You mean microtransactions in general? some of the $$ goes to the Rocket League Prize pools, so it's not as if the money is completely being gobbled up by the devs / publishers.
These purchases do not affect gameplay either and are just cosmetics
Yeah, generally just the whole "here's a cool crate/box oh wait sorry you need to buy a key to unlock it" kind of deal. It's (IMO) a really shit way of doing microtransactions.
Edit: I should add, I don't really like it because I think it turns it into gambling more than anything. I get that it's probably more profitable than just selling things, but it just doesn't sit right with me.
It feels to me like a loophole for something that should be illegal, like rather than directly buying a random item for $5 you buy a token for a random item for $5. Seems kinda predatory. Of course, it's optional and the market has given game devs the OK but it really doesn't sit right with me personally.
A better way to do that would be:
Vehicles themed with logo from the esport teams/players on special vehicles that you buy DIRECTLY. No RNG bullshit. The RNG is what makes it feel scammy and cash grabby. If they did it this way they would have my money. However, with RNG I wont spend a cent, even to "support" them.
It's all cosmetic so what's the harm?

It's not pay to win, everything in the crates is purely cosmetic
There's also an update coming in two weeks with a new arena, new designs and over 90 free new customising items.

Keys are $1 USD each when buying 5+ through the game. This isn't cheaper at all. $10 USD for 10 keys in game is $12.45 AUD.
