Is this better that Koala brand?

    • +1

When I get a chance, will the the 1kg pack to try out. The texture might be different but nice to know Koala is Australian.

  • I got a 20kg Royal Umbrella jasmine rice for $30 at Hurstville, but can't remember the store's name.

    • Have not seen Hurstville shop selling $30 for 20kg. If you can recall the location of the shop, I can go check it out now.

      • The one just opposite to HSBC.

          $32

        • @jpl: I remember the store name now. It's Ka Lot Fuk supermarket. Well, I bought it for $30 about a month ago, may be the price is ajusted, or a cashier's mistake.

        • +1

@O O: yes 家乐福 。 $32 still a very good buy but they advertise $35, only when I asked the price is $32.

        • +1

          @jpl: Here is the receipt.

        • @jpl: Asian supermarket, I'd just offer 30 and see if they play. They are usually good for a respectful haggle :)

        • @Slippery Fish: You usually haggle with the cashiers at Asian supermarkets and they usually lower the price for you.

        • @Diji1: I generally just go to the fella at the local market who also has a shop in town actually but in essence yes. I still don't feel as scummy as people who haggle at op shops :)

        • +1

@O O: Great buy!! I went there just now, $32 won't budge at all. You must be so charismatic that the young ladies there gave you $2 off automatically.

  • OP, I followed the link on Sky Orange given above, and found Nong Shim Ramyun $2.99/5pack. I think it deserve a post.

  • Good if its 25kg.

    • May I know where you came across a 25kg packing for this rice please?

  • I am Vietnamese.
About two years ago my wife bought one bag of this ROYAL UMBRELLA Jasmine Rice to try it out, as the aďs on SBS Vietnamese program sounded so nice.
Well, it was a once in a life time experience. We never want a second bag.

    • Is it that bad you never want a second bag? Not as good as Vietnamese's broken rice?

      • Might be that Australians like their rice to be dry and grain by grain. We want it to be a little bit sticky.

        • I found out that stickiness depends on the cooker and also the amount of water. Different rice will also have different water ratio requirement. When you first use a new pack of rice, even the same brand, they are probably harvested on different seasons therefore contributed to the different texture.

For this rice, I can cook dry and sticky depending on what what I want to do with it.

        • Sticky or gluggy?

  • A "proper" Vietnamese meal usually consists of rice, a stir-fried dish, a salty meat-based dish and a vegetable soup.

Vietnamese people love to cook rice with the Tiger brand rice cooker, and good jasmine rice would be cooked perfectly every single time. A bit dry or a bit gluggy, depend on how individuals or families like it. But when the rice is cooked, we don't have it coming out grain by grain (unless we prepare it for fried rice).

I reckon good rice to us is a bit sticky, ad when you put it in a small bowl, you can tip it up-side-down into a plate and the rice can stay in that shape, make it very presentable.
