IMPORTANT UPDATE 26 JULY 2023: RE Method 2

OlduBil: "Transfers from foreign bank accounts to our bank accounts in Turkey are not possible".

  • OlduBil is no longer accepting deposits/transfers from foreign bank accounts. Please DO NOT make any transfers into OlduBil (i.e. your Türkiye Mastercard) until further notice!

  • If you already have the funds in OlduBil from a previous transfer, you are free to continue with Method 2. For those wanting to top up your Türkiye Mastercard, please DO NOT initiate any transfers into OlduBil from Wise or Revolut until I have a new update

  • For those who do not have funds in OlduBil and wish to utilise Method 2, I'm afraid this is no longer possible at this point in time. Every transfer done is at your own risk!

Background:

Modern problems require modern solutions. Like Xbox Game Passes, Youtube, Netflix, Discord, Google One, Microsoft 365, relocating (virtually of course) to Turkey is usually the best option, with some methods saving hundreds or thousands of dollars each year added up. The processes below are very easy, just take it slow and you'll get there! Just remember you'll be saving hundreds at the end of the day.

Due to a price increase by Spotify worldwide, my previous guide has expired. But no worries, this guide is now better than ever, and combines the two methods together (Google Pay for those who want to use Australian Cards, or Virtual Türkiye Mastercard for those who can't do the Google Pay method) as well as providing more information on extra plans and family systems. There will be some screenshots throughout the sign-up process for OlduBil(see screenshots in the instructions section) from previous testing - and yes, I can confirm the validity of these methods because I don't spend money for nothing. Most important thing - Türkiye is still very cheap!

Thank you so much for all your support and previous comments (I love reading them)! Any comments, concerns, suggestions or feedback are welcome :)

Instructions – Method #1 via Google Pay (Android Required) – If you want to use your Australian debit/credit card

Note: If you currently subscribe to Google One or any other Google services via Türkiye, then you may already have a Türkiye payment profile in your Google account. If this is the case, you may not need to do Part 1 at all (go straight to Part 2).

If you have an existing Google account and don't want to create a new Google account, simply add a new Türkiye payment profile into your Google account (not ideal for Google accounts where the sole user is an Android user or the family system consists of Android users - see why in the notes section of this post. You can create a new payment profile by following these steps: go to https://pay.google.com/gp/w/u/0/home/settings and clicking the pen icon next to "Country/Region" and a link to create a new profile should pop up. You can then add details for the Turkish profile (If needed, use a fake address generator to obtain a random Turkey address).

If you don't have an Android device, and would still like to use your Australian debit/credit card via Google Pay, consider this BlueStacks method by @langh using a PC.

Part 1 – Creating a new Google account

  1. Create a new Google account on your phone.

  2. Delete your Google Play Store cache (this may not be required). If you don't know how to, please see Google's instructions.

  3. Select your new Google account in the Google Play Store app to switch over from your personal account or add it in if it's not there (to do this, click on your top right icon, then click the dropdown next to your account email, then click "Add another account"). Make sure the selected account is your new Google account.

  4. Add a new payment method and select "Turkey" as the country (to do this, click on your top right icon again, then click "Payments and Subscriptions", then click "Payment methods"). If needed, use a fake address generator to obtain a random Turkey address for the payment profile. You can use your Australian debit or credit card (or any card as you wish) and best to use a card with no international transaction fees (Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees).

Part 2 – Subscribing to Spotify Premium

  1. Boot up the Spotify app and click "sign up" or "log in" with VPN off. If you don't have the Spotify app, download it from the Google Play Store. See link here.

Can I sign up with my Australian Spotify account? - Yes! Simply log in (make sure your current subscription, if any, is cancelled).

  2. Turn on VPN and connect to a server in Türkiye (see Notes section for suggestions) and leave it on for the remainder of the steps below.

  3. Boot up the Spotify app again. Click on the premium tab on the bottom right of the home screen. Select the plan you want. Scroll down to the bottom and make sure the country is set to Türkiye. If it's Australia or another country, click the dropdown and change it to Türkiye.

Alternatively, go to your Spotify account settings on a web browser and check what country is selected. If it's Türkiye, you're good to go. If it's Australia or another country, click the dropdown and change it to Türkiye. However, you still have to double check on the app again on step 3.

Country dropdown box greyed out? - I bet you have a current Premium subscription running? If so, this will have to finish. You can't make changes to your location while Premium is running.

  4. Click on "Google Pay". Complete the Google Pay confirmation prompt to subscribe. Your debit/credit card should already be preloaded (add one if not). If requested for an address, please use your Australian address (new Spotify accounts - family plan sign-ups).

If you get an error, trying clicking the "change plan" option and re-select your plan. Muck around with it a little… Turn VPN on or off etc.

  5. Fly back home and turn off your VPN. YOU'RE DONE! WOOO! Enjoy your savings :)

Part 3 - Family Members (Family plan only)

  1. On the main account (plan manager), go to: https://www.spotify.com/tr-tr/account/family/ to obtain an invite link. Ensure the address listed is your Australian address (DO NOT use a Türkiye address)

  2. Get a family member, friend, bf, gf, or whatever person to accept that link. When requested, enter in the same address as listed in Step 1.

Error? "You need to live at the same address? It looks like you’re trying to join Premium Family from a different country. Premium Family is only available for family members that live together. Try again when you’re at the same address."

Simple solution - go to the relevant Spotify account on a web browser and check what country is selected. If it's Türkiye, you're good to go. If it's Australia or another country, connect to a VPN server in Türkiye, then refresh the page, click the dropdown and change it to Türkiye. Accept the invite again and it should work. You can turn off VPN after this.

Instructions – Method #2 (If you want to use your Virtual Türkiye Mastercard)

Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard REQUIRED

Please read the following instructions carefully. If you already have a Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard via OlduBil, proceed with the following instructions. If you do not have a Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard, STOP HERE and see how to get one here in the instructions section (Part 1 and Part 2): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/784047. I'm in the process of making a wiki page on the Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard via OlduBil, so stay tuned!

Notes: The Spotify sign up pages may be in Turkish (which is easily navigatable if you have some common sense). Feel free to translate the page to English otherwise.

Part 1 – Subscribing to Spotify Premium

  1. Log in to Spotify (VPN off), or make a new account (VPN off).

  2. Turn on VPN and connect to a server in Türkiye (see Notes section for suggestions) and leave it on for the remainder of the steps below.

  3. Go to the Spotify Premium plans page.

  4. Scroll down and select the plan you want. Proceed to pay with your Turkey-based Virtual Mastercard. If requested for an address, please use your Australian address (new Spotify accounts - family plan sign-ups).

  5. Fly back home and turn off your VPN. YOU'RE DONE! WOOO! Enjoy your savings :)

HELP POINT: Because the popup payment windown cannot be translated to English, here are screenshots of the process in the following order: (1), (2), (3)

Part 2 – Family Members (Family plan only)

ISP Notes (Important)

  • If you currently have a Spotify Premium subscription, simply cancel the subscription and you'll be able to resubscribe via Türkiye. If the current subscription is a family plan, simply cancel the subscription and once you resubscribe via Türkiye (do not let the subscription expire), the entire family system will remain intact and no futher changes will be necessary.

  • Most VPN services will connect to Türkiye, unlike India. Those include NordVPN, Private Internet Access (PIA), free Windscribe Chrome extension (recommended), free UrbanVPN Chrome extension (recommended), ExpressVPN, etc. If one doesn't work, use another VPN.

    • If you're using Windscribe and it shows different currencies: keep turning the windscribe on and off. Each time you don't get TL, turn it off and on, then refresh the Spotify sign up page. You'll eventually land on TL. Go to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ each time you turn it off/on and see if you land on Istanbul.

FAQ

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I listen to Spotify?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you use Spotify Premium. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Spotify without a VPN.

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Spotify account, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely!

Q: Is signing up to Spotify Turkey going to affect my Spotify library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Spotify catalogue/recommendations may be weird with brand new regional music, etc… but your Spotify catalogue will adjust to what you’re listening to and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?
A: Don't worry, there really isn't any tax you need to worry about.

Doesn't give me the google pay option on the spotify app on android?

        • Are you using an existing Google account, or a new Turkish one?

          • @I Smell Pennies: existing with a new turkish payment profile

            • @CalmLemons: Someone below said if you create a new Turkish Google account, it should pop up.

              • +1

@I Smell Pennies: just popped up now after a few tries of closing all apps and opening again. android and google sync probably

                thanks.

also had to change the google play store country to the turkish payment profile - not sure if i'm meant to do that as you gave the warning above - but just a backup account anyway

                • @CalmLemons: @CalmLemons perfect, great to hear!

If it's a backup account don't worry too much.

        • If anyone else is getting stuck - try this to get Google Pay to come up as an option

They say licensing issues is holding it up, but I don't buy that considering the other platforms that have lossless without an extra charge.

Can I do this whilst already subscribed or does it need to lapse first?

    • it needs to lapse first

I am impressed @I Smell Pennies ! However, to me it looks too complicated and I just open a new Microsoft account every 3 months, click for 3 days and get another 3 months Spotify for free.

  • +1

A dumb question. I guess many people have already got YouTube Premium which provides YouTube music subscription, what’s the benefit of owing both?
Since I only have AirPod Pro as my headphone I probably won’t get much difference if Spotify does provide better sound quality? And I don’t use much podcast as well.

    • +1

I also have YouTube Music, and the only reason I'm even considering this is because the Spotify watch on WearOS is so much better than the YouTube Music app. /facepalm Google fail

    • +1

If you've invested into the Spotify platform with lots of created and curated play lists etc. Or if you want to avoid vesting too much info with Google.

If you're like me and don't care then go to YouTube music.

Is there any comment on how Amazon music compares?

    • +1

I've used YouTube Music for about a year (although I got Premium mostly to watch ad-free videos on my TV), then I re-subscribed to Spotify last month.

I feel the UI for the mobile app is too clunky/glitchy with my car bluetooth and the playlists/recommendations are significantly better on Spotify. For $3/month it's a no brainer for me!

    • +1

Youtube music is absolutely garbage. I use it maybe 1-10 times a year. Spotify I use maybe at least 10 times per day.

      • Thanks for your comment which contributes nothing to my question.

        • +4

I have both, and Spotify UI is much more cleaner. I do like their annual Wrapped feature. If you have a Garmin, the app is better than the YouTube music one.

          • @cute as duck: These days I tend to use Apple Music, simply because it offers lossless streaming and Dolby Atmos, which works amazingly with my Sonos setup. But you're right, the Spotify UI is amazing, it's way better than Apple Music.

    • Devices that are not phones or computers. I have AV receivers which will only work with Spotify or Tidal, those being the services that were around at the time. I have other devices which will only play via Spotify or Amazon Music. Spotify is common across all devices which stream music, pretty much.

    • +1

I use both, it adds variety to discovering new music. I find youtube autoplay to be better in introducing new tracks, sometimes spotify gets a bit lost in translation. However personally speaking the spotify UI is lovely in comparison! I use spotify 90% of the time. I bought the annual subs for both using this deal so its no sweat

    • So for me owning both YT Music and Spotify, this is what I observe so far
      - some songs are not available on YT Music
      - In the Apple car play, Spotify allows you to navigate to the album directly on the car portal but not YT Music

  • If i cancel a family plan, can i then sign up again and have all the family members added automatically?
Or do i have to do it manually?

    • +5

I just did this, they were added back in automatically. Did not impact the current setup at all once resubscribed.

      • hey mate, did you signed up for a family plan via method 1 or method 2?

        • Method 2 for me. Already had OlduBil setup with some residual TL on it from the XB Game Pass method.

        • Based on comments I have a feeling it only works for those doing method 2

      • +1

I did this too and all family members were added back in.

Do you know if family members need to change country ro Turkey as well? Then what address do they use? When will it ask them?

        • +1

All addresses should be Australian. Especially the one on the Spotify family manager.

      • Do i have to wait for it to fully expire? Says ill go free on 8/7/23 (Assuming thats US formatting its the 7th of August)

      • I can't change my country during subscription (which it says above is a thing), did you wait for you sub to expire and then resubscribe or were you able to do this without waiting?

        • +1

I have signed up to this with an existing family sub. I am still based in aus as well as all the other members. If you cancel, you current, don't let it expire and then sign up with turkish payment, the following month, all users will be in there as normal without changing anything

        • +1

Based on comments I have a feeling it only works for those doing method 2

      • Did you have to let the subscription fully expire? I cancelled mine and it says "Your plan will turn into a Spotify Free subscription on 08/11/2023". I tried to renew following the steps and it still shows AU pricing and doesn't allow me to change my country in my profile.

        • +1

In this case, you'll have to let your Premium subscription completely lapse, and then it will allow you to change your profile country, and thus give you Turkish prices. @DvApps

          • @I Smell Pennies: Got it, thanks. Would that also mean I have to re invite all the family members?

            • @DvApps: Sadly yes. Which method are you doing? @DvApps

              • @I Smell Pennies: I tried both methods

                • +1

@DvApps: Im just gonna wait for it to expire. I already have an India payment method setup that i use for Youtube premium. WIll use that for Spotify

    • I had an AU family plan set up. I didn't have to wait until the subscription expired. You cancel the plan, connect VPN, open the Turkish page https://www.spotify.com/tr-en/account/family/ and re-sub (make sure you see Turkish pricing)
After this, your account should say something like 'Your next payment is 64.99 TRY on (your next renewal date)'. Your family members remain intact. So, it doesn't matter at what point you cancel and re-sub.
I ended up cancelling the family plan and went with method 1. I used one of the old Spotify accounts (no active plan), subscribed to a Family plan via Google Play (I had a Turkish profile from a YouTube deal), and then invited all members.
With this method, all family members had to change their country and address to the same as the organiser.
It was a bit of a hassle but method 1 is much better as you don't have to transfer money.
Also, none of the family members had to wait until the plan expires as the family members can change the country to Turkey immediately after being kicked out of the Aus plan.

      Thanks, hopefully this helps someone!

    • Thanks. I have done everything and thanks for the guide as I didn't have an Android device. I get the option to pay with Google Pay but I keep getting this error that Google Pay purchases are not supported in your country. I upgraded Google Drive to 200G using Google Pay and that worked. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Any help is appreciated.

      • maybe try the VPN.lat app and connect to turkey. I had to make a new google account for it to work.

        • vpn.lat has been really slow, instead, I am using Windscribe and that works as I get the Turkish prices.

    • Dear Cocochicken,

I did this myself, even created a brand new google account with a turk payment profile, and followed the method you very kindly made so easy to understand. I initially had the same problem as the other commenter before following your method. But alas, even after using rev and wise, I get to clicking on pay with google, the payment screen shows up but now it's giving me the error of "Your transaction can't be completed. To continue this transaction, use a different payment instrument, or contact us"

      Any suggestions?
      :(

Legend. Recently had a family plan, cancelled that and set up method 2 before expiration - all working fine.

  • Amazing, might give it a go! While we're on the topic, can you guys recommend a reliable, affordable VPN? I don't have one at the moment and I am looking to get one.

    Cheers

    • Windscribe is free

Urban VPN is free (works really good)

      Nord VPN works (paid)

Worked like a charm, thank you again so much. Game Pass and now Spotify using the WISE > OlduBil method and paying by card.

  • I've never used this method before, but can Revolut be used instead of OlduBil?

    • +1

i use revolut card to pay my monthly spotify sub on this deal :)

      • Awesome, thanks mate

      • how did you proceed ? I paid first month with Oldubil and would like to switch to Revolut but when I try adding it it says "Bank card is not from your subscription country" cheers

        • Same issue with any card including changing country of wise account to Turkey and google payment profile.
Tried to adapt this guide but It's all in javascript I think.
          https://imgur.com/a/W5wZxHT

      • How did you change it to your revolut card? It won't accept it i thought? Do you load TRY to it? Or does it automatically convert. Unless you are doing it through google pay?

Perfect timing. Just got an email literally an hour ago student premium is going up from $5.99 to $6.99 from next month. Which also coincides with me reaching the cap on number of years (4) you can have a student premium account.

    I just paid INR 1189 (~AUD 21.5) for a 12-month subscription through India.

    • So its same !! That's good to know

    • How did you pay?

I'm doing this via my android device.
i had a family premium but cancelled it (it's due to expire 8th august)
do i have to wait until after 8th august to do method #1?
at the moment, when i log into the spotify app with turkey as the selected country (with vpn on), the language is in turkish when i try to change plans on the change plans web page but the prices are still in AU (i,e AU $20,99 is shown) but the rest of the page is in Turkish

    • Yes I believe you need to wait. Mine is also showing Turkish language and AUD pricing

      • Same here. Doing my head in. So I need to wait til next month when the sub ends?

        • +3

Yeah it's so weird because the instruction mentions you can cancel the subscription and it should work when you try to renew but it doesn't for me.

When I try it via my laptop/computer browser I do see the offer in turkish prices when on a vpn but can't pay using Google Pay

    • +1

If going method 1, you cannot change the country to Turkey until the plan expires, so you have to wait until then. Then, subscribe to a family plan using method 1. However, you have to invite all members back. They also have to change the country and the address. If you do not want to wait and you don't have much saved in your Spotify profile, create a Google account, subscribe to a Turkish plan then invite all members. All members had to be kicked out of Aus plan to be able to change the country and accept the invitation.
If going method 2, you can cancel Aus plan any time, connect VPN, open Turkish pricing page and resub. This way, all members do not need to change the country and address and remain intact. The plan will renew on your usual renewal date but with Turkish pricing instead of Aus.
