
Business model over the past 5 years is to shove crap at you that you were getting for free elsewhere but charge you extra in the process all while making you listen to adds on podcast and locking some podcasts behind paywalls

  • +1

Was there for me and I switched. Thanks!

  • +2

Heading suggests Spotify costs $36/year. Needs an edit.

  • +1

Thanks a bunch, just did it and it worked for me.

  • +1

Great advice, thanks for the post! Just made the switch…. now what to do with that $36 a year that I'm saving? :)

  • I’m paying $4 a month via Turkey. This is too expensive lmao.

    • In same. terestingly not many have been successful travelling to Turkey.

  • Manage subscription page is down? App doesn't allow to change plans either. I can see the Basic plan

    • +1

No, I literally just did it then.

Cheers OP. $36 a year back in my skyrocket.

  • I use the audio book feature all the time but it sucks its only 15 hours. I wish it carried over if you didn't use the hours.

  • -1

does Apple One Premium for $50 per month actually start to make sense -

share with up to 5 family members
    2TB of icloud
    Apple TV+
    Apple Music
    Apple Arcade
    Apple News
    Apple Fitness+

    • it's a pretty good deal with all that

    • I dunno, I actually pay for 2TB icloud and ATV+ for my family of four. It's like $26?/month. I guess it's a good rate if you previously bought all those products at full price?

  • +1

I've been enjoying the audiobooks tbh, but still good to know!

  • +1

Thanks for this..savings is savings 🙏

  • No one here with Android + APK?

    • It doesn't work anymore.

      • Are those the modded clients for Android? What a shame they no longer work

        • +1

Yep, Spotify caught onto it. It was working perfectly for years.

  • +1

Thanks for this! Never even knew!

  • I pay $3.08 per month for Premium Duo (Spotify: Music and Podcasts) via Turkey ($1.50 per account for me and my partner).
