Just want to point out that this one is No GPS

If you want the version with GPS, use this link:

Why do you need GPS for a Car Dashcam?

      • You don't, and most likely it won't stand up in court.

The video footage is enough to work out speed anyway.

      • +3

For automatic time syncing, GPS logs (map where you have gone) and for fun/interest, speed.

    • +2

Just asking, what's the benefit of having GPS on dashcams?

      • +2

Time synchronization is nice to have.

With these you can have it embed the GPS data in the video file (but not display it on-screen) so if it's in your interest to prove you weren't speeding - you could extract it and use it.

I guess if you loan the card to someone you can see where they went and how fast they were going.

All 'nice to have' but not exactly essential features.

        • But it may work against you as well, "You were travelling at 105 on 100 km/h road so you're also at fault".

        • @tukanglistrik:

Pretty sure you could just edit it out with software or using video editor.

        • +1

          @MrEMC:

The way I have it set up - the GPS data is only in the metadata of the video file - you need to use "NovaTrakt" to extract it. It would be trivial to re-encode and scrub that data (and it's unlikely anyone else would work out how to extract it anyway).

Agreed that having speed hard-coded in to your videos isn't ideal.

EDIT: Here is "RegistratorViewer" on a file from my A119 after the GPS data has been extracted using "NovaTrakt" - note the speed info was baked in to the video on this file - but you can turn that off and still save the metadata.

        • @senorclean:

Do you have CLP lens? If so does it helps with glare especially during the day. I was thinking of getting non s version for higher resolution.

        • @MrEMC:
I haven't bothered with a CPL (I haven't had the dashcam long). I do see some reflections of the dash at times but they're not deal-breakingly bad. It is a bit worse in my wife's car (it has a less-vertical windscreen).

The CPL would hurt night performance a bit - for me I think I can deal with the reflections.

      • On the video there will be text about:
        1. Speed of your car, which is important during accident.
        2. Location of the accident in exact point.

      • its really just another layer of "i was in the right" if you have an accident and its the other persons fault. shows you were doing everything within the law etc. i dont think they will work against speeding fines though

  • Are these really good enough to clearly capture car plates in day and night?

    • +6

This dashcan has good day and night video quality, however just like all dashcams it depends on conditions and position in relation to light angle, no dashcam is perfect.

      • +1

Id recommend getting the CPL adapter for this to prevent unwanted glare, especially if you have a shallow windscreen.

        • Check first as the windscreen on some cars do cause more reflected glare than others. CPL does darken the image slightly.

        • @edfoo:
For my car, half the image was a reflection of my dashboard. I bought it after seeing the footage.

        • @ATangk: For your case, yes CPL is useful.

    • +1

      Within reason - Yes.
These dashcams seem to provide the highest clarity for the price of any dash cam I have come across.
      Night is obviously harder.
Checked some night footage and in a 60 zone the overtaking traffic number plates were still legible.
On the freeway, same night, no street lights and couldn't really make anything out (I assume from compression? A lot more full frame motion even though the passing speeds weren't much higher)
On a clear day in a 70 zone I was able to make out some of the number plates of on-coming traffic.

      • Going to second everything you said esp about night footage.

Oncoming and passing car plates at night seem to reflect too much light for the camera to expose properly.

But stationary traffic at the lights will be clearly visible.

I have both cams set to 1080p30 with default settings, which seem to give me the best night and day picture quality.

  • +1

    Looks good to me.
Im looking for a small non obtrusive one just for the if situation of an accident

Prefer to have no cables going everywhere or as little as possible.

Where do all the cables go?

Is this a good budget reliable one?

    • +2

You can, in most cars, easily pull back the roof a little and run it along there, down the window seals and then under the glove box.

    • +1

Got 2 of these front and back in my car.

Friend who sit in my car usually don't realise they're there unless i tell them.

I run my cable between panel gaps around the roof and A pillar, through the dash and under mats if i can. The supplied cables are very long so you should do a neat job at it.

      • thanks everyne,

        have just ordered one,
the cabling sounds like a good setup, the only thing I dont like is the cigaerette lighter port being used,

but I guess Ill get used to it :)

        • +1

Can always get a double USB slot one (make sure they have the correct amp/voltage) and do that instead, if you need it for charging.

if you need it for smoking.. disgusted look

        • @brezzo:
For me i dont use the car charger. Just didnt want cables everywhere as it looks tacky . Just wanted to be hidden

          But thank you

        • +1

You can connect it direct to your fuse box with a cheap fuse double adapter and a hard wire kit. Check out the size of your fuses before you buy one as some cars now have mini fuses.
More secure than a cig socket connection. I connect to a fuse socket that is only live when the motor is running and not on acc.

        • I have a splitter attachment in to the lighter port (wonder if the younger generation would know that's the original use for it) that allows for another lighter port and 2 usb ports.

I'm guessing the back & front cam users then have a dual lighter port attachment.

  • has anyone had problems with the a119s gps module? ours seems to draw power while the ignition is off, which then causes the a119s rtc to reset after a day or two. all the setting on the a119s is returned to default.

    • Mine did that, i returned the whole thing and got a replacement.

      • Did you get it from banggood? What's their returns policy like if this issue happens to occur?

        • I got mine on ebay, good service

  • these are the prefect dashcams for the price range, even i have paid little bit more on ebay that express delivered, super happy with the result, good stuff. regarding the gps module, you can also view the tracking where the vehicle been driven to at what time & speed, which i guess bit helpful for people who are interested.

  • How does the video quality on these compare to Blackvue dashcams which are a couple of times this price?

    • The video of blackvue is better but you should also consider which one is more discreet.

    • i have one and the quality is very good. cant speak for blackvues though

  • These seem to be the older Version 1 model.

    • How did you ID the V1 model?

      • The V2 is always mentioned every other time I've seen them for sale. No mention of it here.

        • +1

          Q&A at bottom says

          Question:
          What version is this?
          Answer:
This is the VIOFO A119S upgraded v2 car dvr, lens 6G F1.8, 135° FOV

        • FWIW BG staff and buyers state it is the V2 in the "Question & Comments" section.

The whole listing is a bit of a mess with the conflicting details such as 6G/7G and F1.6/F1.8. It would be nice if it was clear.

        • @bargainpersona:
There are 2 V2 versions. The first came out with F1.6 lens and then later changed to F1.8. They probably didn't update their info properly.

        • @sian72: V2 is 7G F1.6 or 7G F1.8. V1 is 6G F1.8. It is not clear on the web. Better check with supplier before ordering.

      • the GPS connector pins are cylindrical instead of V shaped pins, but this is the non gps version so im not sure (unless you can check the serial number, which you can tell)

    • The fifth image shows a v2.

  • Thanks. Ordered…. :-)

  • Thanks, got the GPS version

  • I have one of these and it's a great little unit.

It was recommended not to use sandisk card but a samsung card and format it via the viofo website

    http://support.viofo.com/support/solutions/articles/19000046…

    • this is a dumb question… but how do you use that formatting program? do you need a micro SD/SD card reader?

      • +1

        Yes.

        Purchase options:

        • ~$0.20 from Asian online sellers (e.g., AliExpress) including postage but expect 2-4+ weeks delivery.
        • ~$1 from eBay - local delivery, including postage
        • $8-$20+ from Australian mainstream retailers, buy in store
  • A number of reviews have suggested that the video quality is actually BETTER on the A119 version of this (without the Sony sensor of the A119S).

  • It is not clear whether it is V2 version or V1 version. There is a difference, anyone wants to buy better confirm with the supplier before making order.

  • Better Version and More Choices from Aliexpress, you also can Order From VIOFO Official Store, 100% positive feedback.

  • This look like a copy of streetguardian camera.

    • They are. Personally I think SG and Viofo may be related somehow as SG selling premium camera and Viofo selling budget (with reasonable quality) camera.

  • Has it gone up to $118 now? I am logged in and it shows $118.

    • It's back now even cheaper USD68.99, after kept refreshing their website for price update. ;)

  • +1

Then, buy the GPS model, cheeper than the one w/o GPS, 33% discount still there 😄
    https://www.banggood.com/VIOFO-A119S-2-Inch-Car-Dashcam-6G-F…

    • Not anymore

  • expired? Shows as AUS$140 for me…

  • I just got mine today.

    Still trying to learn everything.
I didnt knoe you needed a sd card. Will go buy one.

How many gb do i need and how many gb does the device record?

    • A 32gb microsd will record 4hr and 8hr for 64gb. Go with the 64gb card.

  • Anyone here having a problem with the a119s v2 getting stuck after the logo splash? Three times in three days.

  • -2

Damn, I was charged $2.62 as foreign fee even though conversion was done through paypal.

A heads up would be nice in the post.

  • What is the point of having the GPS when there is no viewer that I can find to view it?

    • It takes an extra step but it can be done:

Use NovaTrakt to extract to generate GPS data files from your video files (it'll put them in a subfolder)
Then use RegistratorViewer to play back the video - it'll find the GPS data and report it on-screen.

  • I received mine today but it's the F1.6 lens instead of the advertised F1.8. Is there a major difference?
