IMPORTANT UPDATE 26 JULY 2023: RE Method 2

OlduBil: "Transfers from foreign bank accounts to our bank accounts in Turkey are not possible".

  • OlduBil is no longer accepting deposits/transfers from foreign bank accounts. Please DO NOT make any transfers into OlduBil (i.e. your Türkiye Mastercard) until further notice!

  • If you already have the funds in OlduBil from a previous transfer, you are free to continue with Method 2. For those wanting to top up your Türkiye Mastercard, please DO NOT initiate any transfers into OlduBil from Wise or Revolut until I have a new update

  • For those who do not have funds in OlduBil and wish to utilise Method 2, I'm afraid this is no longer possible at this point in time. Every transfer done is at your own risk!

Background:

Modern problems require modern solutions. Like Xbox Game Passes, Youtube, Netflix, Discord, Google One, Microsoft 365, relocating (virtually of course) to Turkey is usually the best option, with some methods saving hundreds or thousands of dollars each year added up. The processes below are very easy, just take it slow and you'll get there! Just remember you'll be saving hundreds at the end of the day.

Due to a price increase by Spotify worldwide, my previous guide has expired. But no worries, this guide is now better than ever, and combines the two methods together (Google Pay for those who want to use Australian Cards, or Virtual Türkiye Mastercard for those who can't do the Google Pay method) as well as providing more information on extra plans and family systems. There will be some screenshots throughout the sign-up process for OlduBil(see screenshots in the instructions section) from previous testing - and yes, I can confirm the validity of these methods because I don't spend money for nothing. Most important thing - Türkiye is still very cheap!

Thank you so much for all your support and previous comments (I love reading them)! Any comments, concerns, suggestions or feedback are welcome :)

Instructions – Method #1 via Google Pay (Android Required) – If you want to use your Australian debit/credit card

Note: If you currently subscribe to Google One or any other Google services via Türkiye, then you may already have a Türkiye payment profile in your Google account. If this is the case, you may not need to do Part 1 at all (go straight to Part 2).

If you have an existing Google account and don't want to create a new Google account, simply add a new Türkiye payment profile into your Google account (not ideal for Google accounts where the sole user is an Android user or the family system consists of Android users - see why in the notes section of this post. You can create a new payment profile by following these steps: go to https://pay.google.com/gp/w/u/0/home/settings and clicking the pen icon next to "Country/Region" and a link to create a new profile should pop up. You can then add details for the Turkish profile (If needed, use a fake address generator to obtain a random Turkey address).

If you don't have an Android device, and would still like to use your Australian debit/credit card via Google Pay, consider this BlueStacks method by @langh using a PC.

Part 1 – Creating a new Google account

  1. Create a new Google account on your phone.

  2. Delete your Google Play Store cache (this may not be required). If you don't know how to, please see Google's instructions.

  3. Select your new Google account in the Google Play Store app to switch over from your personal account or add it in if it's not there (to do this, click on your top right icon, then click the dropdown next to your account email, then click "Add another account"). Make sure the selected account is your new Google account.

  4. Add a new payment method and select "Turkey" as the country (to do this, click on your top right icon again, then click "Payments and Subscriptions", then click "Payment methods"). If needed, use a fake address generator to obtain a random Turkey address for the payment profile. You can use your Australian debit or credit card (or any card as you wish) and best to use a card with no international transaction fees (Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees).

Part 2 – Subscribing to Spotify Premium

  1. Boot up the Spotify app and click "sign up" or "log in" with VPN off. If you don't have the Spotify app, download it from the Google Play Store. See link here.

Can I sign up with my Australian Spotify account? - Yes! Simply log in (make sure your current subscription, if any, is cancelled).

  2. Turn on VPN and connect to a server in Türkiye (see Notes section for suggestions) and leave it on for the remainder of the steps below.

  3. Boot up the Spotify app again. Click on the premium tab on the bottom right of the home screen. Select the plan you want. Scroll down to the bottom and make sure the country is set to Türkiye. If it's Australia or another country, click the dropdown and change it to Türkiye.

Alternatively, go to your Spotify account settings on a web browser and check what country is selected. If it's Türkiye, you're good to go. If it's Australia or another country, click the dropdown and change it to Türkiye. However, you still have to double check on the app again on step 3.

Country dropdown box greyed out? - I bet you have a current Premium subscription running? If so, this will have to finish. You can't make changes to your location while Premium is running.

  4. Click on "Google Pay". Complete the Google Pay confirmation prompt to subscribe. Your debit/credit card should already be preloaded (add one if not). If requested for an address, please use your Australian address (new Spotify accounts - family plan sign-ups).

If you get an error, trying clicking the "change plan" option and re-select your plan. Muck around with it a little… Turn VPN on or off etc.

  5. Fly back home and turn off your VPN. YOU'RE DONE! WOOO! Enjoy your savings :)

Part 3 - Family Members (Family plan only)

  1. On the main account (plan manager), go to: https://www.spotify.com/tr-tr/account/family/ to obtain an invite link. Ensure the address listed is your Australian address (DO NOT use a Türkiye address)

  2. Get a family member, friend, bf, gf, or whatever person to accept that link. When requested, enter in the same address as listed in Step 1.

Error? "You need to live at the same address? It looks like you’re trying to join Premium Family from a different country. Premium Family is only available for family members that live together. Try again when you’re at the same address."

Simple solution - go to the relevant Spotify account on a web browser and check what country is selected. If it's Türkiye, you're good to go. If it's Australia or another country, connect to a VPN server in Türkiye, then refresh the page, click the dropdown and change it to Türkiye. Accept the invite again and it should work. You can turn off VPN after this.

Instructions – Method #2 (If you want to use your Virtual Türkiye Mastercard)

Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard REQUIRED

Please read the following instructions carefully. If you already have a Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard via OlduBil, proceed with the following instructions. If you do not have a Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard, STOP HERE and see how to get one here in the instructions section (Part 1 and Part 2): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/784047. I'm in the process of making a wiki page on the Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard via OlduBil, so stay tuned!

Notes: The Spotify sign up pages may be in Turkish (which is easily navigatable if you have some common sense). Feel free to translate the page to English otherwise.

Part 1 – Subscribing to Spotify Premium

  1. Log in to Spotify (VPN off), or make a new account (VPN off).

  2. Turn on VPN and connect to a server in Türkiye (see Notes section for suggestions) and leave it on for the remainder of the steps below.

  3. Go to the Spotify Premium plans page.

  4. Scroll down and select the plan you want. Proceed to pay with your Turkey-based Virtual Mastercard. If requested for an address, please use your Australian address (new Spotify accounts - family plan sign-ups).

  5. Fly back home and turn off your VPN. YOU'RE DONE! WOOO! Enjoy your savings :)

HELP POINT: Because the popup payment windown cannot be translated to English, here are screenshots of the process in the following order: (1), (2), (3)

Part 2 – Family Members (Family plan only)

ISP Notes (Important)

  • If you currently have a Spotify Premium subscription, simply cancel the subscription and you'll be able to resubscribe via Türkiye. If the current subscription is a family plan, simply cancel the subscription and once you resubscribe via Türkiye (do not let the subscription expire), the entire family system will remain intact and no futher changes will be necessary.

  • Most VPN services will connect to Türkiye, unlike India. Those include NordVPN, Private Internet Access (PIA), free Windscribe Chrome extension (recommended), free UrbanVPN Chrome extension (recommended), ExpressVPN, etc. If one doesn't work, use another VPN.

    • If you're using Windscribe and it shows different currencies: keep turning the windscribe on and off. Each time you don't get TL, turn it off and on, then refresh the Spotify sign up page. You'll eventually land on TL. Go to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ each time you turn it off/on and see if you land on Istanbul.

FAQ

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I listen to Spotify?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you use Spotify Premium. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Spotify without a VPN.

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Spotify account, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely!

Q: Is signing up to Spotify Turkey going to affect my Spotify library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Spotify catalogue/recommendations may be weird with brand new regional music, etc… but your Spotify catalogue will adjust to what you’re listening to and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?
A: Don't worry, there really isn't any tax you need to worry about.

    • This is an issue listed in the post under step 2 of "Part 2 – Family Members (Family plan only)"

• Yeah tried this and no luck. Only way I could make it work is for whoever I am adding to the account had to turn on their VPN, go to Turkey and change their account country to Turkey.

        • Yeah so both family manager and family users need to be in Turkey for it to work. You can't have family manager in Turkey and family user in Australia/other country.

If you're having issues having the dropdown show Turkey, there may be some issues with your VPN going to Turkey. I know that with my VPN, even when selecting Turkey, it lands in Saudi Arabia, Iran etc when I check my IP address via https://whatismyipaddress.com/

          • @reivaxX: Yeah everyone who is on the family account needs to have their account country as Turkey from what I can tell

            • @jbw87: Exactly right. So does that mean you've resolved the issue you had initially? Or did I misinterpret your question/issue?

              • +1

@reivaxX: No all makes sense. Just the write up seems to indicate that you don't need to do that (maybe Misunderstood it) to add people to the family plan.

                • @jbw87: Excellent. Glad it's resolved now :)

    • I am having issues changing the country, I followed the steps and used two different VPNs. Still greyed out and cannot change to Turkey, any tips?

      • NordVPN was by far the easiest one to use so recommend trying that and giving it another go

        • NordVPN doesn't work. I've tried multiple servers including obfuscated

      • Mine was grey out too. I had to wait until my current premium subscription lapsed to be able to change it.

  • -2

If anyone has a family account with 2 spots I would love to take it, please pm me. Cheers

    • I've got 2 available in classifieds or DM me

  • @I Smell Pennies - i was going to add some money to my turkish card today but i can see the update says to not do it from revolut. Is this still the case as I can see a few people doing it successfully. Please let me know :)

    • +1

I sent money through Revolut last night (Turkey business time). Took about an hour to show up on my Oldubil card.

      • I just transferred before your comment haha. YOLO. Hopefully all good. Only sent around $50 so not a big loss if not. Oh and thanks :)

        • Will definitely take longer outside of Turkey business hours, but I've had all 3 transactions Revolut—->Oldubil go through over that last few days.

          • +1

@Fatboy74: Update! Just checked and it's already in there! I was getting worried because i can't get google pay to come up! I don't know why. If i create a new account, i can pay by google pay. When i try with my existing, it looks like it redirects to another Web page instead of getting google pay prompt

      • Using Garanti?

        • Yep i used this

          • @cheapass88: I just want to mention that I sent money with Revolut to OlduBil using Garanti today successfully. I didn’t even have to contact support, it showed up properly.

  • I guess because there are many different scenarios, specific information is limited but just checking if anyone has tried this:

I run a Spotify family with Australian pricing paid through a credit card through Spotify direct now.
Has anyone switched this to Google Play Turkish billing without needing to re-create the family?

I have a fresh Android phone with only a new TR based Google account setup, ready to go…

  • I have error: Your transaction can't be completed. To continue this transaction, use a different payment instrument or contact us.
reset the phone. google account with turkey payment profile.
australia credit card (switching between turkey and australia address), spotify turkey country, clear cache etc.
anything else i can do. thanks all.

  • still not working… even bought google gift card 400tl for redemption and it cannot be redeemed… :( anyone help please.

  • I am having issues changing the country, I followed the steps and used two different VPNs. Still greyed out and cannot change to Turkey, any tips?

    • Do you have an active plan? You cannot change the country while on plan.

  • +1

@I Smell Pennies Great guide but unfortunately it the family/duo plan doesn't work anymore it seems (at least for me?)

I got to the last step of trying to change my partners country to Turkey but the option is greyed out, even when using Turkey VPN. Bit disappointing

    • Family plan worked for me today - other people in this thread have reported trying a different VPN can have better results.

    • You need to use vpn to chat l change country and join family

      • yes didnt work, recommend another vpn?

        • I used windscribe and it worked

    • If greyed out with VPN, it means the person has an active plan. You need to wait or kick them out from Aus plan if on family plan.

  • I cannot seem to pay for a Student plan using Google Pay, and when I press the option to switch plans in the app, it just says I can pay with a credit or debit card or with carrier billing. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

    • Same problem for me.

      • me three! only options are credit or debit card or with carrier billing!

  • -1

Hey is this method still working? Saw some people saying something about Oldubil not taking international transfers anymore? I'll be using WISE by the way … thank you

    • I have transferred some money but it hasn't come through on Oldubil yet. Fingers crossed it will come through during Turkey business hours!

      • Using wise or revolut? If you used revolut would be much appreciated if you could update when it comes tbrough mate.

        • Nvm that, both transfers using revolut just arrived in oldubil accs. Wise transfer of ~$10 I did couple days back just to test if there really was an issue with wise transfers is still nowhere to be seen, will give it a week or two and see if it shows up eventually.

      • Just an update on this. Had to give Oldubil customer service a nudge who have now processed the transaction. All sorted now!

  • Couldn't get it working via google pay… Sticking with original Australian based family plan. Selling a few spots in classifieds if anyone else doesn't want the hassle

  • Like many others here, I had errors when trying to pay via Google play.

I have finally gotten it to work, and have now signed up for Duo account.

    What I did was:
    - follow the steps are per OP
    - contact your bank, to check if there is a lock on your card
    - contact google play support re: your issue. You don't need to inform them of your intentions.

  • Has anyone tried transferring for a friends turkish card? My friend has stuffed it up twice lol. I tried to login to their revolut, but couldn't because devices too far!

  • Just let anybody who wants to know that I just followed the Revolut & Garanti route to top up my Oldubil account and it worked through within one hour. Fingers crossed that the balance will be properly deducted into our spotify service in Turkey in the coming months.

    Good luck, everybody!

    • Just finished doing the exact same thing - had to do a couple of transfers as I lost around 30TL in fees and I stupidly sent the exact amount in the first transfer.

Happily listening to Spotify again now :)

    • Just did the same thing, all done within an hour or two and sitting in Oldubil.

  • +1

Any solution to this: ''Couldn't complete your purchase. Check that you have the correct country selected in your Play account''?

    • Did you manage to solve this? Having the same issue

      • No… I just give up

  • So I had success, however Google has flagged my Australia payments profile, should I be worried?

It's asking for picture of card and ID, should I just ignore?

    • it was a burner so I deleted that payment profile, hopefully it doesn't flag the turkey profile down the track

  • Anyone know how I can get Google Pay to work with a different plan? I've been able to get it to show "Pay with Spotify" and "Pay with Google Play" but that's only for the individual plan. I am a student so I tried to use the student plan, but when I select the student plan it opens an in-app browser where the only payment options are through Spotify or carrier billing.

  • Just cancelled a family plan, which expires on the 29th. On the browser (via Surfshark TR after login), the TL pricing shows up, however (obviously) no Google pay option.

Despite following the cache clearing steps here, no luck getting the app working. Other steps:
    * Clear cache, clear storage from Spotify App
    * Uninstall Spotify App
    * Clear device cache, restart device, restart VPN (Surfshark)
    * Ensure Turkiye Google Account is the default one in Play Store, download Spotify app, login etc -> still shows plan options in AUD, and payment options "see on browser"

Will keep trying and report back.

    • I signed up via the app and the google play option was there.

    • +1

      Found this in the instructions:

Country dropdown box greyed out? - I bet you have a current Premium subscription running? If so, this will have to finish. You can't make changes to your location while Premium is running.

      • You are correct. I had that issue too. You need to wait until your current plan expires.

  • +1

I moved my existing Spotify family (AU direct billed from Spotify) to Turkey billed via Google Play just now.

Just a couple of notes that differ from the posted instructions:

    • Windscribe VPN gave me "Google Play purchases are not supported in your country. Unfortunately you will not be able to complete purchases."
    • Switched to Urban VPN and that worked.
    • I lost my family structure and need to invite everyone again.
    • Invite can't be accepted until each account changes it's country to Turkey - which requires VPN.

Other than that my family is now good to go. Thanks OP and I hope these notes can help others.

    • each account can only change the country to turkey only once the existing sub expires?? is this correct?

      • Correct, need to wait for it to expire.

  • Hi, I Smell Pennies,

I've gone through and created a Turkey Google account and have used it to purchase a Google One 100GB so I know it works. I've followed all the steps and got to the last step where i authorize payment through google pay but then an Error message comes up:

Your transaction cant be completed. To continue this transaction, secure your account.

I clicked on the link and read what it says but seem to find anything that will allow me to continue with purchase.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

    • +1

Go to that page, turn VPN off then complete purchase on Aussie wifi.

      • This worked for me. Cheers Max!

  • Can anyone confirm whether topping up Oldubil with Wise works? A few posts (after OP update) indicates that it's still working.

    • No it does not, you'll have to follow up with oldubil and provide proof if transfer etx before they'll credit your account. Using revolut and transfering using garanti bankasi as in instructions was working as of Wednesday

      • Thank you, I’ll give Revolut a go.

    • I used Wise to top up an Oldubil account over the weekend and it all worked fine. Transferred on Sunday evening and funds were in the account by Monday night, about 24h delay all up.

  • Transfer from revolut into oldubil via garanti this morning went thru this arvo ok 👍

    • +1, Took 4 days, but it came into my account automatically. Didn't even contact revolut or oldubil. So it does take time if you don't see it same day.

FOR ANYONE GETTING PURCHASED FAILED OR SIMILAR ERRORS USING GOOGLE PLAY

It is likely that your VPN's IP is getting flagged as being a VPN ip by spotify, try using UrbanVPN, or if you have NordVPN or a similar service, use p2p or obfuscated servers and then connect to turkey.

  • Does the Revolut card not directly work as a payment to Turkey Spotify, has anyone tried?

  • Anyone having issues adding a payment method? I've created a new Google account on my phone, click on add payments, enter a credit card number. As soon as I select Turkey as the country, it just takes me straight back to the option to enter a credit card number again. Have tried an ING and Macquarie card, and also via Getflix VPN from my PC, but it does the same thing. Any ideas?

    • i had this same issue, and thought i was going nuts, just scroll down and you should be able to enter your address, no need to add the card number again…

  • So is the Play store method the best bet at the moment? Any ideas if I could use an Android emulator? Im an Apple guy and dont want to buy an Adroid if I can avoid it.

    • Use Google Studio on Mac or borrow a Windows and use Bluestack. Bluestack is much easier.

  • Anyone tried a Wise multi-currency card directly with VPN, e.g https://wise.com/au/travel-money/argentine-peso-card (https://www.creditcardvalidator.org/country/ar-argentina) or https://wise.com/au/travel-money/turkish-lira-card (https://www.creditcardvalidator.org/country/tr-turkey) ? I don't have one, but curious if the numbers are in the IIN ranges for those countries

  • Okay so this took me a few days to sort out, if I'd read the above comments more closely I'd have had an easier time!

    • Initially I was running into the "subscription not available in your country" issue, even after setting up a new Turkish Google account and payment method, etc
    • As per xdpx's comment (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14076581/redir) the issue was that the new Google account was part of a family plan based in Australia
    • Left family, could progress to new Google Pay screen with price in TL
    • Hit a new, vague error message advising me to secure my account
    • Tried again, but this time turned off Urban VPN before pressing the blue "subscribe" button
    • Success!
  • Just tried OlduBil today and bank transferred from my TRY account in wise and worked perfectly. Maybe as I have opened a TRY account on wise it recognises it as a local transfer?

    • Into which bank in TRK did you use?

      • +1

Odeabank, was in OlduBil within 5hrs

        • What IBAN number did you use?

        • I tried this bank and did not get the funds after 4 days I ended up having to email them with the wise transfer receipt and then got the funds in OlduBil.

I’m not sure I’ll try it again, it’s not really a sustainable approach but I put enough for 5 months. Hopefully a better solution has arrived by then!

  • Is this able to be done via India using Google Pay method? I have one already set up but for some reason Google Pay method gives me the error not available

    • India's new legislation does not allow foreign credit cards to be used for recurring payment, that's why.

  • Just bought an individual plan with 12 month subscription, pretty cheap at $22. Do I really not have to have the VPN on to listen to Spotify now? Would Spotify not get suspicious that a plan purchased in Türkiye is only accessed in Australia?

    • You don't need VPN to listen to it. The premium plan has no geo-restriction so they would not.

    • Do Turkish people not move or study in Australia? We live in a borderless world.

  • Thanks for the guide. I used option 2 and was done in under 5 min. Super easy!

  • I get all the way to Google pay and hit subscribe and it thinks for a bit then comes back with an error that says "Error - your transaction can't be completed. To continue this transaction, use a different payment instrument or contact us"

any idea what's causing this? is it a Google pay or Spotify issue?

    • OK, I contacted Google and they had restricted the account, have requested them to unrestrict, let's see….

      • @katejessica how did you go with this? i have the same issue although i was able to join google one 100gb through google pay

        • +1

@AKka apparently fixed, but they asked me to wait 48 hours before trying the payment….im counting down the next 5 hours till I can try, haha

next on my list is Google one, sub comes up in Sep, so will try that one next…

          • @katejessica: @katejessica oh great good luck, keep us posted pls, did you set up a new account? mine is new, perhaps i have to wait few more days and hoping will unlocked itself? :(

            • @AKka: It worked!
This was a new Turkey Google account. Dont wait, thats what I did, just contact google. Check in your google play, you should see the rejected transaction number there, give the google help chat that number and they will look into it for you.
