Thoughts on the Mi Notebook Pro

http://www.techradar.com/news/xiaomi-launches-macbook-pro-ki…

Looks like some pretty impressive specs at a relative low price point (the top of the line model goes for $1350 - the comparable Macbook Pro is $3499). I know I'm considering this as a replacement to my ageing 2013 Macbook Air. Thoughts?

That thing looks like Dell XPS 15. Much cheaper, but lower spec as well.

  • It has a 60watt hour battery and 8th gen intel processor so it would be much more efficient compared to the air i think.
On the chinese website it says it has 9 hours of video playback so lets hope that their claim is true :'( (unlike the air's supposed 9.5 hour battery life)

I also need to replace my 2012 Macbook Air soon so really looking forward to it being listed on OzBargain! (though that might take a while)

All Apple fans say that now that Apple has adopted x86 :)

Adopting x86 was the only viable option considering the PowerPC megahertz march of death and I am glad Apple had OS X running on x86 in the labs, just waiting for something like the Core Duo. I myself waited for the far superior Core 2 Duo. I dual boot Windows 10 with macOS and i have really tried to like it, considering during leaner times I ran everything from Windows 3.0 through Windows 10, except for Windows 8. I had to dive into it just on the weekend to fix a wi-fi issue with a Fuji Xerox printer and I was not really happy by the end. Problem solved, but dislike renewed. I can't put my finger on it, but I just like macOS better.

    I'm quite impressed.
Its a company that has little experience in building laptops, actually building laptops with higher quality than the standard competition whom have been in the market for two decades, and doing so at a lower price (AU $1,066). It's market disruptive. Here's my thoughts:

    The okay (meh stuff):
Screen is okay, not the best, not the worst.
    The great (what I like):
Decent Cooling, Keyboard, Touchpad, Fingerprint reader and Build Quality.

    The good (smart choices):
The Specs of the CPU, GPU, RAM, SSD, Battery size.

    The bad (bad choices):
    Very low quality webcam

    The ugly (short-sighted):
    Lack of ThunderBolt 3 port

It only ever mentions USB 3.0 on their website, but I'm willing to bet the 2x USB-C ports are actually USB 3.1 compliant.
However, the lack of TB3 means no eGPU support. Which is confusing because Intel did say they were going to include the TB3 protocol into the chipset, and allow other companies to use the protocol freely. So it seems Xiaomi opted out due to unexplained reason.

And why that's such a short-sight is because this device is finally powerful enough, and so modern GPU's wouldn't really be bottlenecked by the CPU, RAM, and SSD.
So it would've been cool to grab one of these as a Long-Life laptop, and combine it with the AKiTiO Node.
Then you'd have a powerful mobile device with lite graphics power (a la Nintendo Switch), then plug it at home as a TV Console, except a lot more powerful and full-featured.

Shame they're missing the biggest and best features: MacOS

    Presale on GeekBuying.

    • i5-8250U 8GB/256GB USD $1089.99
    • i7-8550U 8GB/256GB USD $1239.99
    • i7-8250U 16GB/256GB USD $1399.99

You can get a Dell XPS 15 with i7-7700HQ & GTX 1050 for $1839.20 GST-included & local warranty. I don't think Mi Notebook Pro is going to cut it, but we'll wait & see the reviews.
