IMPORTANT UPDATE 26 JULY 2023: RE Method 2

OlduBil: "Transfers from foreign bank accounts to our bank accounts in Turkey are not possible".

  • OlduBil is no longer accepting deposits/transfers from foreign bank accounts. Please DO NOT make any transfers into OlduBil (i.e. your Türkiye Mastercard) until further notice!

  • If you already have the funds in OlduBil from a previous transfer, you are free to continue with Method 2. For those wanting to top up your Türkiye Mastercard, please DO NOT initiate any transfers into OlduBil from Wise or Revolut until I have a new update

  • For those who do not have funds in OlduBil and wish to utilise Method 2, I'm afraid this is no longer possible at this point in time. Every transfer done is at your own risk!

Background:

Modern problems require modern solutions. Like Xbox Game Passes, Youtube, Netflix, Discord, Google One, Microsoft 365, relocating (virtually of course) to Turkey is usually the best option, with some methods saving hundreds or thousands of dollars each year added up. The processes below are very easy, just take it slow and you'll get there! Just remember you'll be saving hundreds at the end of the day.

Due to a price increase by Spotify worldwide, my previous guide has expired. But no worries, this guide is now better than ever, and combines the two methods together (Google Pay for those who want to use Australian Cards, or Virtual Türkiye Mastercard for those who can't do the Google Pay method) as well as providing more information on extra plans and family systems. There will be some screenshots throughout the sign-up process for OlduBil(see screenshots in the instructions section) from previous testing - and yes, I can confirm the validity of these methods because I don't spend money for nothing. Most important thing - Türkiye is still very cheap!

Thank you so much for all your support and previous comments (I love reading them)! Any comments, concerns, suggestions or feedback are welcome :)

Instructions – Method #1 via Google Pay (Android Required) – If you want to use your Australian debit/credit card

Note: If you currently subscribe to Google One or any other Google services via Türkiye, then you may already have a Türkiye payment profile in your Google account. If this is the case, you may not need to do Part 1 at all (go straight to Part 2).

If you have an existing Google account and don't want to create a new Google account, simply add a new Türkiye payment profile into your Google account (not ideal for Google accounts where the sole user is an Android user or the family system consists of Android users - see why in the notes section of this post. You can create a new payment profile by following these steps: go to https://pay.google.com/gp/w/u/0/home/settings and clicking the pen icon next to "Country/Region" and a link to create a new profile should pop up. You can then add details for the Turkish profile (If needed, use a fake address generator to obtain a random Turkey address).

If you don't have an Android device, and would still like to use your Australian debit/credit card via Google Pay, consider this BlueStacks method by @langh using a PC.

Part 1 – Creating a new Google account

  1. Create a new Google account on your phone.

  2. Delete your Google Play Store cache (this may not be required). If you don't know how to, please see Google's instructions.

  3. Select your new Google account in the Google Play Store app to switch over from your personal account or add it in if it's not there (to do this, click on your top right icon, then click the dropdown next to your account email, then click "Add another account"). Make sure the selected account is your new Google account.

  4. Add a new payment method and select "Turkey" as the country (to do this, click on your top right icon again, then click "Payments and Subscriptions", then click "Payment methods"). If needed, use a fake address generator to obtain a random Turkey address for the payment profile. You can use your Australian debit or credit card (or any card as you wish) and best to use a card with no international transaction fees (Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees).

Part 2 – Subscribing to Spotify Premium

  1. Boot up the Spotify app and click "sign up" or "log in" with VPN off. If you don't have the Spotify app, download it from the Google Play Store. See link here.

Can I sign up with my Australian Spotify account? - Yes! Simply log in (make sure your current subscription, if any, is cancelled).

  2. Turn on VPN and connect to a server in Türkiye (see Notes section for suggestions) and leave it on for the remainder of the steps below.

  3. Boot up the Spotify app again. Click on the premium tab on the bottom right of the home screen. Select the plan you want. Scroll down to the bottom and make sure the country is set to Türkiye. If it's Australia or another country, click the dropdown and change it to Türkiye.

Alternatively, go to your Spotify account settings on a web browser and check what country is selected. If it's Türkiye, you're good to go. If it's Australia or another country, click the dropdown and change it to Türkiye. However, you still have to double check on the app again on step 3.

Country dropdown box greyed out? - I bet you have a current Premium subscription running? If so, this will have to finish. You can't make changes to your location while Premium is running.

  4. Click on "Google Pay". Complete the Google Pay confirmation prompt to subscribe. Your debit/credit card should already be preloaded (add one if not). If requested for an address, please use your Australian address (new Spotify accounts - family plan sign-ups).

If you get an error, trying clicking the "change plan" option and re-select your plan. Muck around with it a little… Turn VPN on or off etc.

  5. Fly back home and turn off your VPN. YOU'RE DONE! WOOO! Enjoy your savings :)

Part 3 - Family Members (Family plan only)

  1. On the main account (plan manager), go to: https://www.spotify.com/tr-tr/account/family/ to obtain an invite link. Ensure the address listed is your Australian address (DO NOT use a Türkiye address)

  2. Get a family member, friend, bf, gf, or whatever person to accept that link. When requested, enter in the same address as listed in Step 1.

Error? "You need to live at the same address? It looks like you’re trying to join Premium Family from a different country. Premium Family is only available for family members that live together. Try again when you’re at the same address."

Simple solution - go to the relevant Spotify account on a web browser and check what country is selected. If it's Türkiye, you're good to go. If it's Australia or another country, connect to a VPN server in Türkiye, then refresh the page, click the dropdown and change it to Türkiye. Accept the invite again and it should work. You can turn off VPN after this.

Instructions – Method #2 (If you want to use your Virtual Türkiye Mastercard)

Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard REQUIRED

Please read the following instructions carefully. If you already have a Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard via OlduBil, proceed with the following instructions. If you do not have a Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard, STOP HERE and see how to get one here in the instructions section (Part 1 and Part 2): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/784047. I'm in the process of making a wiki page on the Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard via OlduBil, so stay tuned!

Notes: The Spotify sign up pages may be in Turkish (which is easily navigatable if you have some common sense). Feel free to translate the page to English otherwise.

Part 1 – Subscribing to Spotify Premium

  1. Log in to Spotify (VPN off), or make a new account (VPN off).

  2. Turn on VPN and connect to a server in Türkiye (see Notes section for suggestions) and leave it on for the remainder of the steps below.

  3. Go to the Spotify Premium plans page.

  4. Scroll down and select the plan you want. Proceed to pay with your Turkey-based Virtual Mastercard. If requested for an address, please use your Australian address (new Spotify accounts - family plan sign-ups).

  5. Fly back home and turn off your VPN. YOU'RE DONE! WOOO! Enjoy your savings :)

HELP POINT: Because the popup payment windown cannot be translated to English, here are screenshots of the process in the following order: (1), (2), (3)

Part 2 – Family Members (Family plan only)

ISP Notes (Important)

  • If you currently have a Spotify Premium subscription, simply cancel the subscription and you'll be able to resubscribe via Türkiye. If the current subscription is a family plan, simply cancel the subscription and once you resubscribe via Türkiye (do not let the subscription expire), the entire family system will remain intact and no futher changes will be necessary.

  • Most VPN services will connect to Türkiye, unlike India. Those include NordVPN, Private Internet Access (PIA), free Windscribe Chrome extension (recommended), free UrbanVPN Chrome extension (recommended), ExpressVPN, etc. If one doesn't work, use another VPN.

    • If you're using Windscribe and it shows different currencies: keep turning the windscribe on and off. Each time you don't get TL, turn it off and on, then refresh the Spotify sign up page. You'll eventually land on TL. Go to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ each time you turn it off/on and see if you land on Istanbul.

FAQ

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I listen to Spotify?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you use Spotify Premium. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Spotify without a VPN.

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Spotify account, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely!

Q: Is signing up to Spotify Turkey going to affect my Spotify library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Spotify catalogue/recommendations may be weird with brand new regional music, etc… but your Spotify catalogue will adjust to what you’re listening to and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?
A: Don't worry, there really isn't any tax you need to worry about.

      • yes I know - but how do they change their account to Turkey? They only have Australia in their account country drop-down

        • login to their account and then turn on your VPN, then click edit profile and it should be there

          • @BloodRanger: oh so they need to use a vpn temporarily too. The instructions don’t mention that whatsoever

            • @deal-fomo: i believe so at least that's how I got mine to work

            • +2

@deal-fomo: Sorry, I forgot to put that VPN is needed to change the country. I will edit that right away. Thanks for flagging both of you :)

              • +1

@I Smell Pennies: thanks! Curious to know - for people claiming they could convert an existing aus family with aus members into turkey, without disrupting family members nor requiring them to change country - how does that work? does that really work?

                • +1

@deal-fomo: If you cancel your current family subscription (all family members still have Premium until the end of the billing date), and wait a few hours, the system will let you resubscribe (via Turkey of course) and the family system remains intact and thus no futher changes are needed.

                  • @I Smell Pennies: will they have issues once the aus plan “switches” to turkey after the billing date?

just curious how spotify would allow a family to exist in a state of mixed account countries

                    • @deal-fomo: Should not have any issues, this is what several people did last month.

                      • @I Smell Pennies: thanks for the info. So i suppose if I’m starting a new family plan, it would be beneficial to do a single month of australian family, so everyone can keep their accounts australian, then switch myself to turkey for a turkey family plan?

                        • @deal-fomo: It's up to you on how you want to do this. If for some reason whatever you do screws up the family system when you sign up to Turkey Family plan, just re-invite them back in (I had to start a new plan and re-invite everyone in). I don't think everyone can keep their accounts Australian.

It's hard to investigate everyone's individual issues and problems while signing up to this deal (as much as I'd want to).

                      • @I Smell Pennies: I sadly had to re-add all my family plan members as I was paying through g-pay, had to wait till it expired before being able to resubscribe

                        • @BloodRanger: Hmmm, maybe the trick only works when paying using the Turkish mastercard.

                        • @BloodRanger: good to know - i won’t bother with the aus trick then - i’m paying through gpay

  • I have followed the instructions and can get to the subscribe page but when I click subscribe an error message pops up saying i need to use a different payment instrument. I have tried a HSBC debit card. Interestingly i get a message from the bank saying i have paid a 2 TL temporary hold using my debit card but still can't subscribe…..curious what other credit cards people have had success with?

    • Are you using Method 1 or Method 2?

      • Method 1. Anyway I just contacted google and they said they will look into it and come back within 4 to 24 hours. Will report back if that solves it. Thanks!

    • Same here :(
Cant seem to figure it out

    • same, tried via bluestacks/spare phone, waiting for update, any chance it has been patched?

  • Teşekkürler

  • Is anyone studying in Turkey who would like to help a brother get Spotify student?

    • I don't think you need to be studying in Turkey. If you study here I think it's sufficient.

      • I already have Prime Music, Tidal HiFi, YouTube, and now Spotify. I feel like student package is all I get afford. I really like their play lists.

I guess I have to enrol as a student here lol

        • Yeah as ISP mentioned, you can work with Aus Student verified.. not sure what'll happen when I need to re verify but thats a future problem.

  • google pay doesnt show up. what should i do?

    • existing Google account or a new one?

      • brand new sir

        • what should i do?

  • Anyone have a solution to not being able to change country to Turkey on an existing account not on premium? In the profile page the box is greyed out and I cannot click on it despite being on VPN and no longer being on premium. I had this issue with other accounts which i resolved by signing up for a month of individual Turkey Spotify Premium through Oldubil (which changes country to Turkey) and then accepting family invite, but this has become a costly workaround due to the need to waste a months worth of subscription per family member.

    • You think it's a VPN problem?

      • I used windscribe on PC and android app. It works fine when subscribing to premium for Turkey but not when just editing profile country for some reason.

        • +1

Solved via PM. @DOGGYWOWWOW still has an active subscription hence cannot change the profile country until the subscription has lapsed.

  • Anyone getting "Google Play purchases are not supported in your country" error?

    • Yep. Cant seem to pass this error :(

      • turning OFF my Private DNS worked for me! I think it was messing with the VPN. Might help others if it was added to the post

        • also getting this error. turning off private DNS didn't work for me :( — did you go through the whole process again?

          • @TheBargainFather: Yes. Also removed all google accounts other than the new account I set up with Indian payment profile.

            • @StayCheesy: what VPN are you using on your phone? … windscribe seems to be working for me but i cant get past this error so might try a different one. Also im signing up for a family plan not sure if that matters.

    • I'm starting to wonder if we are doing this wrong somehow. The guide state "Google Pay". The method/message I'm ending up with is "Continue with Google Play"

  • Awesome got 1 year sub for 20$

    • Can you able to see your plan on your mobile after logging in?

Mine says - "Something went wrong. Try again"

This process is hurting my brain a little. Is there any way to not have to re-add my family and not have their google profiles change location to turkiye?

  • Is this for android only?

  • Can anyone help me…..I am unable to add my Australian card details ???
Please call me on 0411348610 who has already successfully done and is pro in this…TIA

    • You can't. google pay is a bit iffy. Do the oldubil method but not sure if Oldubill is accepting international transfer anymore as when clicking deposit money it says: transfer from foreign bank accounts to our bacnk accounts in Turkey are not possible.

@I Smell Pennies does your oldubil app when you click deposit money it shows that too?

It's been 2 days since I've used revolut to transfer and money has not gone in yet. Tried Wise yesterday and see if money will go into my account. I hope it's just a delay and not just cut off foreign bank transfers :(

      • @NeoX

Hey there. Thanks for your comment. I can see the same thing on my end too. That's very concerning. I will make an update in the comments and in the post regarding this. I hope your money does go through, please keep me updated.

  • Is it possioble to convert an current Australian family plan full of members to turkish? Or do you need to start from scratch?

  • I signed up to Spotify a few nights ago (right before the price hike actually) using Oldubil;

Wise -> top up Oldubil via Vakifbank (nb don't use this anymore as Garanti is recommended); Surfshark vpn to Turkey -> Spotify -> Family plan - done! Took a while for the funds to arrive from Wise to Oldubil, but otherwise it was flawless. Highly recommend.

@I Smell Pennies 10/10 for the effort with this!

    IMPORTANT UPDATE 26 JULY 2023:

OlduBil: "Transfers from foreign bank accounts to our bank accounts in Turkey are not possible".

    • OlduBil is no longer accepting deposits/transfers from foreign bank accounts. Please DO NOT make any transfers into OlduBil (i.e. your Türkiye Mastercard) until further notice!

    • If you already have the funds in OlduBil from a previous transfer, you are free to continue with Method 2. For those wanting to top up your Türkiye Mastercard, please DO NOT initiate any transfers into OlduBil from Wise or Revolut until I have a new update

    • I made the transfer yesterday 4:30pm, still have not received funds in OlduBil… tho I copied the name straight from OlduBil which had the Turkish alphabet.. not sure if this is affecting the transfer.

    • Same here using Revolut to Oldubil and funds have yet to hit Oldubil. Current status is: "We need a bit more time to process your transfer…" Fingers crossed!

      • If you can, cancel the transfer ASAP.

        • I transferred money yesterday to Oldubil via wise and still didn't get it. Guessing this is the issue. Any work around?

        • I have had a conversation with live chat and most recent transfers cannot be cancelled. They are aware that the Turkish bank has been rejecting transfers and have been advised to check back in 5 days as the funds should be back in the Revolut account. Guess ill report back on Monday next week for anyone else thats in the same predicament.

          • @mnemonic9: I've just got an email from revolut saying that the money has been sent. Does this mean it'll still bounce back or is it gone?

      • If anyone’s figured out how to cancel Revolut transaction please let me know

        • Yeah both my Wise and Revolut had transfer but waiting for it to appear in Oldubil. Hopefully it'll appear else money in the wind :(

    • +1

Before reading this I sent Revolut > Garanti at 9:04am (today, 26/07) funds received at 4:16pm, in OlduBil when I checked at ~8pm,
Came up a couple of TRY short so pushed another transfer at 8:05pm - Revolut confirmed funds received by Garanti at 8:15pm

      Waiting on OlduBil to update.

      • Same my first transfer came through luckily, let me know if your second transfer comes in. Thanks

        • 2nd was done within the hour, no issues.

          • @in-place: Are you saying that you transferred to OlduBil and it came through?

    • +1

After realising this issue, I contacted OlduBil at [email protected] and told them the situation about my Wise transfer. They asked for a receipt of the transfer and my phone number, and the money appeared in my OlduBil account. The rest of the instructions were followed and now I don't have to explain why I cancelled my family's Spotify :)

    • This is not correct. I transfered today and yesterday money from my UK HSBC Global Money account to oldubil and both times the money was credited around 5 hours later on my card (use Denzibank)

  • Cheers mate. After Tidal price jack am back to Spotify. Already had Playstore Turkey account, all i had to do was turn on VPN and pay.

    • what vpn u use?

      • Vpn unlimited KeepSolid. There was deal years ago 14-20$ for lifetime.

  • Worked perfectly for me, many thanks OP!!!

  • +4

Tried to complete payment via Google Pay using the existing turkey payment profile but keep showing "Something went wrong" and your transaction can't be completed.

    • same boat - any resolution to this?

  • holy shit why the (profanity) oldubil being so difficult about foreign transfers?

  • A little bit confused - So you already have credit in Oldubil from previous deal (monthly Spotify) - can you still successfully top up from Revolut? Thanks.

  • Verified worked.
    - just make sure you clear cache and create a new account turkey google account and follow the steps.
    Thanks to the poster.

  • +3

I did everything, also got the option to pay with Google Pay but I try to pay I keep getting the error that Google Play purchases are not supported in your country.

  • What is the significance of a new Google account?

  • managed to get this to work through bluestack. just have a question, is it possible to invite someone without having them to change their country/region to turkey?

ie, my country/region = turkey. address = au. invite person A, person A enters AU address, but can only join if person A change country region from AU to turkey.

  • Haha f**k.

No wonder my transfer from Wise, last night, didn't work.

    Bye bye $$$$$$$$$$$

  • I don't have an Android mobile. Can I still get it to work through Google Play/Google Pay and Spotify website in Chrome/Edge (windows computer based)?

  • -1

Have a transferwise acc they give you virtual card.
Add funds via payID no foreign fee direct conversion

    • This doesn't work, the card shows as an Australian BIN. I tried.

  • (Method 1) "your transaction can not be completed" - I can't get past this. Tried four different cards, VPN on and off for the Google Play pay step.

  • Any vpn hack for notion app?

    • Tis free for uni students

      • What happens when your uni account ends?

        • iirc it renews monthly. Still in university so don't know sorry.

  • -1

the good thing is if spotify gone, tidal is a decent backup + can use AU card to pay argentine pesos. also have to revert back to buying app store gift cards from eneba instead of using oldubill mastercard for turkey apple store subs

  • -4

Hi, can I just use an AU Mastercard to pay without going through Google Pay?

  • +3

Just wanted to make a new post in case you missed my reply to my own post earlier above.

For those that when they press subscribe an error message pops up saying you need to use a different payment instrument. I was able to solve it by contacting google (Here is the link i used to contact google https://support.google.com/googlepay/gethelp?). Its real easy and they said they will provide an update via email btw 4 to 24 hours. Google emailed me about 5 hours later. I then just tried to subscribe and it went through straight away. Hope this helps someone!
